2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Big, big non-conference win for the Gophers today. :D They allow two Harvard goals, but not until after they had chased Crimson starting goaltender Lauren Joarnt with four goals on only 14 shots.

A hearty congrats to Bethany Brausen for her first goal as a Golden Gopher!
Amen to that. Not the prettiest goal, but it still counts just the same and I'm sure she's glad to have gotten it. :)

The opening goal by Kelly Seeler was almost another blue-line bomb... she was a few feet inside the line, at the top of the right circle. The feed from Sarah Davis over to Kelly was a thing of beauty.

I know that Mira Jalosuo is very soft-spoken, but I have to give her major props for another power play goal, her second in as many games, and it also goes down as the game-winner for the second straight game. When her aim in on and she can get the shots on net, she's very dangerous.

I don't know how Harvard got 19 shots on goal in the second period, and I know I'm not the only Gopher fan who was questioning that number. It certainly didn't seem that lopsided. But Noora Räty was back in goal and back in form, stopping 18 of those plus 17 more in the other two periods to pick up the win.

And I don't know if the Gophers just weren't getting the shots through traffic on the other end, or what the deal was. After chasing Joarnt, Minnesota only had 4 shots on Laura Bellamy the remaining 27:16 of the game. But it seemed like the Gophers controlled play at least a little better than that.

At any rate, Gophers win -- their fourth consecutive -- and move to 10-5-0 on the season. We'll definitely take it.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

It was great to have the band back today. As usual, great job by the student musicians.

It was a relief for me to have them there. Am I the only one or does anyone else think the canned music that we get when the band is absent is TOO LOUD? Call me a crank but I am there for the hockey not for TOO LOUD rock music. I also think that if you are going to play music you have to stop it when the hockey starts and the recent trend is to stop the music a fraction of a second AFTER THE PUCK DROPS.

Did I say that it is TOO LOUD?

Having the band back was great, but as I settled down in my seat about a minute late today it was REALLY great to see Noora back between the pipes. After Friday's incident I wasn't optimistic she'd even be dressed, and I was wondering who might be the team's second goalie backing up Jenny Lura. It quickly became apparent that Miss Ratu was feeling no ill effects, holding the Crimson scoreless until just before the second period ended and finishing with 35 saves.

Anyway, it was good to see her back and even better to see her named the team's No. 2 Star.

I agree, and it's REALLY loud and even more annoying if you're not behind the curtain!

Had Noora been unable to go, Katie Frischmann would have drawn the assignment. Word is that she practiced as a goalie on Saturday, so I guess we can add "/G" to her "F/D" position designation.

When it is REALLY loud is while the team is warming up and before they turn the volume down. Almost as painful as some of the concerts of my youth.

Congrats would be in order to Ms. Frischmann if in fact she were able to get that most interesting of position designations behind her name. Perhaps they could invent a new one just for her and label her "hockey player". Now, THAT would be fun.

The intention seems to be to show that ours go to "11".

Well, what do you expect when you attend a Neil Diamond concert. ;p

Perhaps she could steal a page from Cesar Tovar's book and play a different position each period.

"Sweet Caroline"? bom bom BOM! Ironically, Neil Diamond was the last CD I loaded into iTunes, because the Mrs. wanted his music on her iPod.

I briefly worked at KUOM ("Radio K" -- the U.'s radio station) in the sports department during my first year as a student. We weren't doing any live sporting event broadcasts, but we did record play-by-play of Gopher baseball games so that we could use the highlights for the next day's sports news updates. I got the unenviable task of covering the game where the Gopher utility player did imitate Cesar Tovar and played a different position each inning. Tracking him wasn't difficult, but recording all the other substitutions and position switches of the other players because of it was nearly impossible. My scoresheet was a disaster.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Points up for grabs in Bemidji this weekend loom large in the jockeying for position among the top half in the WCHA. The Beavers have been pretty tough at home this season. I expect a duel of considerable magnitude between Noora and Zuzana...assuming Noora is healthy and in fact between the pipes. I think the Gophers will need a big weekend from a couple / few sources for the chance to come away with max points. Against Tomcikova, you must generate a high number of quality scoring chances to bag even 3-4 goals. This version of the Beavers probably the most potent offensively Sertich has had...are 3-4 enough? I'd feel a whole lot better if the Gophers could put up 5-6 in each contest. Hope I'm not asking for too much!

GO GOPHERS!

Gophers suffer a 2-0 loss to the Beavers of Bemidji :(

Come on, Gophers, turn it around tomorrow!

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Bozek missing from box score. Anybody?
Healthy scratch. She was in attendance.

First, credit Bemidji St -- they were obviously the better team on Friday. Their big line produced on the scoreboard and dominated at times. Tomcikova stopped everything she had to stop, but the Gophs really didn't force her to make many stops above average. A lot of attempts fizzled before they got to her. May put a rebound over an open net. She played better in the 1-1 ties last year, because Minnesota forced her to.

While I still don't think the forward lines are right (the team has struggled to score at even strength, and one of the better scorers thus far, Kortum, spent much of the game buried on the 3rd), the biggest problem yesterday was that the team just couldn't hold on to the puck. The recent trend to whiff on intended passes/shots continued. People would be skating with the puck, only to fumble it on their own. Passes were often off the mark; when they were on, they either were not caught or were to the wrong side. By the time the receiver adjusts, no advantage is gained by the pass. So my advice would be to work on passing, and just basic puck skills. BSU broke up a lot of plays, but there were a ton of turnovers that could only have been forced by an invisible Bucky Beaver.

Also, the game starts at 2:07 today. My favorite team has shown a lot of confusion regarding start times recently, often showing up late to the dance. :(

Erin Cody said after yesterday's game that Bemidji wanted it more. I saw no evidence on the ice to contradict her statement. How about today, Gophers!
