2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

"the first ballot is sacred?"

Kill yourself, Marriotti. They're either HoF-worthy or they're not. Don't be an *******.

I can accept his argument for adding a level of importance to first ballot hall of famers, I don't agree with it but I don't think its wrong for some to feel that way...I'm pro-choice FBHoF ;)

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Andres Galarraga 22 4.1%
Robin Ventura 7 1.3%
Ellis Burks 2 0.4%
Eric Karros 2 0.4%
Kevein Appier 1 0.2%
Pat Hentgen 1 0.2%
David Segui 1 0.2%

Here is something else...these guys actually got votes...what the hell?

This is not unusual. A hometown writer will, from time to time, give a local guy a vote, knowing full well that he's going to be under the 5% threshold to keep him on the ballot. The writers get to vote for up to 10 players, and I would guess that most of them don't vote for half that amount. It's not like these votes are taking away from someone else.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

We can blindfold him and give him one of Leyland's cigarettes. How's that?

The others were solid major league players. David Segui's mom must be a baseball writer.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

You know...maybe its me, but I just don't think the crime of a writer not voting for your preferred Hall of Fame candidate is worthy of capital punishment. :D

Methinks some of you people need to chill out a weeee bit and maybe focus your energies elsewhere???;)

I don't care who Mariotti voted for. I just want to see him get hit by a bus.

Galarraga getting votes doesn't surprise me that much. I gave him an outside chance at reaching 5% to be on the ballot next year.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

 So now you're saying we should go by eyewitness accounts when evaluating players, even though you said repeatedly that you can get everything you need from stats. Seems like you should be having the debate with yourself.
Umm, is the distinction between evaluating players to predict future performance and evaluating players' past performance too complicated for you? I don't see how it can be.
2011 First-time eligibles (guys with a case to get in bolded):
Wilson Alvarez
Carlos Baerga
Jeff Bagwell
Bret Boone
Kevin Brown
Cal Eldred
John Franco
Juan Gonzalez
Marquis Grissom
Bobby Higginson
Charles Johnson
Al Leiter
Tino Martinez
Raul Mondesi
Jose Offerman
John Olerud
Rafael Palmeiro
Paul Quantrill
Steve Reed
Kirk Rueter
Rey Sanchez
Benito Santiago
B.J. Surhoff
Ugueth Urbina
Ismael Valdez
Larry Walker
Dan Wilson
Carlos "One if by land, two if by sea, three if" Baerga definitely goes in the Bermanism Hall of Fame. And while he won't get enough credit for it (for the same reasons that Keith Hernandez didn't get enough credit for it), John Olerud was a great ballplayer.
Awesome logic here. "Because other people didn't vote for them before, I won't do it now." Not, I didn't find their careers HoF-worthy. That.

Tell me Jay, if a group of people are not not jumping off a bridge, will you follow them too?
"Are you drunk?"
"I'm not NOT drunk."

Ummm....I covered that in the rest of the post which you conveniently left out, but nice try anyway. Try to console yourself with the thought that the guy I believed belonged made it (Dawson), while the guy Nerd Nation thought should make it didn't (Blyleven). :D :D :D

The difference between the guy who you think belonged and the guy who just missed out was 20 votes.

You're a nerd too, just a stupid one who uses stats that were invented before television.

I'd rather be a smart nerd than a stupid one like you.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

I'm just glad Mariotti isn't permitted to weigh in on issues of national importance like health care reform or national defense.

Could you imagine his defense of his voting record in Congress?

Mariotti: "Yeah, that bill got voted down before, so I really couldn't vote for it now."

Reporter: "Congressman, that bill was to authorize millions for humanitarian aid for storm relief."

Mariotti: "Oh. I thought it was for the perverted arts or something."
