2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

It's always hard to say goodbye. I will miss Mariucci Arena, but at least the Gophers sent us off with a bang this year!

Grats to future Gopher Justin Kloos on winning Mr. Hockey.

Playing hockey at a higher level took a back seat to leaving a legacy for Lakeville South's Justin Kloos this past hockey season.

The high-scoring forward decided to stay home for his senior year, and that loyalty was rewarded with a banner season for the Cougars and the ultimate individual award for Kloos on Sunday.

Kloos, a University of Minnesota recruit, was selected Minnesota's Mr. Hockey Award winner, presented by the Minnesota Minute Men, at a ceremony at the RiverCentre.

The 5-foot-9, 167-pound speedster had 41 goals and 62 assists to lead the Cougars to a third-place finish in the Class 2A state tournament last week.

"I never could have imagined I could win an award like this," Kloos said. "All (of the other finalists) deserved to win this just as much as I did. This season was incredible. I didn't expect it. I was given a great opportunity in my senior season."

Kloos, who finished his prep career with 238 points, played 13 games for Waterloo of the United States Hockey League following the completion of his junior season. The tug to play his senior year in the USHL was strong, but it couldn't overcome the force field that pulled him back to high school to be with his teammates and friends.

"It's really a testament to his character and the special type of player he is that he came back to his roots and finished his prep career," Cougars coach Kurt Weber said. "He's the kind of kid that wants to give back to the community. He wanted to
continue making a tradition at Lakeville South and to leave a legacy. He was living that dream that a high school kid always has."

Kloos ended his career with the winning goal in Lakeville South's 2-1 victory over Moorhead in the big-school third-place game. In the quarterfinals, he had a goal and an assist in the unseeded Cougars' 3-2 upset victory over top-ranked and top-seeded Duluth East.

"Coming back to play with my best friends Joe Freemark and Alex Harvey made this the most memorable season ever," Kloos said. "That's why I stuck around."

Said Weber: "This award is just the icing on the cake for a great kid who had a phenomenal year."

The other Mr. Hockey finalists were Duluth East's Jake Randolph and Dom Toninato, Eagan's Will Merchant and Michael Zajac, Breck's Grant Opperman, Duluth Marshall's Judd Peterson, Hill-Murray's Charlie Sampair, Hermantown's Jared Thomas and St. Thomas Academy's Eric Schurhamer.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Tech winning pretty much killed our chances at a 1 seed. Yeah. Whee simple math (c).
Even if CC had won that series, they still would have had to beat UND for the right to face MN and give the Gophers an opportunity to flip the Cornell comparison via the COP portion (CC and Niagara are the common opponents w/ Cornell). So it'd still have been iffy in that regard. Secondly, MN still has a chance at a #1 seed, but they must win the F5 (which has been assumed all along) and will require a *little* help elsewhere (i.e. BU not winning HE). Lastly, I don't really know how much is gained by getting a #1 seed; MN will play in St. Paul regardless, and their first round opponent won't be all that different being a weak #1 vs a strong #2. The only real consequence (other than last change in the 2nd game) that I can think of is that being a #2 opens the door for Duluth to be placed at the X with them, which could very well provide a rematch of the week before should the two meet in the F5 championship game.

I would rather avoid playing UMD. Especially if they get last change, and especially if the Gophers end up playing them at the Final Five.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Actually, there are quite a few scenarios I've found that give the Gophers a #1 (assuming they win the F5, if they don't I don't think it's possible for them to get a #1 at all). I was starting to list them but ran into so many "but not if" statements that it wasn't worthwhile.

Harvard beating Cornell, Michigan losing to Bowling Green and BU losing to Providence or Maine would all be really useful. Outside of those, there's several more possibilities that lead to MN getting a #1,

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Per Sioux Sports, if MN wins the Final Five, they have about a 3 in 4 chance of getting a #1 seed. If they don't get the #1 seed, they will almost certainly be 5th-6th overall (strong #2 seed). There's a tiny chance (about 1 in 100) that they'd be 7th-8th.

If MN loses Friday night, there's a 93% chance they'll be 7th-10th overall (weak #2 / strong #3).

With all that said, if we take the probability of MN winning their games into account, I would estimate the following:
#1 seed: 20%
#2 seed: 60%
#3 seed: 20% (55% of scenarios put them here with a loss Friday)

This looks about what I saw too. The other big one would be if Denver beats UMD, then the Gophers beat Denver for the championship. With that alone, UMD drops to about 8th overall, and MN gets a #1 seed.

Take this for what it's worth considering the <a href="http://www.twincities.com/vikings/ci_20121512/shooter-now-peyton-manning-will-rise-again-ben">source</a>, but .....

<i>Even though the Florida Panthers want to sign the Gophers' Nick Bjugstad, a former first-round draft pick, it appears the former Mr. Hockey from Blaine will remain for his junior season at Minnesota. Bjugstad, 19, accelerated graduation in high school. Otherwise, he would be a true freshman at Minnesota this season.</I>

Hey! He said "don't print that!"

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Can someone help me with a few details? I am trying to recall ncaa game, gophers vs michigan/msu? Think it was 97 but not sure. Gophers were playing a lackluster game, then rassmussen cut through the crease and decked the goalie. Picked up a 10 min penalty.

The Gophers don't have to worry about UMD getting the last change in a potential head to head match up.

Yes, they do. If they face each other in the NCAAs and UMD is the #1 seed and the Gophers are not, UMD gets last change as the higher seed. He's not talking about the F5.

Correct. I don't care about having to face UMD in the Final Five, nor in the Frozen Four. I do care if they have to face each other in the regional though.

I was talking about the WCHA and not the NCAA.

They're going lose on Friday.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would you care when MN faces them in the NCAA's? The stakes are the same: lose and you're done.
