2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

I can't speak for the crowds at UA_ (although I have seen them looking sparce), but last year the Sully was pretty full for the game between these two teams, and there is NO way the nanook fans were louder ... they had NOTHING to cheer for, the nanooks scored zero goals. You dream on. :D

Then explain why, when I tuned in the radio broadcast last year, why one could distinctly hear "what's a seawolf, clap, clap, clap clap clap" over and over again over your radio announcers voice.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

And now we wait to see what the Seawolf fans start blaming their loss on. Will it be: the refs, the coaching, the weather, the concessionaires, the guy in the red sweater in the balcony...whatever they come up with shall be interesting.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Well that's a nice way to bounce back from a winless stretch :D

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

When we went down 0-2 in the first, I felt sick to stomach. When we went up 3-2 a few minutes later I yelled harder than I have in my life. I'll probably wake up with a sore throat tomorrow, but Jimmy cracked corn and I don't care.

And a big shout out to the Carlson Crazies that came south for tonight.

Can't wait for tomorrow. But be ready, because you know the Seawolves will come out swinging after getting dominated at home.

Because last year there was a large group right behind Kurt Haider, and one of them had some kind of a voice magnifier.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

I will blame that loss on Bryce Christiansen. 7 goals on 19 shots is absolutely *ing horrible. 63% save percentage is not good enough for a beer league let alone D1 hockey.

All this talk about "Why isn't Bryce playing?" "He should put in Bryce!" etc. That's why he wasn't playing. Rusty or not that game was his chance and he blew it big time. I don't want to hear or see a * thing about Bryce for a long time. I hope we have a real nice goalie coming in next year or else we're screwed.

As for tomorrow, they've played well before on Saturdays and on the road but they've got a major task. I've had my doubts about this all year and I still have them.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Bad thing for UAA is they played a pretty good game. Tommy Grant made a crazy shot and Clarks second goal on the PP was great, but overall UAF has more talent, is faster and has better goaltending. The better team won tonight, tomorrow could be different.

The numbers look awful, but Bryce wasn't that bad IMO. The softest goal he gave up was probably the penalty shot (he moved to take away a shot Brandon Knelsen didn't even fake to). Bryce didn't come up with any big saves, but UAF's 19 shots were almost all high quality chances as the Knelsen, Taranto, Sather line was simply walking around the defense all night long.

I didn't think Greenham looked any better than Bryce, in fact I think he should have stopped a couple of the goals he gave up. UAA had at least an equal number of scoring chances, but put a few shots wide and rang a crossbar.

I expect both teams to tighten up in the defensive zone tonight and the goaltending to be sharper. UAF 3-1 with an EN is my prediction.

The Nooks have not won anything yet. The Seawolves always seem to play better with their backs against the wall. And they better feed off hostel crowds, because I would expect (and hope) that Saturday nights Carlson crowd to be a wee bit noisy.

Go Nooks!

Problem is JJ, that Jonnie is no better. His save percentage is 66%. Our goalies are the biggest problem this season. Neither is DI caliber right now.

Having said that, they both struggled last season as well, but Bryce was given the reigns and played above 90% for the second half and into the playoffs. He established himself as the better goalie again this year, and clearly handles the puck much better than Olthuis. Something happened to get him benched, and for that he has to take responsibility.

As for the score, UAA beat the number one team in the nation 7-3. It happens to good teams too.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

Personally I think the problem is the defense. Bryce made decent saves, but he had little to no support when he needed it. Too many second chances, and UAF just had too many quality shots because the defense was cut up like swiss cheese around the board (not consistently, but too frequently).

I made a comment to my friend last night after our 5th goal that, after looking at the S.O.G. stat, I was amazed that Bryce was still in the game. At the time it was 5 goals allowed on 13 shots. I would be very surprised to see him back in net tonight; I think it would be difficult for Shyiak to justify sending him back out there after giving up 7 the night before. And for what it's worth, I don't think Greenham was 100% on his game last night either, although he did have two or three fantastic saves.

Considering UAA's Jekyll-and-Hyde weekends this year, I expect a completely different Seawolf team tonight in Fairbanks, and look for Andy Taranto to have a giant bulls eye on his back.

Dont worry, JJ is just mad that this girlfriend still slept with Bryce last night instead of him.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

They had the same problems lots of teams have had this year, stopping our top line. Andy's 2nd goal Dion had 2 defenders on him that couldn't keep up and he got the pass off. How many times have we seen that though.
Your goalie was left out to dry by his D last night.

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

I posted this in our season thread also:
Tonight will be much tighter I'm sure. Not going to post too much until after the series is over. I hope the CC is packed tonight. That place can be loud! One person who stood out to me last night (besides our top line) was Kaare Odegaard. He is really starting to turn into a nice defenseman. Uaa has some really nice players, obviously Clark is fantastic. I also really like Grant (said that last year), and Lafranchise. That D-man has some speed, and really moves the puck well. I was actually thinking, if you took UA's top line, Uaa's top line, mixed in a little of everyone else, and a couple D men off each team, you have a national championship contender! LOL! Good luck to everyone tonight......should be a good one!

Re: 2010 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup: The 'Banks vs. The 'Rage

I was impressed with the fans that made the trip from _airbanks. They weren't necessarily louder than the UAA fans (it was nice to see the student section FULL for a change), but UA_ was much more organized.

Just curious, is it a tradition to sing "good-bye" after your team wins, or did they get that from the UAA bb fans the other night when UAA beat the nanooks?

Oh, those "Seawolf? W-T-F" t-shirts were clever. Classless, but clever.

Classless, just like whoever butchered the polar bear in our logo whenever we scored or showed one of our players that had a bloodied polar bear on the A when I watched the GCI broadcast...

Or the classlessness of the person who yelled "***** THE NOOKS" at the NW entrance...

Or the Seawolf fans that got escorted out after trying to start stuff with the Nanook students
