2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

I dont believe it one bit since he's the one that reported it but a couple of the Rangers' fan groups on Facebook are going ape$h!t right now.

If you're keeping up with following him or with other people that follow him, I'd suggest that you stop listening to them. The guy is a fraud.

I haven't been following him. Didn't I make that clear with my last post?

I simply said what the Rangers Facebook Group was going crazy over today.

Someone needs to create a fake email account and send Eklund "inside info" on some random made up trade. I know this probably happens already, but it'd be fun to know it was someone here. :D

I could see that. Lou isn't exactly known for throwing around money.
Lou is very shrewd. Kovalchuk has now made it known that he wants to play for the Devils. Teams like the Kings can't just sit on the sidelines, they have to make other moves. I don't see much happening other than Ilya has to sit down with the Devils and bang out something that works.

As an aside: why not have a basic rule, something like the lowest annual salary can't be less than 50% of the average contract value per year? So in Ilya's case, if the average salary per season is $6mm, he can't have any annual salary less than $3mm. You might quibble with 50%, but something like this would at least make it clear what works and what doesn't.

I think these manipulative deals continue until there is a clear rule in place. Kovalchuk's deal doesn't work but Hossa's does? Just model your deal more closely to Hossa's.

Journalism? Only if it's yellow.

Don't understand why Chicago traded Reasoner for Taffe. I thought they traded for Reasoner to plug the Madden hole with a cheaper solution. Reasoner isn't very expensive (I think a $1.2mm cap hit versus Madden's $2.75mm or so last year) and while Taffe is half the cap hit I don't see him fulfilling that type of role. I guess it's just more salary dumping versus a strategic move.

Total salary dump. They need to scrimp and save where they can. They've still got Niemi to worry about as well as filling out the roster. Jack Skille is likely going to be their third or fourth line center this year. This trade put them under the cap by about $140,000 and they've still got two guys they're waiting to finalize deals with PLUS Antti Niemi. A million+ for a third or fourth line center with that team's salary issues was way too much.

Love the dudes with the huge tattoos in 20s swimwear. :)

BUT09 - pretty sure they wear speedos mostly. GLM had a twitter link with a slideshow from the party and there were some nice ones in there of the men in proper beach attire.

Just because you girls are so nice, here it is.

That sounds like a very reasonable idea. Unfortunately, it's the type of reasonable idea that would have to be negotiated into the CBA and not dictated by the Commissioner's Office.

Another potential idea (again, would have to be negotiated into the CBA) would essentially change the rules if the contract takes you beyond a certain age (let's take 40 as an example). If the contract takes the player beyond age 40, the cap hit each year is equal to the amount the player receives that particular year. This would probably put an end to some of this madness, although you'd like have a ton of deals extending to age 39. For a lot of the top players, however, at least it's reasonable that they'd still be playing at a decent level at that age.

I like MoFan's idea, and I could see the NHLPA agreeing to it - it guarantees a decent payday (as opposed to Ilya's deal).

This would be for the entire length of the contract, right? So Ilya's cap hit this coming year, if his 17-year deal is approved would be 11.5 million (or whatever)? Might work, but I think you'd still see teams give long contracts, just with the money spread out a little differently.

Yes, but if the money is spread more evenly, it seems like that is much more within the spirit of the rule in the first place, right??

Now that I've thought about this, though, I could see some major shenangians with my own plan. Imagine that Keith, Toews and Kane all came up for renewal at age 30. Each signs a 12 year contract. Theorietically, you could stagger each player's massive payouts every third year, so in any given year you're taking a big cap hit on only one player.

Nevertheless, I think the point is that there are alternatives here, but it's up for the parties to agree upon them.
