2010 DII Football

Re: 2010 DII Football

I remember asking Tech's athletic director why they only play 10 games and she claimed that losing it can hurt you more than winning it helps you. Wonder if she thinks that now.

Well, it all depends on what that team does. If say Tech had scheduled UMD and lost to them, that loss would have still hurt them if they went lost to Saggy and Hillsdale as well on the year. And if they had brought in say Minnesota-Crookston, and beaten them, their SOS would have been worse than what Ferris was for Hillsdale.

Personally, I would like to see the GLIAC go to nine games, and then sign a deal to play a crossover game with the NSIC. The League comishes get to pick 3 teams from their league and gets to pick who they get to matchup with. Then the rest just go into a random drawing. Personally, If I was the GLIAC commish, I would have tossed UMD a SOS bomb and had them facing Tiffin.

Re: 2010 DII Football

I would think it's more likely that you're going to have a hard time getting someone to agree to a home-and-home. Houghton isn't exactly a short and easy trip for anyone except Northern. I think we got the games with Winona State primarily because Coach Kearly is an alum.

Duluth isn't that far of a roadie for MTU, and there are a few other NSIC teams that are closer to Houghton than what they are to the rest of the GLIAC.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Another factor was that the GLIAC South this year was absolute crap. In a seven-team division, there was one great team (Hillsdale), one good team (Wayne, and Tech *****-slapped them around the field in the second half), one team that was average at best (Ashland) and four that were various varieties of gawdawful (Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican, Findlay and gulp, Tiffin.)

Also, I strongly believe that SVSU was probably better than they played this year. After all, that was a playoff team last year.

Re: 2010 DII Football

45-21 was the final. Must have been one heck of a halftime speach by the UMD coaching staff. :D

A good old fashion paintpeeler was probably in order, but a lot of that second half there was the Landcows own undoing. A lot of costly turnovers, a punt return, and a lot of stupid personal fouls when they could least afford to give them out.

UMD had Upper Iowa (2 wins), Northern State (2 wins), Crookston (0 wins), Mary (4 wins) and Moorehead (2 wins). Tiffin couldn't possibably do more SOS damage than any of those five; especially the Crookston, Northern, Moorehead trifecta.

Yeah, Saggy so should have won their game with California. They kept shooting themselves in the foot in that game. They also had the best SOS in the region as well, as they managed to miss Findlay, Tiffin and ODU this year, the worst of the worst of the South division.

Then again, if MTU had just beaten either Hillsdale or Saggy this year, they're prepping game tape for St. Cloud.

The punt return and subsequent 2-point conversion were huge for UMD. I believe Mankato also extended the next drive which made it 28-14 UMD.

Well, ideally there, I would have sent UMD to Tiffin, then given GVSU a roadie to Auggie, a GVSU win over Auggie would be a really nice matchup as far as SOS would be concerned. Basically, there's no sense in trying to have to rely on Tiffin to improve the SOS of the league as a whole, so it would be better to give em a game that we we're willing to surrender If the end result ends up being 9 GLIAC wins to 5 NSIC wins, then the GLIAC teams will have the better overall SOS come selection time.

And UMD counters by carpet bombing the GLIAC with three-quarters of the NSIC and then pulls an Auggie and schedules St. Cloud as a NC game. :D

Re: 2010 DII Football

I probably should post the brackets here.

Super Region 1

6. Bloomsburg (9-2) - 2. Mercyhurst (9-2) -
3. California (10-1) - - -
5. Shaw (9-2) - - -
4. Shepherd (9-1) - 1. Kutztown (10-1)

Bloomsburg goes to California(PA) next weekend, the winner there will then go to Erie, PA to have a rematch with Mercyhurst.
Shaw goes to Shepherd, winner goes to the surprize number one seed in the Northeast, Kutztown. Nobody had them even making the playoffs this year.

Super Region 2

6. North Alabama (8-3) - 2. Delta State (8-3) -
3. Valdosta State (8-2) - - -

5. Morehouse (8-2) - - -
4. Wingate (8-2) - 1. Albany State (10-0) -

North Alabama sneaks in, abit somewhat unexpectedly, to go to Valdosta this weekend, winner will then go to Mississippi to take on Delta State in what will be a de facto GSC championship game in the second round.
Morehouse goes to Wingate, winner goes to the SIAC champ Albany State.

Super Region 3

6. Colorado Mines (9-2) - 2. Augustana (10-1) -
3. Grand Valley (10-1) - - -
5. Hillsdale (9-2) - - -
4. St. Cloud (9-2) - 1. Minnesota-Duluth (11-0) -
From the looks of things, Michigan Tech became a victim of Earned Access, and got bumped out of the playoffs by Colorado Mines. However, one would have to wonder what Tech's chances would have been facing at home a GVSU squad that unquestionalbly be up for a rematch game with MTU. Mines with the long trip to Allendale from Colorado, winner of that game will then go to Sioux Falls, SD to take on Augustana.
Hillsdale goes to St. Cloud, winner gets the Bulldogs.

Super Region 4

6. Missouri Western (8-3) - 2. Texas A&M-Kingsville (10-1) -
3. Northwest Missouri (9-1) - - -
5. West Texas A&M (8-3) - - -
4. Central Missouri (9-2) - 1. Abilene Christian (11-0) -
Missouri Western travels to their haited rivals Northwest Missouri, the winner there then goes to southern North Mexico to take on Texas A&M Kingsville.
West Texas A&M goes to Central Missouri to face the Mules, winner of that game goes to Abilene, to take on the current holders of The Man Trophy, Abilene Christian.

Re: 2010 DII Football

No Tech in the playoff field. Will be curious to see if Colorado Mines, which got the six seed, actually passed Tech or if they got in via earned access, which would give us a nice little straw man to beat on in Houghton for a while.

Also, Kearly has said that it was the first time in over a decade that a two-loss GLIAC team failed to get in. Can someone better versed in the process than I explain why that is? Basically, more depth in the NSIC?

NCAA's final regional rankings

Yep, Tech got hosed because of Earned access. They pretty much didn't have a prayer because Nebraska Kearney was already ahead of Tech and would have been in as the 6 without needing to use Earned access. A decent non-con game somewhere else and MTU would have likely been ahead of Hillsdale. Or heck, swap out Ohio Dominican with Ashland even perhaps.

Hey Big, The RMAC, of which Colorado School of Mines is a member, announced its all-conference awards yesterday. I know your beloved GVSU team plays Mines this weekend. I don't follow Mines and cannot tell you a single thing about the current team. If you access the above link you can at least see the names of some of the players from Mines who received all-conference honors this season and familiarize yourself with a few names in advance of GVSU's game this weekend. Just thought you might like to have a little info on some of the players your team will play this weekend. Enjoy the game.

Colorado isn't quite the Engineering school I wanted to face this weekend. That Honor goes to a certtain Yooper school we all know and love, but Mines was able to bump them out of the playoffs via Earned Access, but it really didn't matter because if Mine's loss, then Nebraska-Kearney would have most likely have been the fourth seed in the region and hosting St. Cloud.

Everything we've seen and heard about Mines is that they're pretty pass happy. All long as we can get some pressure on their QB without giving up too many big plays, getting some stops, GVSU should be fine. Mine's D does have this one guy on their D-line who's looks like he's a real freak, but I do kinda wonder if he can play like that the whole game facing a double team from GVSU.

Re: 2010 DII Football

I'm willing to be a little bold - the loss to Tech will propel GV to another national championship. You heard it here first.

Honestly, I'm not sure I quite see GVSU making it all the way to Alabama this year. Mines is going to bit of a challenge, but we should be able to get past them. Then, to continue the march, its then a long trip to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to take on Auggie, and then most likely its a trip up to Duluth to take on the Bulldogs. Then for the Semi-finals, its either going to be in Texas or Missouri. Duluth would be our biggest challenge, as we would be coming off of the Auggie game, and then another trip, plus UMD pounds the rock a lot, with just enough passing to keep ya honest. GVSU's biggest weekness this year has been our D-Line, who has all be banged up this year, and we've been awfully thin there all year. Tech and Milbrath pretty much showed the way to beat GVSU this year. If GVSU makes it all the way this year, its going to be from the Offense winning shootouts.

Re: 2010 DII Football

If I read correctly, the SCSU student vote results will be announced tonight. Should be interesting to see what happens there.

I didn't realize you guys had been dealing with a lot of injuries.
