2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Just wondering aloud: Does the postponement benefit one of the teams more than the other? Part of me thinks the delay might dissipate Gopher momentum a little. At the same time, maybe the Buckeyes are chomping at the bit to play after being cooped up in the hotel for an extra day. But another part me says that all of that is just wishin' and hopin'.

Thoughts?
So first off, the Alumni Game didn't get canceled until I was already on campus (one of the downsides of leaving early and allowing ample travel time :( ), and then I stayed around thinking the varsity game would happen, just to have that postponed on me too. I was not amused. Anyway...

Both teams had an opportunity to practice today. I actually passed the Minnesota gals as they were headed to the arena (while I was headed back to my car). So the OSU gals weren't exactly cooped up in the hotel the entire day. I think that, in that respect, it slightly benefits the Buckeyes. But we'll see what happens when the puck drops (and I hope, for my own sake, that I'm wrong).

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

I thought the Buckeyes actually had taken Gopher momentum away for most of the 3rd period on Friday night and kind of figured that would likely transfer and manifest itself in the rematch with / as energy for OSU. I think the day off benefits Minnesota in that regard. Minnesota will really need another strong effort on Sunday. I'd bet the farm on a much closer game tomorrow. I may have to watch the Big Ten webstream as I'll most likely be digging my folks place out of the snow. :(

Seriously...the opportunity and time is at hand to wrestle 4th place from the clutches of the Beavers. GO GET IT GOPHERS!

How about doing it in overtime? ;)

GopherSports.com game recap

Oh, and the star of the pre-weekend video interview, Megan Bozek, gets the OT gamewinner. Perfect.

Seriously, Lisa Steffes was on her game, particularly in the second period when the Gophers were really swarming the Buckeye net. She was very deserving of the game's second star today despite not getting the win.

Becky Kortum gets my "unsung hero of the day" award for providing the screen on Bozek's OT goal. I don't know if Steffes ever saw the shot.

Well...now that the question has been answered, I wish Emily a complete and speedy recovery and will hope to see her at 100% and wearing the Maroon & Gold in 2011-2012. Adding Emily West to the 2011-2012 roster should make for a very exciting team to watch next season.

Nice job with the comeback OT win today. Megan Bozek saves the day...as I was already thinking, oh no...a shootout when she got the winner.

With the ups & downs and injuries throughout the first half, I don't think you can be too unhappy with where the team is in the standings at this point. To the contrary...not bad at all with a couple games in hand on two of the three teams ahead of them in the standings. Of course, they're gonna have to win some tough games in the second half to make a good finish to the first half really count...made tougher still now knowing West will not be able to help on the ice.

And let's not forget Noora Raty, who had another excellent game herself and was most deserving of the No. 3 star.

I really thought Becky was going to win it herself not long before the game winner, when she made a very strong move to the net and nearly put it in; in fact I was wondering how it stayed out.

I don't know if Steffes ever saw the shot.

I'm not sure she saw Seeler's goal from the point either. She did seem to stop everything she did see, that's for sure.

All in all, I was just glad the Gopher's found a way to win after going down by a goal well into the 3rd period. Always nice to head into the holiday break on a good note.

Looking at the box score.

The Gophers dressed one less than the number they are allowed to dress. I find myself yet again wondering about why.

Still the same answer?

No. Minor injury, not expected to be a factor after the break. Easy for me to say, I'm not the one who is injured.:o On that note, prayers for much rest and healing for our captain and the entire roster over the break. And to #17, may your surgery and rehab go well. I'm sad to see your senior year put on hold, but optimistic for the season you will have as a fifth year.:)

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

What was it that Coach Darwitz said about the type of player(s) womens' hockey needs to generate more interest in the game? For me, and not to take anything away from her teammates, Amanda Kessel is that kind of player! I love her decision-making and consistently strong effort, and I look forward to seeing this very special Gopher in action for the next 3+ more years.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Gearing up for the second half. :D ;)

Does anyone know if Noora is going to the MLP Nations Cup tournament, thereby missing the MSU series? The tournament is in Switzerland from January 4-8, and the web site for Team Finland has her listed on the roster in one spot but not listed on the roster in another spot.

EDIT: I'm assuming that the answer is no, since their hasn't been any press release from the Gophers' athletic department.

Side note: Mira is not on Team Finland's roster.

I asked athletic communications earlier in the month and the reply was that she was not, but both she and Mira couldn't get a flight back to Minnesota until Jan 4th. So they'll have limited practice in advance of MSU, but should be available barring some recent development. Hopefully Grogan is making progress as well, Kessel heals during the weeks off, nobody gets dinged at the USA camp, and we come back as close to healthy as we are going to be w/o West.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

...and now the time is near, to make good use of those games in hand...and wrestle 3rd place in the WCHA standings from the clutches of the UND Fighting Sioux! Therefore...an important weekend ahead for the Gophers. Hope all those nagging injuries are mended and rust is minimal. Let's get it done!

GO GOPHERS!

How 'bout the Buckeyes slow the freight train down a little too!
