2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Again, give me a buzz when Cobb signs a new coach that isn't a moron... or, at least, one that doesn't deliberately lose his team the game because of incredibly stupid and poorly-timed tirades.

Shyiak's the primary reason as to why we lost the cup last night. Don't be mad at me because I've found enlightenment.

The TEAM follows the coach! Shown by Clark standing at center ice throwing a tantrum and banging his stick till it broke in front of the refs at the end of the game.

 I guess you never followed Clark's junior career, or you wouldn't say that. He has actually cleaned it up a LOT under Shyiak. You should have seen his freshman year.

One mistake is no reason to be calling for a coaches head. Brush's teams had the most penalty minutes in the WCHA as well, but nobody worried about it back then.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Thoughts:
*Shyiak is a good coach, he lost his temper, and acted in a manner in which I'm sure he regrets now. He knows it was stupid, and I'm sure he is glad no one got hurt. He blew his temper, but this one incident isn't a reason to be calling for his head. It’s hard to be excited about a community that isn’t excited about you or the team, maybe if they had better support he would be more personable!
*The refs weren't great either game, but I thought they did a decent job. I am tired about hearing how the refs blew everything. They have a tough job. They made some bad calls, and missed some calls both nights. WCHA refs are no better than CCHA refs. I've read a number of blogs and articles the last few years, and there have been a TON of complaints about WCHA refs. Like I said it's a tough job that none of us would want to do. There should have been, at a minimum, a penalty on UAF for hauling down Grant. On the flip side Klausen was called for a knee on knee hit that never happened, and Sather was called for a cross check by hitting a uaa player with one hand (stick was in that hand). It was not a cross check. Those were both blown calls. It happens, and will continue to happen. The refs are only human.
*It makes me laugh a little to see this in fighting among uaa fans.
The better team won both nights. The Nooks out played, out battled, out hustled, out coached, and out everything the wolves. I think uaa looked better on Friday than they did on Saturday.
*Our top line is unreal, what did they have like 15 points in two games? They were poetry in motion.
*Kane Lafranchise is a very good blue liner. He showed up to play both nights. I was very impressed with him. What year is he? He has wheels, and really moves the puck well. Good shot as well.
*I was surprised Kaare Odegaard was out Saturday, I thought he was our best blue liner on Friday. He is coming along very nicely.
*The GCI feed on Friday was horrible. Talk about horrible camera work. Most the time the camera wasn’t even on the player with the puck.
*The Sully looked empty on TV. It is bigger than the CC so it was ard to tell. I had a friend that went to the game, and he said it was very "spotty." The CC was packed and loud. Fairbanks fans care about our team.
*I thought Greenham was decent, he wasn’t spectacular, but he got the job done. Uaa’s goalie on Saturday looked pretty good to me. He didn’t give up any soft goals like people said he would.
*Where is Alaska Hockey and his big mouth?:D

Why would I have followed his JUNIOR career. Should I be watching which mite is running around and knocking everyone down so I know who the next UAa players will be?:p
And it sounds more like it is the straw that broke the camels back than one mistake.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

The Sully looked empty on TV? LOL There were 4600 fans there, only portions of the balcony were empty, not sure why it would look empty on TV.

According to Bruce, the CC was not sold out either.

I have watched UAA's broadcast all season long, it was head and shoulders above what UA_ managed to do.

Because you had 1844 empty seats and we had 86. 4362 fri to 4459 sat. On tv it looks like just a few people sit in the rows by the glass and so you see lots of yellow seats.
The only thing really bad about the UAa broadcast looked like the white level on their cameras were to high so every thing was a little washed out, couldn't read any ice logos and that 1970's pong thing when a goal a scored, I'm at a loss off words for that.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Suze tge B2 sucks, but the Fox 7 broadcasts are good. You need to watch Fridays game on GCI. If you really think that broadcast is good, then you have issues. Also, while watching that broadcast, tell me why there are so many yellow seats on the glass. Like I said I wasnt there, just looked bad on tv. You are really reaching when you start to say we didnt sell out either. We were 85 fans short, you guys were almost 2000 short. You wish uaa had crowds and support like UAF has.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

I was surprised when the game began and the stands looked very empty. They filled up rapidly during the 1st period, though, and by the end of the game they looked well filled.

the "washed out" look comes from GCI. They use what are called vbricks that digitize video and transport it between fairbanks and anchorage. Looking at saturdays rebroadcast I could see obvious signs of bitrate starvation such as macroblocking and noise on contrasting edges. It was also VERY soft, so soft that I think the bricks may have been set to half-resoution. I think GCI needs to increase the bitrate on their encoders to handle the high motion of hockey. I'll bother them next season about it. It might also be that they are using one vbrick to encode for TV & internet, and internet would be the lowest common denominator and so TV quality suffers due to the need to keep bandwidth usage to a minimum.

Um, yeah, that's exactly what I was going to say the problem was;)

Yeah, I figured, I almost didn't bother sharing. :D My knowledge of digital video is very basic.

The biggest fault of the weekend goes to the carlson crew for screwing up the senior sendoff videos. They were filled with interference and noise. Video production 101: if you don't see it get imported, check it after the fact to make sure its ok!

Wow I actually knew what you were talking about. :) Granted having a father in the TV industry will do that..

...and once again a peaceful calm settles over the land. The Nooks have an opportunity to elevate the program a little, but need to take it one game at a time. Time to move on.

Go Nooks!

Obviously I didn't see the Friday broadcast, since I was at the game. But I have seen all the other away games this season, and they weren't like what you describe at all.

Got this in my email late last night:

AD issues statement on incident
Courtesy: UAA Sports Information
Release: 02/28/2010

Courtesy: Michael Dinneen / UAA Athletics

Hockey head coach Dave Shyiak

Statement from Dr. Steve Cobb, UAA Director of Athletics - Feb. 28, 2010

"On behalf of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, I sincerely apologize to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, game officials and to UAA supporters for Coach Dave Shyiak's behavior on Saturday night that resulted in a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct and 10-minute game misconduct penalty.

Coach Shyiak's actions were out of character and regrettable. At UAA we have high behavioral standards, not just for student-athletes, but for all department employees. He has received a formal reprimand for his actions and understands that his behavior was unacceptable.

Respect for our opponents and officials is a core value of UAA's athletic program and will remain so in the future. We expect our coaches to model the highest degree of sportsmanship."

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Honestly I hope the WCHA leaves him alone. It was a non-conference, and intense, rivalry game. He got thrown out and publicly reprimanded by his employer. Let it go.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

I sort of agree. If he had done everything he did but throw an object on the ice, I would same done deal. When he threw that bottle, there were players and an offical coming up ice. That action alone should cost him a game. If that bottle would have a hurt some one, he would have been fired. Coah Shyiak is lucky.

He was still representing the WCHA right? I don't think they can leave it alone
