What this game is going to come down to, even though Hoffman blew yet another save, is the inning where Gomez had a leadoff double, and the Crew could not get him in. Pathetic. Especially with Braun and Fielder batting after him.

Plenty of opportunities to win this game. Why didn't Edmonds go through the catcher when the plate was blocked like that? Pretty dumb attempt to score there.

What a great week to be a Brewers' fan. Ueck could be out for most of the season, "Trevor Time" looks like it may be strictly in the past, swept by the Cubs, and now they can't even win a home series against Pittsburgh. I'm glad I didn't name my dog Bernie like I'd originally considered. He probably would have dropped dead even though he's 6 and in good healthy.

And that throw from the corner when the winning run was rounding the bases was terrible. He looks old out there. And why take Hart out anyway, at least he's got some wheels. If he was in the game, I think they stop that runner @ 3rd.

Is the new pitching coach screwing up the old veteran pitchers with his "approach"? Wolf, Davis and Trevor are all way underperforming.

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers - Pitching: Quantity, or Quality????

Edmonds is a veteran pinch hitter and occasional starter at this point. They have been playing him a little more because he was swinging a decent bat to start the season, but they are playing him way more than they ideally should. Straight platoon is even a little too much for him. I have a feeling he'll breakdown soon if they don't lighten the load. Maybe a little more Jody Gerut.
EDIT - And right after posting this I went to the Brewers' website to see the gametimes for this next series and I see a story "Edmonds hurts back against Bucs".

It was encouraging to see Suppan pitch well last night. Granted he first continued Doug Davis' work and ensured the game was out of reach before mowing down the last 11 batters in order, but he did finally get some guys out.

BOB UECKER UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL HEART SURGERY
Milwaukee Brewers radio broadcaster Bob Uecker underwent successful heart surgery today at Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital. The six-hour surgery was performed by Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Cardiothoracic Surgeon Alfred C. Nicolosi, MD.

It is expected that Uecker will remain hospitalized at Froedtert for approximately five to seven days, with a full recovery expected to run 10-12 weeks.

"On behalf of the entire Brewers organization, we are relieved to know that Bob's surgery went as planned, and we look forward to his complete and speedy recovery," said Brewers Chairman and Principal Owner Mark Attanasio. "I know Bob appreciates just how eager Brewer fans are to hear his wit, passion, and knowledge of baseball as well as all things Milwaukee-since listening to him is such a big part of our summers. Get well, Bob."

Was at the Padres-Brewers game. Man, the Brewers fans in front of me were super unpleasant. Totally unlike any of the Brewers fans I know. Tried to chat with them about Miller Park, etc. Nothing doing.

This is my stone cold lock of the century. The Brewers will score a run in tonight's game.

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers - Pitching: Quantity, or Quality????

Somebody give me a reason for some optimism because I'm really down on these guys right now. One run produced by the position players over 4 games. One friggin' run! I wish I wouldn't have been too busy cleaning our house for our daughter's birthday party on Saturday evening because as I watched Yo mow 'em down in the 1st inning while pushing the vaccum I thought to myself this has the feel of one of those 3-1 or 2-1 type of wins where Yo dominates on the mound and gets an RBI or two along the way.

When I get frustrated I tend to look up numbers and even when they come up ugly it seems to be therapeutic for some reason. In the 4 games the position players were 24 for 121, which gets them a lofty .198 average. They did manage to strike out 29 times, which is nearly a K every 4 ABs. In those 121 ABs, 60 runners were on base. Not a single one of them was driven in. The one RBI by a position player over the 4 game span was Weeks' solo HR. Of course the single RBI was matched by the pitchers in their 11 ABs with Gallardo's HR. FYI for comparison on the batting average, the pitchers were 3 for 11 to hit .273.

So they can hit and the easy joke would of course be if they could only pitch, but outside of Doug Davis and the destined to fail brief Jeff Suppan experiment I really can't be too upset with the starting pitching. Days where the offense went thru the motions and late bullpen implosions have hurt this team much worse than a starting rotation most of us hoped would simply be decent enough to get by with. Over the last week they went 2-5. Using the normal quality start standard of 3 ERs or less over 6 innings or more, Yo has given them 2, Wolf gave them 1, Bush gave them 1, and Narveson could have given them one had he not been pulled after 5 because he hadn't really been extended as a starting pitcher this season. Davis was horribly unlucky again in not being very good and Wolf struggled yesterday, but the starting pitching kept them in games well enough this week to have a winning record.

It saddens me to say this, but I was rooting extra hard for the Bucks yesterday simply because I hoped they could last another week or so to span my sports interests that much closer to Packers' training camp. With horrible baseball and no ability to at least turn on the radio and hear Ueck entertain me I enjoy the off days right now more than the game days. I try to be level-headed but right now I'm running very low on the positive side of the slate for the Brewers. Somebody please give me something. OK, rant over. Thanks for letting me vent some frustration.

The hitting will come around, but as long as the starting pitchers are going to allow 4+ runs per 5-6 innings, it's over.

Hooray for draft picks? :o

Trying to find the silver lining...

And now a 9 spot against a good pitcher after the performance in San Diego. If anyone figures these guys out please let me know. A series win in LA for a team who usually struggles mightily on their west coast swings presents another opportunity for the spark they need to string a few together.

doesn't it figure the one game I'm able to go to in SD is the only one TG didn't play? and we had tickets for Saturday night, but I had the stomach flu and didn't go. At least we saw a win at Dodger Stadium yesterday.

p.s. was so rooting for Zaun to get the triple in his last AB last night. Chad Moeller needed only a triple last for his cycle too, and got one. ;)

I was at the Friday game, didn't remember you were in town until after, my apologies.

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers - Pitching: Quantity, or Quality????

Good to see Davis come around last night. His numbers of 5.1 with 3 ERs aren't amazing, but I thought he looked good and his defense didn't do him any favors. There were several plays not ruled errors that they could have made to take about 20 pitches off his count and probably get him thru 7 innings. Braun got a horrible jump on that ball in the first costing him a couple of runs.

Weeks really got them going. This is what we need to see from Rickie if he can just stay healthy. Speaking of healthy, what are they doing with Edmunds? My wife looked more comfortable moving around when she was 8 months pregnant. They need to strongly consider shutting him down on the 15 day DL so this goes away and doesn't keep lingering. It doesn't make sense to have him hobbling around out there all stiff when you have another left handed hitting option for the OF on the bench.
