2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

7-1 record in the last eight games before the break. And MSU is 0-6-2 in their last eight before the break. But you never can tell what's going to happen... should be interesting.

...and so it is, the Goondogs bringin' their cheapshot brand to Ridder this weekend. It's the opportunity to advance to the #2 spot in the WCHA standings. Let's get it done GOPHERS!

Here comes the stretch that will likely make or break us: vs UMD; @tOSU; @UW. Depending on how we do over these three weeks will determine if we have a shot at second place or will have to scratch and claw for home ice in the WCHA quarters. Other than the first ten minutes plus of the second period on Saturday, I think the team is playing well. Now we need to keep heading in the right direction and improving every week.

Not to mention the impact these games will have on NCAA seeding! Critical stretch indeed.

I wish I could be as sanguine about their play on Saturday. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but I still see too many turnovers that lead to good scoring chances by the other team, even a MSU that coming in had not won a game since the second week of November. The Gophers need to take better care of the puck in their own end, because against a more skilled offensive team (like their next opponent) they will pay the price if they're careless around their own goal and give the puck away too often on their break out attempts. Another issue: they are still giving up too many odd-man breakaways, oftentimes the result of their D not recognizing "developing danger" quickly enough when she doesn't have other support. But thanks to a combination of continued stellar goaltending by Noora Raty, some missed close-in shots as well as a dose of bad luck, MSU just wasn't able to take advantage on this particular day. Despite only giving up just one goal in two games, I think there is definitely room for improvement defensively.

Thankfully, there are many positives, enough that if things go right they should continue to outweigh the negatives. Obviously goaltending is again supurb, and this is huge. Normally you see great effort and skill in forechecking the other team deep in their end. The offensive pressure often results in some nice playmaking and good scoring opportunities. They continue to use their points well, and the D can really fire the puck. The scoring is becoming a bit more balanced - it was great to see May get in on the action in a big way. I think it's only a matter of time when the puck starts going in for Brausen, who is skating very well and always gives tremendous effort. Terry and Davis continue to impress greatly, and what can you say about Kessel? Obviously, a tremendous talent. And then they have Erickson, Schoullis and Kortum, all of whom are dangerous and can find ways to score at any time.

So overall I am optimistic, but not as much as I would like to be, mainly due to the defensive vulnerabilities that I'm still seeing. Hopefully these are being worked on in practice this week and they will come fully prepared to take it to those mangy dogs on our home ice! If we have a total team effort a SWEEP is very much within reach!

If Anne wasn't such an awesome D...she'd make a heckuva forward. What a shot!

As Coach Frost said the Gophers probably deserved a better fate. They had maybe a half-dozen great opportunities early on, and if they could have capitalized on even half of them they could have gone up by 3-4 goals. In any case it was good to at least get the extra point against a very good team that might not have played their best yesterday. The Gophers will need to play just as well today and will probably need to score at least another goal (maybe two more) to win the series.

P.S. Those are some great action shots in the recap Brooky linked above.

Many played very well this weekend I thought, but I have to express my particular appreciation for the series played by #10...KT was a flash all weekend, everywhere. All over the ice.

Torpedo got jammed in the tubes today I guess.

I missed the "smackdown" even though I was at the arena.

From the USCHO women's hockey main page:

Three of four

Noora Räty recorded her eighth shutout of the season as No. 7 Minnesota blanked rival Minnesota-Duluth 3-0. The Gophers took three of four points from the Bulldogs on the weekend
It's actually five out of a possible six...but who's counting? I am. ;)

You're both right. It's 5 out of 6 WCHA points, but 3 out of 4 in the national picture.

I'm trying to think back of a Gopher who didn't play well in yesterday's game. Usuallly even when we're going good, there is somebody who is off. For example, Anne Schleper did not have an All-American caliber weekend against MSU; however, I thought she had a very strong weekend against UMD. Mira Jalosuo is playing great, and I really like how they look as a pair. Kelly Terry did have three penalties yesterday, but she creates so much havoc with her constant pressure all over the ice that some of those games are going to result. I really appreciate the effort she brings every game. Laura May also had some minors this weekend, but I think Minnesota is much better off with her being more aggressive and confident than earlier in the year when she erred on the side of being too passive. And while we made some mistakes in committing penalties in the 3rd in both games, I do think Dan Lick was living out his dream of being an NBA ref and trying to help the losing team get back into the game. If you're to call our interference penalties, don't ignore all the ones that they commit.

Before the season, I thought we'd improve during the year because the young people were getting better. Instead, it has been older players that are doing markedly better at this point than they were in October. I'd say that is true of Erickson, Schoullis, Rasmussen, and May up front, and maybe even Noora to some extent.
