2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Maybe baseball players should vote on who gets to vote for the Hall of Fame.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Okay....now all at once, please post a 20 page manifesto, complete with every stat under the sun, telling us why Blyleven belongs in the Hall. You know you're dying to. :D  :D

Really happy for Dawson. It took far longer than it should, but its nice he's not penalized for playing in the obscurity of Montreal during most of his prime. Not sure what more you want out of a top hitter and top fielder for a decade plus.

Surprised at Alomar. Sure he'll get in next time but I wonder if it has anything to do with his personality??? Either way, I would have thought he was a sure fire inductee.

Blyleven will get the sympathy vote in the next couple of years to put him over the top, but he really had better control the whining this year about not getting in.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Here's what Marriotti said:

I didn't vote for anybody in the baseball hall of fame this year. Ya know why? To me...the first ballot is sacred. I think Roberto Alomar is an eventual Hall of Famer, not the first time. Edgar Martinez, designated hitter, eventually, but not the first time. Same goes for maybe Fred McGriff. As far as Blyleven and Dawson...if they haven't gotten in for years and years I cannot vote them in now. Ripken, Rickey Henderson and Gwynn. They are true first ballot Hall of Famers, but I didn't vote for anybody, throw me out of the Baseball Writers. I don't care.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

I'll bet anyone here a steak dinner that both Alomar and Blyleven go in next year.

As for Mariotti, I have about as much use for him as I do for Ken Harrelson behind a mic.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

I'd rather he shows his face around Ozzie Guillen and Guillen takes care of the issue himself.

Awesome logic here. "Because other people didn't vote for them before, I won't do it now." Not, I didn't find their careers HoF-worthy. That.

Tell me Jay, if a group of people are not not jumping off a bridge, will you follow them too?

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

"the first ballot is sacred?"

Kill yourself, Marriotti. They're either HoF-worthy or they're not. Don't be an *******.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Kevin Brown was amazing.
For a shorter period of time than many. That's what makes the voting as much art as science -- it isn't just about reaching a certain threshold, but maintaining it for a certain amount of time. Koufax gets in by being purely dominant, although for a brief period. Puckett gets in ... I guess because a lot of people liked him? Each case seems to be different, and different for different people.

Peter Gammons on MLB Network just mentioned his ballot this year: Alomar, Blyleven, Dawson, Larkin, Raines, Trammell, McGwire.

No arguments here with that group.
Long term, it will be interesting to see what the Hall does with players like McGwire and Palmiero.

To me...the first ballot is sacred. I think Roberto Alomar is an eventual Hall of Famer, not the first time. Edgar Martinez, designated hitter, eventually, but not the first time. There may be a proof by induction to show that this thinking is idiotic.;)

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Andres Galarraga 22 4.1%
Robin Ventura 7 1.3%
Ellis Burks 2 0.4%
Eric Karros 2 0.4%
