2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Ricky gets 4.5 every year. It is that bad. This one probably got the axe because it takes him to 44, and the last 6 years are at the current minimum. (which by 2021 will probably be too low) Kovalchuk would get 2.75 for the last 5 years. Hossa will get $8 million, Luongo over 13 million. At least the last two pretend like they'd still be around.

So, basically, the Devils want to pay Kovalchuk a bunch of money, but don't want a big cap hit. So, they give him a looooong, mega-front-loaded contract and then don't expect him to be playing at the end of it, so the money at the end is almost nil (relatively), as it doesn't make sense to give a retired hockey player $6 million/year?

Other teams have done the same thing, but the payouts at the end are higher, so it's not quite as obvious?

And the Garth Snow just REALLY wanted RickyDP for 15 years.

(I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to NHL contracts.)

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Pronger's has to be set aside, IMO, as it's a 35+ contract and Holmgren shot himself on the foot on that.

Hossa and Luongo going to 42 were bad, but probably borderline bad. They're also making some money in their last 5 years (8 million and 13). Ilya playing for minimum wage from 39-44? Yeah, that's believable. NJ forgot to put lipstick on the pig before setting her up in the kissing booth.

I guess Buttman isn't as stupid as we thought. Unless he had a flying monkey that whispered sweet nothings into his ear and told him to reject it.

My guess is, they'll restructure it, but make it more like Hossa's, so they have a real gripe if it's rejected again.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

One conspiracy theory is that the flying monkey was Lou himself, and this whole contract is a owner pushed thing because of the ticket and jersey sales from having Ilya.

Pretty much, though I thought the Dipi contract was a Milbury Mastery.

I could see that. Lou isn't exactly known for throwing around money.

Signing and marketing a star player to make money? Say it ain't so! ;)

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

The NHL is run by chimps.

This "strike down" won't stand a court challenge unless the NHL can find some documented proof that the Devils don't intend on paying the last few years.

Given Lou's curious quotes today, it's not that crazy of a theory.

The NHL just likes to be as inconsistent as possible at all times. It's clearly not just a Colin Campbell trait, it starts at the top and permeates through.

I'm still guessing that they'll rewrite the contract, but it'll be basically the same results.

Maybe it's super-genius and they did this on purpose, to prevent teams from doing that to any current (or possible) Devil in the future. I may be on something, or onto something.

Re-writing it might make Lou's skin crawl. Moving a lot of that money into the final five years (my guess at the solution to make it more stomach-able) makes buying him out in the end a lot tougher to stomach. This is just all for show as far as I'm concerned. New Jersey will get it reconfigured and the Devils owner will have made a new enemy with Lil' Gary.

Of course. You know, just to see the endgame, I'd love if the Devils signed Cindy when he becomes a free agent, restricted or otherwise. Just to p* Buttman off. And offer a sensible contract, too.

I mean, c'mon, whaddya expect? They're a Mickey Mouse operation.....

My biggest fear with this rejection, after the league looked past every other deal like this in past seasons, is that it's all a dog and pony show to set things up for the coming labor war in 2012. The owners and the league are using this deal to make their stand to hold up in two years to say "Hey, we tried to correct things!"

That's why you get the big bucks, Mr Superstar. :p

The cap works, somewhat. If they made it more NFL-like than NBA-like, I think we'd have a winner (penalties, signing bonuses, etc). That is, if I understand the three leagues' caps as much as a layman can understand.

The cap is pretty busted. It works better for the players than it does for the owners now and the owners WON the last round of bargaining. How f-cked is that?

The owners were kinda smart.....sorta....maybe....

No league? No money.

The players? There's other leagues. Not paying on par with the NHL, but there are other leagues.....

With some of the big names and big money flowing abroad, they've got much more "**** you, I'm going to go play in Russia" leverage than they did last time.

Yep. This could become a weird time. I hope not, and think not, but it could.

I think this has been discussed earlier in the thread, but what happens to the cap hit when the player is bought out? Say Ilya is bought out with 5 years left, does that wipe out his cap hit for those next 5 years?

If he is bought out the cap hit is something like half of the cap hit spread out over twice the years remaining. If he retires I think there is zero cap hit.
