2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Wow, that's way earlier than (I think) we all thought he started using.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

I remember the Canseco rumors, as he had gotten huge really quickly right before he reached the pros. Hadn't heard McGwire until later than that IIRC. Basically his whole career except for the ROTY season/49 HR's in 1987 is a fraud.

His muscle growth from his rookie season through the A's back to back to back AL title runs was impressive enough that a few Bay Area reporters and some fanbase word of mouth were questioning whether it was being done legally. Of course this was before the internet, steroids as a national issue, and there was no smoking gun, so as far as I know the rumors stayed local and no investigation was ever launched.

McGwire owns up to 'roids:

He'd been using since 89-90. Yikes. That pretty much encompasses his whole career (rookie in '87 I believe). Kudos for coming clean, but kiss the Hall goodbye.

By coming clean he hopes to give his candidacy a boost. Otherwise, the 15 years would have passed and he'd still be getting 23% of the vote. He's gambling that by coming clean now, he has a better shot (pardon the pun) at election. Now the writers have to decide: ignore steroids completely or let users into the Hall if they admit it. It would be hypocritical of the writers to elect Manny and A-Rod but pass on McGwire, Bonds and Sosa.

I remember hearing about Canseco up here in Twins Territory, but nothing on McGwire...

Canseco's allegations may have carried further because he always came off as an ***hole, even in 1989. McGuire grew into that roll as the years went by, but was at first portrayed as a clean, all American kid just trying to play the game the right way.

I agree that he's got nothing to lose, but he's screwed IMHO. His entire career is tainted save for the first two years. A-Rod is going to argue that he only did it for 3 years, and even if you wipe those out he'd still make it. Manny on the other hand I hope gets left out, because if he failed tests in 03 and 09 we can assume he juiced all along, and therefore half his career is tainted.

Bonds I think depends on the results of his trial. If he's convicted I think its going to be hard to let him. I would have thought he could use the A-Rod argument, but maybe he was juicing earlier than we all thought too.

McGwire is live on the MLB Network with Bob Costas. Has he always had those weird marks on his neck?

there was a funny story from when he was still with the A's.

one afternoon at fenway a guy and his son went to the game, and ended up locking the keys in the car. they decided to go into the game and deal with trying to open it up afterwards. well during the game mac skied one over the net (still a net then ;) ) and across landsdowne street into the parking garage bldg and -yup- through the window on the locked car. the dad and son found out about it afterwards and shank shaughnessy got word of it while they were still in the neighborhood. shank took the ball off them and went into the clubhouse to try and get mac to sign it. mac saw him coming as he was eating at his locker off the spread, lifted his hand, and said, "wait until i'm done eating." shank, as only he can, stuck out the ball and started blabing out the story. mac looked up and listened. when shank was done mac said something like, "that's cool." and took the ball from him and signed it for the kid.

After watching the interview on MLB Network, I can safely say that he just doesn't get it. No way he should get in the Hall.

I wonder if he was lying to Ted Williams at the '99 All-Star game.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

I can almost guarantee you he gets more than 23 percent next year. Not 75 percent, but I bet it's closer to 50.

As far as I'm concerned, too little, too late.
