2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Man, this team is maddening.

Some nights they could beat the Red Wings.

Other nights they couldn't beat a Red Wing bantam team.

Inconsistency like this is doomed to failure in the post season.

I guess on the bright side, if they do manage to make it to Tampa, they won't have to play on a Friday.

Why does this team need it's collective arse kicked to get their attention?

We won the MacNaughton, made it to the Final Five and it sounds like we have a guaranteed NCAA appearance as well. I guess I will just enjoy the ride and hopefully it leads into April.

And after the events of the past couple of years it's a welcome change.

You're right.

This team is just so close to doing some post season damage. But this nightly "which team is going to show up tonight" is going to be their downfall.

Not only are we guaranteed an NCAA spot (which was reallllllllly likely before these games), we still have a minute shot at a 1 seed. Chances are we'll be the top #2 seed, but just saying.

A #1 seed would likely be out of our hands. Lots of help needed for that. But I'm okay with a #2 Still should get a decent first round game.

Tech winning pretty much killed our chances at a 1 seed. Yeah. Whee simple math (c).

It's going to be an interesting offseason. They're going to be overloaded on defense. I'm wondering if Helgeson will get signed. Sometimes the NHL teams don't like to wait till the senior year and he's a big strong kid.

Given the Wild's scoring woes and how well Haula is playing, I'm starting to worry about him too.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

We don't have two 20 goal scorers yet but we will before the season is out. Hopefully the 6 unanswered goals opens the floodgates for the rest of the playoffs.

I'd love to be as optimistic as our head coach is about Bjugstad returning but it is just tough to think that way given how players tend to bolt these days. I do think it is a major advantage that his uncle was an NHL player and an ex-Gopher and the family as a whole seems to prefer him to stay. But I still think odds are better he goes.

I can see your logic on Helgeson and I suppose anything is possible there. I don't know that New Jersey would be all that worried about losing him though. It's not like he has been great in college. He's been OK.

If they don't lose anybody on defense, I really believe they should bump Marshall up to forward for the season. He's a great skater and he certainly is offensively gifted. It would maximize the talent on the ice if they can make that move, slide the two freshmen into the lineup, and then adjust the rest of the D group accordingly.

I think it is going to come down to how Haula feels about academics. I'm not concerned about the Wild actively trying to grab him.

The other thing to consider is Haula is going to need to fulfill his military requirements in Finland. I know he has til his late 20s to take care of it and they do seem to make adjustments for pro athletes but you never know if maybe he goes back home, plays pro there, and fulfills his requirements at the same time. I'm not saying this will happen but it is something to consider.

He's been fun to watch the past couple weeks.....during and after games. He is really having fun.

Brenthoven,

I am still not sure where this idea is coming from. Do you mean the overall #1? Or, just the #1 seed in a regional (ie overall 1,2,3,or 4)?

For Minnesota to be the #1 seed at St Paul is still very possible. All it takes is to win 2 games there this week, and a little luck. I just plugged it into the calculator on slack.net.

Basically, it's like this:
If BC wins HE, and Minn wins WCHA, Minn ends up either #3 or #4.
If BU wins HE, Minn cannot get a #1.
If ML wins HE, and Ferris does not win CCHA, and Minn wins WCHA, Minn ends up #4.

Those first two statements contradict each other, if I'm reading this right.

To be clear - overall #1 (ie, of all 16 teams in the tourney, highest PWR), is out of reach.
Regional #1 (ie of all 16 teams, among the top 4) is very possible, as I wrote.
#1 seed in St Paul means "Regional #1"

Is that still confusing?

And, where I wrote #3 or #4 in the above post, that means overall seed. So, in all those cases, Minnesota would be top seed among the 4 teams in St Paul.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

I guess the real question is, can MN and UMD both be 1 seeds to avoid the same region? If not, having them both as 2 seeds and UND as a 3.

Of course, given our non-conference record...can we get all 3 in the same region? ;)

Oh, now that is easier answered. Minn and UMD cannot end up both #1s (unless something really strange happens, like Western Michigan winning the CCHA tourney.).

However, in many cases where Minn is a #1, UMD would be a #2, and be assigned to Green Bay, or even out east, because of the way the bracket goes (1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6, 4 v 5 in the quarterfinals). There is not much chance that Minn ends up #4, and UMD #5, so it is more likely the 2 schools be split if Minn is a #1.

In many cases where UMD is a #1, they would be in the St Paul region.

As for UND as well, it won't happen that all 3 schools be in St Paul, because then 2 of them would have to play each other in round 1, and the NCAA avoids that like the plague.

When you said #1, didn't know if you meant #1 overall, or just a #1 seed. :)

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Gut feeling is that UND gets sent to another region and the Gophers and UMD will be in St. Paul.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Well, it's not like my gut is always right. lol

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Ferris State just went down hard. I really, really wish I had my PWR spreadsheet updated...
