This Marc Staal contract situation is starting to vex me.

Well hey, Sather looked past Cam Fowler and Brandon Gormley to get a guy they call "The Undertaker." See, there's an instantly worse thing to pay attention to.

Wade. Freaking. Redden.

Box!
Well yeah, don't get me wrong, I've been on the "fire Sather" bandwagon for years now, but coming to a contract agreement with a homegrown star (Mirtle rated him the best defensive defenseman in the NHL this year) who's an RFA is the biggest no-brainer a GM can have.

(Insert snark about Sather actually having no brain here.)

Hes negotiating. An RFA is essentially the only time the GM really has the upper hand in negotiations, so I don't really have a problem with him trying to get the best contract he can get.

The thing is we shouldn't have to pay more than $3.5 million for him at this point in his career. I'd like it more around the $3 range.

He doesn't put up the offensive numbers and have that part of the game to be able to get $4-$5 mil.

While that's the case, I think you also have to take the long-term view that if you want to be able to keep him when he gets to UFA (and I have to assume Sather does, or he's even dumber than I'm giving him credit for), that might be easier if you don't take advantage of his RFA status to force a low-ball offer on him now.

God, that Redden contract seems like more of an albatross each time I look at it. It makes the Drury and Rozsival contracts seem downright reasonable, ridiculous though it is that Drury will be the highest-paid player on the team this year.

UNH's Daniel Winnik gets traded from Phoenix to Colorado in exchange for a 4th rounder.

i couldnt believe they passed over fowler. i guess they dont think he is good enough in his own end? they already have a few too many offensive minded players.

i'm not happy they traded bobby sanguinetti away either

The Devils are doing their best to try and win me over.

They've hired Adam Oates to join Larry Robinson as assistant coach under John MacLean.

I think maybe they felt Sanguinetti was surplus after being impressed with Del Zotto this year.

Don't fight it. It'll only hurt a little. ;)

Until you have to start watching their games. Then it'll be like that scene in A Clockwork Orange where they have to pry his eyelids open. :p

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

They could put Scotty Bowman, Herb Brooks, and John MacInnes behind that bench, and I still wouldn't like them. :p

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Modano is done as a Star

And if I had to guess, Modano is likely done, period.

A well earned retirement, if it goes that route. Hard to imagine him just plopping anywhere else. The sentimentalist would point towards the Wild, but he already recieved a hearty ovation in the last weeks of last season, so he's already recieved what he would expect to get from coming back. And it's not like Detroit has any need for him, if he wanted to go the hometown route.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Detroit doesn't have a role he can suitably play, and MN is probably more interested in youth.
