2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Gophers win 1-0. :) Ugly, but a win is a win. Big three points in the WCHA standings. Now to go get the other three tomorrow.

I mentioned ugly. Noora was a rock star in goal tonight, particularly in the first period, stopping three point blank shots. In all three cases, MSU players walked right in on her after a faceoff in the Gopher defensive zone.

The Gophs didn't look much better at the start of the second period. They were having problems staying on their skates, they were getting beat in races to the puck, they were overskating the puck... it just was not pretty. :( But then Bethany Brausen found Sarah Erickson behind the MSU net, and Erickson forced her way out in front and roofed a backhander past Mav goaltender Alli Altman for the 1-0 lead. :D

That goal seemed to spark the Gophers, who played much better (not great, but better) from then on out. It did appear that it juiced Erickson almost too much -- she took two penalties in the latter minutes of the second period :o (though the second of those was questionable at best  ).

Looking at the box score, I would have put Sarah as the second star and made Noora the first star (instead of vice-versa like they have it). Noora saved the Gophers' bacon tonight with her 27-save shutout (BTW, it's her 5th of the season  ), and Sarah spent 6 minutes in the sin bin.

Emily West was out tonight  , and it sounds like she may not play for awhile :( . Depending on how long she'll be unavailable, a couple of us fans are wondering if she could still get a medical redshirt since she's only played in four games so far this season. Note that Amanda Kessel and Alyssa Grogan were still out as well.

The Maverick website has free video. The quality of the video is better than some. Only one camera but the lighting is good enough that you can actually see the numbers. It isn't the greatest but . . .

For example, even on streaming video it was apparent that Räty was exceptional (as usual).

Particularly in the first period last night, there was a lot of snow on the ice. The puck would go along the rail and stop almost immediately, and at times, the biscuit was half covered in snow. It reminded me of watching that girls' HS game outside in the snow in Duluth on Hockey Day Minnesota a year or two ago. But bad rink conditions or not, the Gophs were off, particularly in the first. Maybe effects of coming off a bye or the result of what MSU was doing to them (the Mavs are much improved, to my eyes), I can't say. Defensively, the high slot was wide open through the first and during our D-zone draws, it seemed like we were going at practice speed while Mankato was dialed up to game speed.

...For example, even on streaming video it was apparent that Räty was exceptional (as usual).
Given the street clothes contingent we are seeing on a regular basis, we probabliy need that version of Noora night in, night out in order to be a factor. Probably not fair to put that much on her shoulders, but she apparently thrives on pressure.

Dave, as for the player you called out temporarily, I'd say she was a bit off, though I don't know that she stood out in that regard. One thing I respect about her is that she competes every time, and it isn't like she is just mailing it in. Overall for the season, I'd list her under players that have met or exceeded my expectations.

Ugly or not, those three points from last night are mighty pretty.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Dave and ARM, thanks for the eye-witness reports. Given (a) the lethargic and sloppy play, and (b) the continuing "street clothes contingent" and - to top it all off - (c) the snowy ice conditions, it does sound like we should be very appreciative of a certain netminder that allowed the team came away with the 3 points. Also sounds like the whole team should stand up and say in unison, "Thank you, Noora" and then focus on playing hard all three periods in today's rematch.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Congrats to the Golden Gophers on getting the SWEEP over a very good MSU team this weekend! And in particular, congrats to the "9-10-11 line" (and also to Sarah Erickson) for stepping up and carrying the offensive load today:

"Minnesota’s line of Davis, Terry and Kortum (the 9-10-11 line) scored four goals today, while Erickson netted the other two."

Better effort today. The 2nd period was about as good as I've seen them play this year. Hopefully, a lot of Friday was just rust coming off the bye. Both Terra Rasmussen and Sarah Erickson had their best series of the year of those I've seen.

Just as it looked on the small screen as well...in contrast to they way it looked from the seats Friday night. Oh...the standings look considerably better today than they did on this past Thursday too. Nice job with the six point weekend Gophs!

Should be entertaining with the Crimson in town. From a story linked in the Harvard thread courtesy D2D:

Name: Katharine Chute

Year: 2011

3. Favorite team to play against and why?

I love to play Minnesota because it's my home state and it's always a hard-fought battle. I love the Midwestern style of play with an emphasis on speed, physicality, and play-making.

A Happy, Safe Thanksgiving to all!

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Not often I'm not thrilled about a win, but this one could really be costly.

Gophers win 3-0 over Harvard (box score) but Noora Räty got clocked in the head right at the game's midway point and had to come out of the game. :(

The Gophers looked flat to start the game, as evidenced by the 11-4 first period shot total in favor of the Crimson. Noora made some critical stops -- Harvard could have easily been up by 2 or 3. But Minnesota seemed to get on track when they went on their first power play. And Mira Jalosuo launched a blue-line bomb that was on the proverbial frozen rope to the upper left corner of the net. Harvard goalie Laura Bellamy never saw it thanks to a screen. 1-0 Gophers.

In the second period, the Gophers started on the power play and looked markedly improved. Megan Bozek came up the ice on a rush, circled the Harvard net, went back to the blue line, passed off to Kelly Seeler, got a return pass and launched a bomb. The rebound off of Bellamy went right to Jen Schoullis, who buried it. 2-0 Gophers.

Then the incident with Noora occurred. Already playing 4-on-4, two players (one from each team) were tied up and clipped Noora. Harvard's Josephine Pucci got a penalty for slashing the goalie, and Minnesota's Bozek also got called for slashing. But Noora was down for the 10 count. She eventually got back up, but was taken out of the game. I have no other information -- I'm hoping her removal from the game was only precautionary and it's not more serious. I'm actually giving thanks for the off day tomorrow.

Enter Jenny Lura, seeing significant action for the first time in quite awhile. First, I have to give her credit for stopping all 10 shots she faced -- she played solidly, especially given the situation. :) At the same time, her teammates buckled down and prevented the high-quality opportunities by Harvard that Noora had to stop back in the first period.

I'm not exactly sure what the deal was with Schoullis' second goal in the third period. All I know is that Bellamy ended up way out of the net, Sarah Erickson initially missed the wide-open opportunity (other reports say she hit the crossbar :o ), but Jen didn't miss the second try. ;) (I'm also not sure what the officials were reviewing after the goal , but if they had waved it off, I would have pulled out some student section "cheers" I normally reserve for the men's games. :p ) At any rate, it was a very important extra insurance goal that significantly reduced any remaining pressure on Lura. 3-0 Gophers.

Overall, not too bad a game with the exception of the injury to Noora. It's another win, and hopefully the Gophers can keep it up on Sunday. And I fully concur with the media's choice for the three stars of the game...

3) Lura -- completing the combined shutout after coming in cold;
2) Jalosuo -- getting her first goal of the season to open the scoring;
1) Schoullis -- two goals to put the game away.

The GopherSports.com recap has a good writeup plus great post-game interviews with both Schoullis and Lura.

I thought the initial shot by Erickson was actually in under the crossbar and back out in a millisecond. Thought that's what they might have been looking at...but they gave the goal to #24 so...guess I was mistaken.

Amazing how you downplay what Lura just did for the team considering she hasn't played since February. Solid, solid goalie #1 quality goalie who is being given zero opportunity. So amazingly sad!!

I'm not downplaying anything. What part of "I have to give her credit for stopping all 10 shots she faced", "she played solidly", and completely agreeing with awarding her the third star of the game seems like downplaying?

Additionally, a goaltender's best friends should always be her defensive support, so the fact that they reduced the quality of Harvard's chances on net as the game went on is definitely a positive and is by no means supposed to imply that Jenny played softly.

As far as your comment that Jenny "is being given zero opportunity", I concur that it has to be a tough situation for her. If you want to slam the coaching staff for it, go for it -- you're entitled to your opinion. Personally, as a third-generation U. of M. alumnus and die-hard Gopher fan, I don't care which goaltender is played so long as they give the team the best chance of getting a 'W' in the standings.

I could only stay for the first period and half of the second, so I cannot comment on the quality of shots that Harvard was able to put on Lura. But during the first period I can vouch for what CrazyDave said about Harvard's high-quality opportunities on Raty. The Crimson were all over the Gophers in the first period, and could have easily gone ahead by a couple of goals. In the USCHO game recap Harvard coach Katey Stone even said: “I’m proud of the way our kids played; they stayed on it,” Stone said. “They never backed off. We did a lot of good things. We’ve got to get to the goaltender like we did in the first period.”

Still, as CrazyDave opined, you have to give Lura "...credit for stopping all 10 shots she faced -- she played solidly, especially given the situation."

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Not trying to jinx anything here, but given the fact that Noora has already missed time this season with a concusssion and given that she left the game after being hit in the head, it seems at least in the realm of possibility that she will not be available for the Sunday game. With Grogan also still out (at least on Friday) anyone have any idea who would serve as the rules required second goalie in pads at game time?

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

In the past when we've needed an emergency goalie, they've strapped the pads on a forward who wasn't likely to play. A couple of years ago, we'd have had an emergency goalie as one of the Lams was a goalie in youth hockey. I don't know that anyone on our current roster has experience. If they are a key member of the team, one would hate to weaken the lineup more by having them sit on the bench in goalie gear.

I didn't think the team played all that well in front of Jenny last night. Yes, they limited shots. But Harvard only had one shot on Noora through the first ten minutes of the second period, so I think they'd already made an adjustment. Most of the shots they allowed during the second half of the game were quality shots, partial breaks and odd-man rushes. There were other times that we got lucky, because Harvard had open players in position who either fell down or mishandled the puck. Jenny played well, period, not just well for somebody who hasn't played in a long time. That's been one of the problems with getting time for the other goalies over the last couple seasons; they often haven't played that well, and the team has struggled. No matter how the situation has been handled or mishandled in the past, Lura is getting a shot now, and I'd love to see her make the most of this opportunity. She's dealt with the inactivity about as well as anyone could, and I think all Gopher fans were happy for her last night. Jenny certainly was happy, and that was nice to see.:)

A hearty congrats to Bethany Brausen for her first goal as a Golden Gopher!
