2010 DII Football

Re: 2010 DII Football

I think its a bit of a matter of who else Auggie hasn't played yet, and will miss. Auggie hasn't played Upper Iowa yet, which is the worst team in the South Divison of the NSIC. And they don't play Crookston either. UMD already has played the worse of the SOS Anchors, and have Crookston on the dance card this weekend. Also, Auggie played St. Cloud in a non-conference game, giving them another boost, while UMD played Central Washington. While CWU is a good program, they're a victim of their schedule that forces them to play round robin with their conference. Also, as far as the D2 committee is concerned, CWU is 5-2 while SCSU is 7-2, meaning that those losses for CWU hurt them more percentage wise.

I'll admittee, Auggie in the one spot doesn't quite pass the Smell test, but thats the way the system is right now. Wanna prove that you're the best, go on the road and do it. Its not like UMD hasn't won on the road before. 2008 they proved that.
So it sounds like if records are equal, strength of schedule is the determining factor? If so, the system could be a lot worse (see D1).

Re: 2010 DII Football

i'll look at it again tomorrow, but i think it had something about eligibility. I didn't recognize the school they are playing in the picture...helmet was green had a paw print(?) on it...had a mascot name on it too but don't remember it lol

***that may be my most usesless post to date
That could have been from the 2008 championship game against Northwest Missouri State. Thats the only team in UMD's recent history that would fit that description. Only team that uses Green in the NSIC is Bemidji, but they have the Beaver logo on their lids. Wayne State (NE) does have a paw on theirs, but they're black and yellow.

So it sounds like if records are equal, strength of schedule is the determining factor? If so, the system could be a lot worse (see D1).

Yeah, its not quite perfect, and well, there could always be a few tweaks to any system, like for D2, like Tuskegee in the regional rankings but with an asterisk, but other than that, we quite often can all say we settle it out on the field.

Re: 2010 DII Football

There are some pics from the NWMS championship game that the NCAA is using. When we were down at the College World Series this past spring we saw one that had a pic of UMD vs the Bearcats on it, made me do a huge double take!!

Re: 2010 DII Football

Games this weekend...... All times EDT.

Noon

Clarion @
Mercyhurst (20)
- Ummm... Holy Shibby!!! Mercyhurst is ranked??? Does.... Not.... Compute....
Number 20 in the D2Football.com poll, and currently 3rd in the region. Mercyhurst might not just make the playoffs, but host a playoff game.

Saint Anselm @
New Haven
- New Haven pretty much has the NE-10 title in the bag. Even if St. A beats em Saturday, they'll still be co-champs and would still have head to head wins over the other 2-loss conference teams as well, with Assumption, with 3 losses, behind them. And since they don't have a game next weekend, they will be getting a bye as well, even though they're likely to be traveling.

Assumption @
Stonehill
- Assumption started out great, but just lost steam and collected 3 losses so far. Still, they'll finish above .500 on the year, its something to build on.

Indianapolis @
Wayne State (Mich.) (24)
- Wayne State is 10th in whats thought to be a very tight race in the region. Wayne, simply put, needs to win, and hope for some help. A win against Indy should put em at ninth over Winona, who's playing a SOS anchor. And WSU wouldn't mind seeing 2 of these three teams, Michigan Tech, Hillsdale, and St. Cloud take a loss. Nebraska-Kearney plays Colorado Mines the weekend after this one and that would give WSU another team they can jump.

1 pm.

Pace @
American International
- Pace is the worst team in the NE-10, so AIC will get to .500 on the season.

Kutztown (15) @
Bloomsburg (14)
- No hockey schools here, but non the less, a big matchup here for the playoffs. With a win, Kutztown could very well become the one seed in the region. Bloomsburg, the lowest PSAC team with a prayer of sneaking into the playoffs here needs a win because they're the first team to get bumped if Earned Assess is used.

Southern Connecticut @
Merrimack
- Best Merrimack can do this year is finish at .500, but a big order with the Owls coming to town.

Saginaw Valley @
Northern Michigan
- Hell, I'm just going to be honest. I just wanna see NMU thump Saggy good. ;)

2 pm.

Michigan Tech @
Ferris State
- Ferris needs this road win if they wanna stay in the playoff hunt. They would be in a lot better shape right now if they let the game with Saggy get away from them. That would have likely have them at the third seed and hosting a game. Still, they're in better shape than a lot of the other contenders.

Minnesota-Duluth (1) @
Minnesota-Crookston
- This game does Duluth no favors in getting past Auggie for the one seed. Honestly, Duluth would be better off having somebody sneak onto Crookston's field late Friday night, and have somebody cut down the goal posts, so they can't play the game. Cancelled games don't go on the records. ;)

Missouri Western @
Nebraska-Omaha
- Lucky for them, the MIAA has 2 post season bowl deals, so odds are the winner of this game should get to go to one of them.

Bemidji State @
St. Cloud (22)
- Speaking of bowl bids, this one does have Bowling on the line as well. Winner of this game gets first dibs on the Mineral Water Bowl, unless they somehow make the playoffs. Needless to say, there's a lot of GLIAC fans pulling for the Beavers this weekend.

3 pm.

Simon Fraser @
Central Washington
- eh, well, I don't think they're playoff eligible yet anyways. I do think they might also have some contingency plan if they did ever get to host a game, they would likely have to host it over the boarder in Blaine perhaps.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Tech beats Ferris 28-16. Now, on to a pivotal Miner's Cup, with Tech playing for a possible NCAA bid and a certain teacher's college to the east (;)) with nothing to lose.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Duluth should be embarrassed only winning by 48 against UMC. They should be up by that much at the half.

I'm curious as to why SFU couldn't host a playoff game.

Mostly because of the logistics of getting passports for oh roughly a hundred or so players, coaches, and other assorted staff members with less than a week to do it. I would think a lot of coaches would likely object to playing a game where half of his team can't even get into the country. Given that SFU would be in the USA a lot, it wound be far easier for them to use a stadium that is stateside to host.

Fair enough. Lynden WA has a very nice 10000 seat stadium, which would seat about 9000 more people than SFU normally gets for a game :)

They were (okay, it was only 42-rip, but whatever). Maybe their second/third stringers should all be cut. Only beating UMC 13-7 in the second half? Completely unacceptable...

Re: 2010 DII Football

You can probably leap them (Auggie) if you win this weekend.
It will be close, but Saggy has one hell of an SOS right now, and Upper Iowa, not so much for Auggie. It puts us a lot closer as far as SOS is concerned.
If Tech beats NMU, is that enough to bump Hillsdale or St. Cloud?

Not likely if all teams win out. Hillsdale has the Head to Head over Tech, and if Hillsdale and Tech are next to each other in the regional rankings, then Hillsdale is automatically above Tech. Whats really killing Tech right now is that loss to Saginaw Valley, those **** birds. Right now, in addition to beating eNeMa U, MTU needs either MSU Moorhead to knock off St. Cloud or Tiffin to shock Hillsdale this weekend. Given as much as I've bad mouthed Tiffin on here, I'm pretty sure you've got a good idea of which one is a little more likely to happen, and offer up your offerings to the Football Gods accordingly. Kearney losing doesn't really help you out much either, as they have Colorado Mines this weekend, and as far as we can tell, the winner of that matchup is in the playoffs for the RMAC. Mines might be using Earned access to be in, but thats about what the Math looks to me from here.

Re: 2010 DII Football

The NCAA OWP stat sheet

Nobody else has been smart enough to figure out how to do a prediction generator to let you calculate everybody's SOS by seeing what happens if X beats Y in Z conference. and given that you would really only have a week to do it right now, probably not going to happen. But you can use that there to sort around with what are probably your best guesses as what will happen with SOS. Remember, SOS-Strength of Schedule is calculated as 2/3 of OWP(Opponents Win Percentage) + 1/3 of OOPW(Opponents Opponent Win Percentage.)

One minor note, this spreadsheet dosen't have Mercyhurst facing Bloomsburg in the PSAC championship game. Minor error there.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Games from last weekend....

Clarion 14
Mercyhurst (20) 38
- This win is going to be up there in MC Football lore. This win here put Mercyhurst in the PSAC title game, and I believe it's the west division's turn to host it, meaning that Bloomsburg is going to Erie this Saturday. Get there early if you're going to it.

Saint Anselm 35
New Haven 26
- There's a few teams out there in the PSAC, and WVIAC that really owe Saint A a few beers. Their win over New Haven knocked them out of the playoff hunt, and open up another spot for those other squads. Just goes to show you why they play the game.

Assumption 0
Stonehill 18
- Assumption started out well this year, but just looks like the wheels fell off for em.

Indianapolis 27
Wayne State (Mich.) (24) 41
- Wayne State keeping their very faint playoff hopes alive here. If only they hadn't had that bad last quarter against Ashland.

Pace 31
American International 69
- Eh, big deal, so you Sixty-nined Pace, they've packed it in this year.

Southern Connecticut 49
Merrimack 32
- If anybody had a solid D in the NE-10 this year, I think they would have make the playoffs.

Saginaw Valley 24
Northern Michigan 17
- A tough home loss for the Wildcats. Losing their QB this year really hurt the Wildcat offense.

Michigan Tech 28
Ferris State 16
- Much like Wayne State, Tech is on the outside looking in right now for the playoffs, but they're at least ahead of the line when it comes to being the next ones in if somebody ahead of them loses.

Southwest Minnesota 7
Minnesota State 53
- A good thrashing here...

Minnesota-Duluth (1) 55
Minnesota-Crookston 7
- Surprized that the score wasn't bigger here, but I'm guessing Nelson wanted to make sure his 1's and 2's are well rested before the playoffs start. He's already down his all-star running back. He doesn't need another one of his Ballers to get hurt.

Missouri Western 16
Nebraska-Omaha 14
- Bherns at UNO has got to be feeling his seat getting hot after this season. Wouldn't really surprize me at all to see him gone after this year perhaps.

Bemidji State 14
St. Cloud (22) 35
- St. Cloud keeps themselves on the inside of the playoffs right now, win this week and they're in.

Augustana (9) 14
Wayne State (Neb.) 26
- Not a Hockey school, but I'm throwing this up here because UMD owes Wayne State (NE) a few beers for giving them homefield thru the playoffs.

Simon Fraser 7
Central Washington 34
- Looks like SFU won't win in the states this year.
