2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Don't mean to be too critical because the team played extremely well both days. But to add what ARM said about the penalties, you do want to avoid taking unnecessary infractions in the neutral zone, something we saw a little too much of yesterday. Especially when NOT taking the penalty doesn't result in any kind of a breakaway or scoring chance, i.e. the offending player has plenty of support from her teammates, around and behind her. Fortunately, the penalty kill was working great, and the infractions did not allow UMD to get back into the game.

Otherwise, not much else to criticize, and I have to say it was a lot of fun watching the team play so well, both days.

Kelly Terry did have three penalties yesterday, but she creates so much havoc with her constant pressure all over the ice that some of those games are going to result. I really appreciate the effort she brings every game. Laura May also had some minors this weekend, but I think Minnesota is much better off with her being more aggressive and confident than earlier in the year when she erred on the side of being too passive.

I'll do my impression of a Brown hockey parent and try to focus on the positive...gotta keep that PK well oiled with a little real game practice. You're gonna definitely need it at times in big games the rest of the way. Let's just not go overboard with that real game PK workout. ;)

On another note, always enjoy the post game video interviews with Fosty and the players provided by the Gophersports website. Does anyone know if there is any special significance to the hard hat? Or is that just for $hits & giggles?

One other thing...there was quite a bit of grumbling...er...discussion about the tendency towards "ill advised" penalties and the need to stay out of the box going into the 3rd period with the lead on Saturday. Then I watched the Gopher / Sioux men on Saturday night and came away thinking the women play smarter in that regard, comparatively.

Well, the Gopher women have made an arduous but steady climb to the #2 spot in the WCHA standings...after a somewhat rough start early, including being swept twice that I can recall...which had them in 5th place in the conference at one time I think. It's a nice job, with a lot of hard work to have made that move up the ladder, as it were. Chances they'll do any better than 2nd by the conclusion of the WCHA regular season are nil in my estimation, So the task at hand is to hang on to that 2nd spot in the standings. That's not going to be easy by any means...starting with a trip to Columbus. The Buckeyes will be tough at home...and looking for payback from the series just before the break. I expect both games to be contested as hotly, and as closely as the OT win at Ridder. At least I'm hoping the Gophers can play with the intensity they'll need if they're gonna grab some points from OSU.

I can't imagine keeping the Buckeye offense in check as effectively as was accomplished at Ridder...so hopefully Minnesota can get contributions from three lines for the series in Columbus...among other things.

The significance of the hard hat is something the players wanted to establish in the second half. The player who owned it previously gives it to the next player after what they think is a great gritty, good performance in the game. It's something the players picked up on the 24/7 show.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Agreed, Brooky, it would be a shame to backtrack now after the long, difficult climb into 2nd place. The key I think is continued improvement from here all the way through the final game. It's very unlikely they'll win every conference battle the rest of the way, but keep working on all the little things that make the TEAM better. That and the high energy level (intensity!) which I think makes this team tough for any opponent to handle, when that level is high.

I would think if they can finish strong and take 2nd in the conference they should be awarded one of the top 4 seeds in the NCAA's. But that is getting a little ahead of ourselves - let's just focus on Friday night!

Thanks for the scoop. I had a feeling there was some significance to the players. Good tradition.

Gophersports series preview.

One factoid of note:
With her eight shutouts this season, Noora Räty (pronoucned RAH-too) has already tied the Gopher record for shutouts in a season. She has already tied Jody Horak's school record of shutouts in a season, set in 2004-05. Räty now has 15 shutouts in her career. Former Gopher and Minnesota hall of fame honoree Erica Killewald holds the school record of 22 from 1997-2001, while All-American Horak had 20 from 2001-05.

Looks like Ohio State is going to share their video feed for this weekend's series. Gold Zone members can watch the game, otherwise standard blog and livestats also available.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

As usual, Roman Augustoviz's comments in his Star Tribune blog were mainly about the men's team, but he did mention the womens' team when discussing the possibility of an outdoor game in TCF Bank Stadium, sometime in the next year or two:

"Bruce McLeod, the commissioner of the WCHA, said the conference is holding a date open for the Gophers to play outdoors. Don't be surprised if the opponent is Notre Dame, the CCHA team which Lucia played for in college.

If the men's team does play an outdoor game next season, the women's hockey team also would be part of the event. A team spokesperson said the women's team would try to schedule a marquee opponent 'but nothing has been set like a date or anything else like that. It's in the works'."

If you watch the videos of the outdoor practice, Sarah Erickson hinted at this. Not a surprise.

This would be a good tie-in with the NHL Winter Classic too...

I am not sure if I have ever watched the feed from Ohio State, at least I do not have any specific recollection regarding the quality of that feed.

Can anyone provide a preview and/or a recommendation about the watchability of this programming before I renew my GoldZone membership?

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

It was great to see the Gophs come back strong in the 3rd tonight to beat the Buckeyes on the road. Also nice to put a little more distance between them and a faltering Duluth in the standings! :)

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

I had my doubts both times they fell behind; nice work gang. Big win, but then, they're all big.
A gritty performance by all accounts. Very nice to get the (O for) when behind after one monkey off the back. Let's get the sweep Gophers!

Any word on the absence of Langan?
