Big day for Russians/Ukrainians.

Alexander Frolov signs a one-year deal with the Rangers for $3 million.

Alexei Ponikarovsky signs a one-year deal with the Kings.

Matt Moulson avoided arbitration and re-signed with the Islanders for one year at $2.4 million.

Blake Wheeler's arbitration decision has yet to be announced.

Talk about youre slow offseason - I had to dig to find the thread. Bruins officially sign Wheeler to his 2.2M arbitration award (no surprise there), and are now officially well over the cap (also no surprise).

Sturm will go on LTIR buying them the relief they need. They'll still be right up against it, though, with the bonus penalty.

This has always been a gray area for me. Here's CapGeek on the issue:

Teams receive cap relief when a player is considered to have a "bona-fide long-term injury" — injuries that cause a player to miss at least 10 games or 24 days. This is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of the CBA.

Just because a player is on LTIR does not automatically grant the team extra cap space. In the event a player is placed on LTIR, his cap hit still counts toward the team's overall cap payroll. Relief only comes if replacing the player's salary pushes the team's cap payroll to date over the cap. The amount of relief is limited to the amount the team has gone over the cap, not the entire amount of the injured player's salary.

It's a confusing issue. What sticks out for me is that relief only comes when the replacing player pushes the team over the cap - implying that the team must be cap compliant to begin with (obviously). I think they'll be ok to start the season, but depending on where they are against the cap when Sturm returns, they're going to have to clear a lot of space.

Be curious to hear other interpretations. I read KPD's piece a few weeks ago (the one that basically said "no worries"), but after the Globe (I'm not sure if it was KPD or Fluto) misunderstood the impact of the Thomas over 35 signing when that went down, I stopped trusting them on cap matters.

Another trade with San Jose where you get some cheap pieces and send us Chara?

Interesting notes regarding Ilya for the coming week(s), from Rotoworld:

"The NHL rejected Kovalchuk's heavily frontloaded 17-year/$102 contract with the New Jersey Devils on the grounds that it circumvented the salary cap. The NHLPA filed a grievance on Kovalchuk's behalf on Monday, but before the two sides could go any further, they first needed to hire a "system" arbitrator. Now that they have one, the arbitrator could announce his decision by the end of next week. The arbitrator can either decide to force the NHL to accept Kovalchuk's contract or allow their decision to stand. If the arbitrator rules in favor of the NHL, the NHL will be allowed to punish the Devils and/or Kovalchuk. The NHL is not obligated to do so, but they would be allowed to impose a fine of up to $5 million on the New Jersey Devils, which would also reduce their salary cap space by the same amount. The NHL could also take away draft picks or hand Kovalchuk a fine of up to $1 million."

Kind of an under the radar move, but last night's deal of Wisniewski to NYI for a 3rd rounder was a nice pick up by Snow. Wsiniewski played a lot of minutes for Anaheim last year and put up 30 points.

Has anyone seen Anaheim's defense? Good lord. The only guys with any experience are Visnovsky, Lydman, and Brookbank. They're either going to be very young back there, or they're going to have to bring in some additional bodies. I suppose Cam Fowler pretty much has a spot to lose at this point....
