2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

It's one thing to make suggestions on ways the system could be improved. But just saying, "it's a travesty that BC goes West while UNH gets a (sort of) home game!" isn't constructive, and just comes off as whining.

It IS a travesty that BC has to go west in this particular situation, but that's the system. I don't think that's whining. That being said, every team will be flying to St. Louis and no one team will have an overbearing home crowd advantage. The real disadvantage for BC is that they won't be playing in front of many of their fans. That's about it though. If they don't win, it won't because they had to travel.

Someone else brought up consolation games--enough is enough. It really is time for the CCHA and ECAC to ditch it.

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

True, but that statement is only accurate if a school hosts every year, which isn't going to happen. UNH has hosted three times in the last five years, but that didn't prevent them drawing the short straw in 2008 (nor the whining that came with it.)

Or, more facetiously, the CCHA could have gotten rid of that anachronism called the consolation game, and prevented this year's mess.

I dont think the Consolation game had anything to do with this? Miami won the CCHA championship and that was enough to switch them and Michigan for the #1 seed. The real problem comes with UNH doing their usual post season choke job, only in the Hockey East Tourney this time, losing to Merrimack and dropping to a #4 seed. You know, UNH could have just beat that Roman Catholic school, and kept BC in Manchester and sending Miami and Michigan to St Louis.

Without the consolation games:

Code:
1	Yale (EC)	29
2	No Dak (WC)	28
3	Boston Coll (HE)27
4	Miami (CC)	26
5	Michigan (CC)	24
6	Merrimack (HE)	24
7	Denver U (WC)	23
8	Union (EC)	22
9	MinnDuluth (WC)	21
10	NotreDame (CC)	19
11	Western (CC)	19
[B]12	New Hamp (HE)	16
13	NE-Omaha (WC)	16[/B]
14	CO College (WC)	16
15	RPI (EC)	16

As I recall, UNH had a chance to not be sent west that year, but blew it when they coughed up a 3-goal lead to BC in the HE semis, and subsequently lost. I think the hosting rule played a part, but had they won that game (and perhaps the following one), they would have stayed east. Any UNH fans complaining about that selection should have been told to put the onus on their team, not the selection rules.

I think $77 is outrageous.
I'm not 100%, but I was pretty sure that Holy Cross (of all teams) had a stranglehold on the bids in Worcester at the moment. I'm pretty sure BU was the host in 2006, but I'm not sure that they have been since then. (Google shows Holy Cross has hosted in '08, '10, and will host in '12. BU hosted in '06. I can't find the answer for 2003. Doesn't seem like much of a stranglehold.)

I have to imagine the 77$ tickets with gas being 3.50+/gallon will deter some people from coming. Not sure how many, but I'm sure it will have some impact.

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

It is, but isn't that lower than in the past for manch?

Personally, I don't think it is. BC games used to be $20 per for season ticket holders--regular season hockey. $77 for three NCAA tournament games comes out to basically $25 per game. I don't think that's bad at all. But, I'm speaking as an individual. It's obviously tough if you wanted to bring a family.

The per-game cost isn't bad, but also not relevant, since you can't by tickets per game. You have to buy all three.

I was just asking isn't this year's cost ($77) lower than in past regionals at Manchester. I don't think its bad at all for 3 quality (hopefully) Ncaa games, not much more than 3 games at UNH... (maybe less if you include the cost hike for the Maine, BC, BU games?)

Re: 2011 NCAA Selection Show Thread

I posted this in the NE Regional thread, but I'll post it again...

I really cannot believe people are complaining about the price. I mean you get to see three very meaningful college hockey games that will decide the eventual national champion of our sport for under $100 per person and get good seats that would cost about $100 a ticket for a regular season meaningless Bruins game.

Not everyone can/wants to go both days. I think that's what people are complaining about.

Assuming both your children are under 12 years of age it would cost a family of four $268 before you even get in the place. Then factor in parking, gas and food for two days.

Sure, no guarantees, though. If the games are sold out, or close to it, tickets might be more expensive.
I doubt the price would go up enough to make attending two games costlier than buying the $77 set.

When was the last time a regional actually sold out? Did the one with UNH and BU from a couple years ago accomplish that?

True, I'm just tossing out scenarios where that wouldn't work. (Also, if you have a larger group, you might not all get tickets together, but I suppose if there's space on the upper level, you could all migrate up there.)

Never? I'm not sure any of the regionals I've been to (most years since 2002) have been sold out. 2002 in Worcestor might have; UNH, Maine, BU, and Cornell all in that regional (along with Quinnipiac and Harvard; last year of the 12-team field), and I seem to remember the upper section being pretty packed.

North Dakota sold out its regional in 2006.
