2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

GLM, I know I'm late in commenting, but so was your article about Kovalchuk holding out for "more than Ovechkin" money. That's pretty much what he's doing. Every Thrashers fan knew that once Ovechkin got his deal, Kovy's would be just a bit higher.

Still love the thread title.

Illya asking for more than Ovie's contract is insane. If he thinks he worth that much, then I smell that he will be going to the KHL to play for some Russian mobsters.

yeah, gotta say I am sick of seeing NHL.com pretend to be buddy-buddy with kovalchuk by calling him kovy. The dude snipes well on PP situations, but isn't worth what he is asking which is why most teams are probably avoiding the dude. He's improved his +/- in the last few years, but for someone who can net 50 in a season, being negative still says a lot...

"But he was a negative on horrible Thrashers teams! On a good team he'd be way better than Ovechkin!" [/sarcasm]

Kovy never adjusted to John Anderson's style of play. More than a few players mentioned it on return trips to the Wolves. I think him and his agent feel that he would have better numbers on a better team.

Rick Nash set the bar for "Good franchise player on a crappy team," and Ovechkin added the "Better Russian player on a crappy team," so of course Kovy feels that he could command better dollars for being around the league as long as he has.

You should be better at reading by-lines. :)

Kovalchuk returning to New Jersey. Terms yet to be announced but this is confirmed. No Eklund BS here.

Eh, I saw you posted the link on your twitter feed, I didn't read the actual article. :o Feel free to pass along the message.

*edit* 8.5 cap hit? NJ trying to be the Blackhawks 2.0?

Riley Nash is leaving Cornell and signing his three-year entry-level deal with the Carolina Hurricanes. It's very possible he'll be starting for the Hurricanes this year.

He'll be wearing red and white next year too!! Really a smart playmaker and overall heady guy, I'm curious whether he has the wheels for the NHL. We'll see soon enough, I hope so.

I'd like to petition for a name change for the thread title, adding "and Holmgren is a fool"

Seriously, what the hell.

To fill in the blanks for those that don't know... TRADE!

Tampa gets: Simon Gagne
Philly gets: Matt Walker, 4th Round pick

The NHL can't approve that insanity, can they?

Seeing how the money drops off year to year, likely after the first two or three, is going to be fascinating. I'd bet that he ends up making maybe a million a year by the last few years of that deal. There are rules in place so that you can't make it a complete and total sham, but 17 year deals are pretty much a sham from the get-go.

I'd like the NHLPA and the owners to get together and limit the max length on a contract at 6 years. If a player has been with the same org for 6 years, he can be signed for 8 years.

8 years should be the absolute longest amount of time a guy could be signed for.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Not knowing much about this, I assume the point of the contract is that he will retire before it is up and the extra years just lower the cap hit by him being paid less at the end. The NHL should just force teams to eat the cap hit even if the player is retired if they sign a contract over x number of years.

Even if Gagne seems to get injured every other year, it's still a lopsided deal. I had heard that Philly was desperate to dump some salary, so that's a pretty nice move by Yzerman to unload a terrible contact and give the Lightning a fairly legit Top 6 (at least when Gagne isn't on IR).

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

The 17 years is less shocking than the low amount of money he took.

That's only a $6 mil a year contract.

He rejected 12 yrs/$101 mil from Atlanta (8.4 mil/yr).
