2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Do the Gophers adjust to the NHL rink well? They obviously were able to get wins all season on the NHL sheet to be able to win the WCHA title, but did they play well and look sharp? That is a nice advantage for UMD, DU, UMD, & MTU who all have NHL size rinks.

 Did you think the Gophers only have access to Mariucci ice? They spend their whole week on Ridder (NHL size) when they're schedule to play on an NHL rink that weekend. No different for any of the teams with Olympic sheets, I think they all have practice ice of NHL size available.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

the only small rink the gophers noticeably struggled on was against michigan state. i personally am not really concerned about the rink size.

Well, if St. Cloud spent all week practicing on an NHL rink, I could only assume the gophers would do the same with one on campus.....

That being said, game time execution on a different size sheet is different from practice. Especially on special teams. Some teams are built for it, and I have seen olympic sheet teams adjust very well. I was curious about this Gophers team specifically. Not insinuating that they would struggle.

I would say that this St. Cloud team is not as strong on NHL size vs. Olympic. That's my opinion.

SCSU only played 6 games this season on NHL size ice to I would suspect it is going to be a disadvantage on some level tonight. They went 2-3-1 in games on NHL size rinks.

Yeah, I don't get the negativity. I would hope they are past it. Plus they will be playing in front of (what should be) an electric crowd regardless of who wins tonight. It will be a lot of fun. I bet they come to play. Not positive they will win but I bet they come to play.

All positivity here :D

That makes sense. It will be nice when the NHC renovation is complete. They are converting the practice rink to NHL size. Right now the team has to go across town to practice at the MAC in St. Cloud.

Hope to read a bunch condescending remarks towards SCSU after tonight's game. If we are not in it, I'd like to see the Gophers prevail. I have a feeling UMD will not make it to the final.

Agreed. Should be nice. Genuinely happy for you guys.

There is talk within some alumni that Lucia has to go.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

UND beats the Gophers more often than not under Lucia. Woog was the one who always beat the Sioux. I bet now they end up at the same regional with UND 1 and Minnesota maybe a 3 if they're lucky.

At least the women won.

The thing that was hard to swallow was that the Whioux took a timeout late in the second period to try and make a change in momentum. Evidently this wasn't an option for the Gopher brain trust.

This was a very embarrassing loss for a team that has performed pretty well for the course of a season.

Seems a bit knee-jerk.

Don't even want to wait to see how the Regional goes?

This was the first real "big game" for almost every single one of the MN kids (at the college level, in that kind of atmosphere). That counts for something.

But yeah, definitely tough to swallow.

Well this should be a wake up call for the Gophers they have some holes to fill. ;)

The D was like hot buttered slippery oily watermelons. Anything could slide into the front of the net. God that sucked.
This isn't a 'we'll get 'em next time'. This is a big failure.

Wow...another infamous and historical moment for the Golden boys. That was undoubtedly the most epic meltdown by a Gopher team in the Final Five since the inception of the Broadmoor Trophy in 1982. As a result, UND will most likely be $lotted into the X for the regionals. With the exception of Bemidji (9th) and UAA (12th), this team has not shown an ability to put good teams away in this half with exceptional scoring.

In the last 15 years only two teams have won the Mac and an NC. The Gophers have never won an NC and the Mac in the same season. Will this team break the Mac curse? I have my doubts.

I agree with FiveHole. I just want to know why Don (at some point) didn't call a timeout. Wally Shaver said it best, they just looked lazy most of that third period. Lot of guys watching pucks and not moving their feet. Hats off to UND for never stopping working. They played with lots of heart. In the third period, we didn't.

Listened on the radio and just saw the highlights. Yikes that was painful. They just stopped and let their heads hang down. Their young. They will learn from the experience but it has got to sting right now.

IMHO - This move would be FAR from knee jerk - there were some fundamentally flawed non coaching moves tonight. First off the 2nd UND goal should of been reviewed (Non-Goal) - Should of called the time out either there to give the guy who pulls **** out of his *** as he goes time to change his min about reviewing the goal - Most certainly should of called the time out when UND tied the game - clearly needed to reorganize the **** show on ice.... This has been 4 years coming.... Mike G needs to take this team over.

I agree, when a team is shelled like the Gophers were in the 3rd, it's not quantum mechanics, the team has completely come unglued and a timeout is warranted. That's alert coaching. It seems characteristic of a team that has tapered off in exceptional scoring from the first half of the season (1st half/+5 Gs/game = 9, 2nd half/+5 Gs/game = 2).
