2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Todd White traded to NY Rangers from Atlanta. Finally, a center for Gaborik! ;)

Edit: When I originally posted this, I didn't know who was going the other way. Turns out to be Brashear and Rismiller. I'm sure the Rangers fans are very happy to be free of Brashear.

For Rissmiller and Brashear.

Seriously Rick Dudley? Waddell could have done better.

*edit* Okay, maybe it's not so bad. Thrashers immediately put Brashear on waivers to buy out his contract.

SarahSpain: RT @ChrisKuc: #Blackhawks confirm they are walking away from Antti's Niemi's arbitration award and have signed Marty Turco to a one-year ...

Goodbye Niemi, hello Toivonen+Turco.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Ding dong, the witch is dead! Don't let the door hit your *** on the way out, Brashear.

(Let it hit you in the face and break your eye socket, you thug.)

If I'm correct, Brashear's contract will still clount against the cap for the Thrashers, as it was 35+ deal. Not that they're really in any cap situation...

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

TSN is reporting 1 year/$1.3mm for Turco. Painful outcome versus 2 years/$4+ mm for Philadelphia, but it would have been very difficult to see him in a Flyers jersey so all is well I guess.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Turco and Crawford will be the likely pairing. Toivonen can hang out with Huet on the bus in Rockford.
So, what... after winning their first Cup in decades, the Hawks decided that they didn't enjoy it and would rather not do it again next year?

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

At the end of the day, as much as I'm going to joke about Turco, I think they made the right move given their current salary problems. Get a capable veteran guy on the cheap while you wait to shed a couple more bad contracts. Turco's not going to be lights out, but he'll be playing behind a better team than he was in Dallas, and has more experience as a full-time starter than Niemi (who did only play half of Chicago's regular season games last year).

Granted, he often becomes a mental midget as soon as he sees a red and white flying tire, and doesn't have the greatest NHL playoffs rep, but that's why it's only a one year deal. The hope is that Turco sees this as his last big chance to finally win a Cup, and puts on a show come April 2011.

But I doubt it. :D

They made their bed with the contracts they handed out. Just think of how well this would've gone over had they NOT won the Cup last year. This would've been happening either way.

Sure, but it wouldn't necessarily have to be Turco.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Rangers get rid of Brashear and Rismiller for Todd White?

I'll take that in a heartbeat.

Granted I know White is 35 now and only had 26 points last year. But he was injured for parts of the season and we're talking about a guy scored 70 points two years ago that was traded for two minor leaguers!

I don't expect 70 points from him but I don't think 40-50 is out of the question if he's paired on one of the top two lines and that's a hell of an improvement over what we had last year.

I can't believe I'm about to say this...but..Good job Sather?

The only thing that could have made this better was if the rumored involvement of Rozsival in this deal turned out to be true.

Sadly, we're still saddled with his and Redden's atrocious contracts that will continue to stop this team from being a legitimate contender in the East.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Something I saw mentioned on another board is that by getting rid of two crappy guys and bringing back just one, the Rangers make it easier to potentially dump Redden in Hartford and still have the Pack be within the AHL constraints of five veteran players.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Bruins have said they will not buy anyone out this offseason.

It seems pretty obvious they are going with Sturm on the LTIR and Ryder in the AHL to bury that 4 million cap hit.

The B's still have to sign Seguin...prob 3.75 million dollar cap hit based on what I was reading. Something has to give here when Sturm is ready to come back from injury.

FYI, five veterans are all that can PLAY on a given night. Nothing is stopping (or has stopped) a team from signing more than five veterans. The AHL has none of these silly salary caps that the NHL, ECHL, and lesser leagues have; AND the AHL doesn't have a roster limit. The only constraint is the veteran rule.

From the PHPA (AHL CBA):
http://www.phpa.com/en/content/home/about/ahl-collective-bargaining-agreement/

Each AHL Club must dress for each regularly scheduled or play-off game, at least eleven (11) Players, other than goaltenders, who have played in a total of not more than two hundred and sixty (260) regular season games in the National Hockey League, American Hockey League, International Hockey League, or any European Elite League, prior to the start of the season, and one (1) player, other than goaltenders, who has played in a total of not more than three hundred and twenty (320) regular season games in the National Hockey League, American Hockey League, International Hockey League, or any European Elite League, prior to the start of the season. Any Player who participates in European Elite League games during a hockey season in which the Player would be eligible to play in the Canadian Hockey League (excluding an overage year) shall not have such games count in the calculation of the two hundred and sixty (260) regular season games. Players on loan from the National Hockey League for a first fourteen (14) day conditioning period shall not be affected by the aforesaid experience requirement.

In the event a Club dresses fewer than seventeen (17) skaters, the number eleven (11) shall be reduced accordingly. In the event the Member Clubs elect to dress eighteen (18) skaters, the development rule minimum number of eleven (11) shall be increased to twelve (12).

For the record, the AHL recently allowed the rule change to elect to dress 18 skaters for every game. Up until the 2007-08 season, the AHL could only dress 17 skaters.

*edit* Oh, and International Hockey League refers to the one that was merged into the AHL in 2002, NOT the fake IHL that was formed two years ago from the former <strike>Colonial</strike> United Hockey League

Chicago better pray they don't face Detroit in the playoffs, because they're losing every game in the state of Michigan next season.

They'd also better carry every lucky charm they have as well. Any injury to just about anyone is going to be a severe setback.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

I think I'm going to hit the next person with my goalie stick that suggests that San Jose is going to jump all over signing Niemi.
