2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

I don't see Pronger's deal as being that bad, since Philly kinda screwed themselves with a 35+ contract there.

The 'Nucks might actually prefer a re-do on Luongo's contract, what with the level of nonchalance he's expressed in the last two postseasons.

Still, I think it's too late for the NHL to make a move on deals that have already been struck for so long. The line's been drawn, you've made your point, now start the reviewing process earlier in the future.

Yeah, technically Pronger's is still under investigation, but it's not cap circumvention because they're on the hook for the full length. Holmgren probably should be punished because I think he was trying to evade the cap, but any fines would like kicking a toddler after he fell flat on his face.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

I'll be stunned if he doesn't work out a different deal with New Jersey.

.

Ovah: I doubt anything will happen with the other contracts. It's a matter of "we voided Ilya's deal, so we'll 'pretend' to look at these other deals as a matter of 'fairness.'"

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

The league is investigating Luongo's deal now. Weeeeeeeeeeee.

The investigations of his, Hossa's, Pronger's contracts were never closed. The league now has a little more ammo, but I doubt anything will happen. They already approved those contracts, so any investigation at this point would have to prove collusion to retire and relieve them of the cap hit.

Luongo's contract is a piece of crap in the same mold that Kovalchuk's wannabe deal was. Pronger's they'll let live because while they got that cap hit down, they're punished if he retires. Hossa's deal has a fun side-effect. If they decided to spike that one, well, he played last year in the first year of said deal. So if the Blackhawks played a season with a guy whose contract was a salary cap-circumventing deal... What does that say about the Stanley Cup they won?

Of course it's within their power technically to go back and invalidate Hossa's contract and such, but if they really wanted to address the situation they should have done so when the contract was in the initial approval stages. I don't like the idea of trying to change or asterisk the past accomplishments, just fine the hell out of Hossa/Blackhawks if they feel the need to.

Given that Pronger and Hossa were on Cup finalist teams under bad contracts, I think the league has no choice but to replay the 2010 Stanley Cup with the Conference runner-ups. :D ;)

And they didn't which is where my major problem exists in all this. Kovalchuk's contract was the straw that broke the camel's back and now they're like, "Well if we could get that one tossed out, what else can we retroactively fix?"

Bruins now say that Savard's contract is getting re-investigated now. This league is about as conscience of its PR as a pack of rabid jackals. "We were too gutless to quash these stupid deals before, but now that we've got a ruling on our side it's payback time." Idiotic.

But wouldnt the Bruins like if the NHL rejected the contract? Because weren't the Bruins trying to get rid of Savard or was that just an incorrect rumor?

If Savard stays, Ryder goes to the AHL and they have a more consistent offense.

If he gets booted, a rookie becomes your potential first line center and Ryder stays in the NHL - and that's all if the Bruins didn't re-negotiate a deal with him. They'd get the salary relief, sure, but they'd be a worse team.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Can't see the league going back and overturning contracts that were already in place. I don't think that would be right. Going forward I think they have to do a better job at rejecting them right away.

For two years anyhow.

Slapping down extensions that haven't kicked in yet would be hilarious to see, and infuriating. Erasing history because it was screwed up in the first place is moronic.

can I go back in time and convince Pooley not to leave? Bad on us...

The league invalidates Hossa's deal, and Chicago vacates the Cup win.

The league invalidates Savard's deal, and Boston vacates blowing a 3-0 series lead?

Any word on Illya's deal? Is it just the Devs in the hunt or is there an 11th hour pitch being made by someone else?

The Devils are probably going to get another deal worked out that better fits the NHL's guidelines. Deals like Pronger's, Savard's and Hossa's are iffy, but deals like Lecavalier's are OK. Whether the Devils decide to try and test the limits again or just fall in line remains to be seen.
