Playing hockey at a higher level took a back seat to leaving a legacy for Lakeville South's Justin Kloos this past hockey season.
The high-scoring forward decided to stay home for his senior year, and that loyalty was rewarded with a banner season for the Cougars and the ultimate individual award for Kloos on Sunday.
Kloos, a University of Minnesota recruit, was selected Minnesota's Mr. Hockey Award winner, presented by the Minnesota Minute Men, at a ceremony at the RiverCentre.
The 5-foot-9, 167-pound speedster had 41 goals and 62 assists to lead the Cougars to a third-place finish in the Class 2A state tournament last week.
"I never could have imagined I could win an award like this," Kloos said. "All (of the other finalists) deserved to win this just as much as I did. This season was incredible. I didn't expect it. I was given a great opportunity in my senior season."
Kloos, who finished his prep career with 238 points, played 13 games for Waterloo of the United States Hockey League following the completion of his junior season. The tug to play his senior year in the USHL was strong, but it couldn't overcome the force field that pulled him back to high school to be with his teammates and friends.
"It's really a testament to his character and the special type of player he is that he came back to his roots and finished his prep career," Cougars coach Kurt Weber said. "He's the kind of kid that wants to give back to the community. He wanted to
continue making a tradition at Lakeville South and to leave a legacy. He was living that dream that a high school kid always has."
Kloos ended his career with the winning goal in Lakeville South's 2-1 victory over Moorhead in the big-school third-place game. In the quarterfinals, he had a goal and an assist in the unseeded Cougars' 3-2 upset victory over top-ranked and top-seeded Duluth East.
"Coming back to play with my best friends Joe Freemark and Alex Harvey made this the most memorable season ever," Kloos said. "That's why I stuck around."
Said Weber: "This award is just the icing on the cake for a great kid who had a phenomenal year."
The other Mr. Hockey finalists were Duluth East's Jake Randolph and Dom Toninato, Eagan's Will Merchant and Michael Zajac, Breck's Grant Opperman, Duluth Marshall's Judd Peterson, Hill-Murray's Charlie Sampair, Hermantown's Jared Thomas and St. Thomas Academy's Eric Schurhamer.
