2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

They had the same problems lots of teams have had this year, stopping our top line. Andy's 2nd goal Dion had 2 defenders on him that couldn't keep up and he got the pass off. How many times have we seen that though.
Your goalie was left out to dry by his D last night.
Nope. Team back-checking was the problem.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Classless, just like whoever butchered the polar bear in our logo whenever we scored or showed one of our players that had a bloodied polar bear on the A when I watched the GCI broadcast...

Since I was at the game, I can't comment on anything that was shown on the webcast. I saw the signs that the UAA students had, and didn't see anything like this. The worst I saw was "Puck the Nanooks".

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Or the classlessness of the person who yelled "***** THE NOOKS" at the NW entrance...

Or the Seawolf fans that got escorted out after trying to start stuff with the Nanook students

Didn't see or hear that either, but if it is the case, I agree it is classless, and unacceptable behavior. Similar things have happened at the Carlson Center from UA_ fans as well.

I did see some commotion near the UA_ fans, and wondered what was going on, but they were being very obnoxious. They were warned more than once not to pound on and push the glass, yet they kept doing it. Sullivan Arena staff had every right to kick them out, but they didn't. I did see Nanook fans making their way over to the UAA student section and messing with them.

Edit: Just talked with a friend who was there last night (so was I but I didn't see everything) and here is what happened. Some UAA fans over to stand behind the UA_ fans, and they waved the UAA flag in their faces. Security came over and told them to stop. Nanook fans then shook the UAA fans hands and were good sports about it. Then the Nanook fans went over to the UAA student section and started messing with their cheering, the UAA fans kinda hemmed them in, but again, nothing came of it.

Suze your right. I was there when the UAA fans were taunting the UAF fans but it was all in good fun, and everyone was smiles. It was honestly refreshing to see. I talked to the security guys and they were enjoying it too, but were worried that something could go wrong and the flag waving was blocking a lot of peoples views.

The sullivan rink maintenance dudes were ****ed when the "carlson crazies" started pushing on the glass at the beginning of the game. When it resonates back and forth that can be very destructive to the structure. I think someone talked to them after that and while they hit the glass and it moved, they didn't resonate it.

Both schools have fans they aren't proud of, but I didn't hear anything inappropriate while in anchorage.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Time to update my signature. For posterity's sake, I set it last year and it currently says:

On saturday, February 27th 2010, the Alaska Nanooks will take back the Governor's Cup from the seapuppies of Anchorage.

In doing so, they will become the first team to capture all three alaska tournament trophies in one season.

I'm going to open up a psychic hotline next year.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

UAA should be very ashamed and embarassed with the actions of Shyiak tonight..what he did was unacceptable..

I tend to agree with you, GASP. However, I understand why he did what he did. This is not me blaming the refs right now. Bruce and Eric BOTH said that there should have been a penalty shot awarded on the Clark take down (it was more blatant that the one last night that gave the nanooks a penalty shot).

Then when Grant was hauled down on a breakaway scoring chance, not only was there no penalty shot, there was NO penalty. Again, Bruce and Eric said that was a horrible non call. Those refs should be suspended.

However, what Shyiak did could very easily have cost his team the game, and I do not condone it.

Good luck in the playoffs nanooks.

Im sorry to say I agree. Throwing objects onto the ice in protest and getting ejected pointlessly won't help his standing in the eyes of Seawolf fans. From what I understand he may have been protesting a call that wasn't made, and a valid one at that. I wasn't paying enough attention and reviewed footage yet. Sometimes coaches get heated and go nuts, and honestly I think it's pretty entertaining.... but

I think it sets a bad example for his players. I know one of uaa's biggest problems is penalties and today it seems like the coach proved where that lack of control comes from.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

I'm going to get neg-repped to holy hell by my fellow UAA fans for this, but it needs to be said...

Shyiak needs to resign or get fired by Monday.

I used to love the guy because he was fiery as hell, but tossing a water bottle onto the ice during play, then promptly following that up by jumping the bench and getting into the face of a ref was easilly the most boneheadedly-stupid thing ever.

I don't care if it was MacInchak, who's easily one of the worst refs in the CCHA, that crap is what I'd expect out of some bush-leaguer, or from an ECHL-level coach.

I guess I'm moreso ticked because the action directly led to UAF's put-away goal. It was friggin' 2-1 with a boatload of time left in the third. Congrats on not only losing the game, but the friggin' Governor's Cup. Hope you got your rocks off from that, Dave.

I'm steaming right now. I can't stand the further eroded in-state recruiting, nor any of Shyiak's pet-project goaltenders that never pan out (though I will admit, Olthuis played pretty well tonight). That, and the tirades, which at first were a fun novelty, are now purely taxing at best.

No more. I've supported the Seawolves since childhood. I can't now.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Shyiak certainly had a right to be angry about a couple calls or noncalls when UAA players were hauled down on breakaways, but I would think some sort of suspension might be in order for his reaction.

While I think there are probably many other fans who will agree with you, it aint gonna happen.

He's not the first WCHA ref to do so, and he won't be the last. Gwoz has done it twice.

Gotta agree with that. I have been upset for a couple of years now that he can't instill some dicipline in his team. It can be done. I didn't like Talafous, but he did take a team that had the most penalty minutes in the league (under Brush) to the least penalized team in ONE season.

Actually, UAA has two elite local players coming in next season. The goalie situation is not all his fault. Matt Gordon was an excellent goalie, who had a detached retina in his second or third game and was done. That left the team in a bad spot. I do think that Bryce had earned the #1 spot last year and never was given it. This year, the goalies are equally poor and inconsistent.

I may not like what the school does, or what the coaches do, or other politics that go on, but I will support this team for the PLAYERS. You can quit on them if you want, it won't be a big loss.

I'm sure something will happen. Last year Gwoz was kicked out of a game for reaming over a ref, and he walked across the ice to the penalty box (the locker room was behind the bench). He stood there talking to the linesman for quite some time until they escorted him off the ice. He got a one game suspension for that.

Are the CCHA refs always that terrible? They should be suspended themselves. I know the WCHA has suspended refs for less than that.

Steve Piotrowski's an idiot who only hires other idiots. Shegos, Aaron, MacInchak, Brown... they're all pretty terrible.

Ok I'll be the one to defend him.

What he did is called showing passion for his team and defending his team against what seemed to be circus-like officiating. Multiple times people, Suze especially (and yes I am singling you out), have said that Dave never showed enough passion in the past when the refs seem to make horrible calls. Now, when he actually does it, you guys want him fired! WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot do you want from him?!? He was caring for his team, showing passion for them, the same exact thing that you people say you do for the players. That's part of his job, that what's coaches do in situations like that, hoping his players respond. If a UAF player had cheap shotted some player and Kevin Clark or Nick Haddad had fought the guy and gotten a 5 and Game DQ would you want them kicked off the team and out of school? No! Well that's akin to what the referee was doing to Shyiak and so he fought back. Is he going to be punished? Yes. Should he be suspended? Yes. Should he be fined? Yes. Should he be fired? No. He's not the first coach do that (and IceAngel I'm willing to bet money that a UAF coach has done something like that before), he won't be the last.

And I dispute that his penalty led directly to the goal, did it help? No. But remember that UAA was killing off a 5 minute major at that time anyway. And with the way UAF's PP had been, that probably would have been a goal anyway.

Actually Steve Piotrowski, in my experience from when he reffed the Governor's Cup a few years ago, is not an idiot. Darn good referee in my mind. Knew what the stakes were and kept out of the way on both sides but was there when he had to be. Now all other CCHA referees...

I only remember one, which I believe was Tavis who broke a stick over the bench but it was after a period ended not during the middle of the game. And it wasn't directly toward the ref, it was just cause he was ****ed.
