2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Speaking of the Red Menace, I think the Golden Gophers will have a full lineup and some new line combos for old bucky to deal with . Go Golden Gophers! We wont be offended if you want to take two from #1 Wisco this weekend. Have fun and please plan to bring the broom! Hoping for a return of numbers 4 and 17

Hmmm...is it me or are there mixed messages here: "I think the Golden Gophers will have a full lineup..." vs. "Hoping for a return of numbers 4 and 17..." From this I gather that both players should be considered "probable"? Assuming we have the services of both this certainly would change the outlook for this weekend (YEAH!).

Does it? If we play like we did 12 months ago in Madison on the eve of 4 Nations, it won't matter who we suit up. One thing is sure -- we need a win. It was one thing when we couldn't beat Wisconsin. But that was in the days when we never lost to NoDak. Now it seems we can't beat UMD. Hopefully, the WCHA triangle shifts in our favor in this border battle.

Agreed. Please realize that I'm trying to be as optimistic as possible! Regaining a full and healthy roster is a step in the right direction, nothing more. It "sets the table", so to speak. But considering the quality of the opposition this weekend, expecting a sweep and being able to "use the broom" might be expecting a bit too much. Totally possible for sure, but maybe not totally realistic for us fans to expect it.

P.S. I recall that it was ARM who correctly predicted a less than stellar start to this season, based on the team's very challenging schedule early on. The tough schedule notwithstanding, I think we can all agree that the rash of injuries and illnesses certainly haven't helped either. Now it's time to start climbing back in it.

While I expected some early struggles, I agree with you that the player absences have exacerbated the problem. I still think we are a year away, but if we can get healthy, start playing well, and make the NCAAs, we have the look of a team whose bus an opponent wouldn't want to see roll up to their rink in March.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

So a couple of thoughts since I've been quiet all this past week.

First, congrats to the gals on an awesome offensive performance. Hopefully they can keep the energy up while improving the defense a little, though Noora helped her own cause with two offensive assists -- she's now got 5 for her career. :D

I'm just hoping that we're not going to have to deal with this "Jekyll and Hyde"-like style, not showing up one weekend and then taking names the next, for the entire season. The highs and lows of last night's game were bad enough.

One thing is for certain -- the team cannot afford to continue to take inopportune penalties, particularly against a team as good as Wisconsin.

It was fantastic to see Westy back on the ice, and I'm glad to see the team has finally decided on captains (good and sensible choices, I might add) :) .

OK then, moving right along.

Anyone know what the deal was/is with Kessel?
I don't have a clue, personally, but the write-up by the MN Women's Hockey Examiner last night said it appeared to be an upper-body injury and she had her arm in a sling. :(

a little late to the party here, but I just noticed Westy's back!!

7 goals off of 22 shots? I'm guessing Frosty will take that any day!

I was surprised at the number of gopher goals that were from around the faceoff circle. Only one on the video recap seemed to be a scrum.

Big Ten Networks excellent video quality. That is the positive aspect of the game. Team did not look like an organized group. You need legs to forecheck and create scoring opportunities. 5-0 reflects game well. Bagders was a team and dominated two periods. Reduced ice time for key players in third and Gophers stepped into game. Still Frost has to make talented individuals play as a team. It is so easy to read Gopher game and outplay them.

I am unable to disagree with your observations. I'll add Wisconsin is very impressive nonetheless...a possible understatement. Gophers were manhandled in the rematch tonight.

Totally agree and would add (IMO) Wisconsin deserves to retain its No. 1 ranking, despite its 5-7 loss to Minny on Friday night. Today's 5-0 shellacking absolutely proves that Bucky is for real, and I would not personally bet against them in any match-up for the foreseeable future.

You can make a lot of arguments for Cornell to slide back in the no 1 spot. While they lost to in OT #4 Mercyhurst, they then went out to beat #10 Harvard, and convincingly beat Dartmouth. In the lattter two games they won despite missing their two TC players. Both Harvard and Dartmouth were undefeated heading into their matchup with the Big Red. I'm with you that Wisco and Cornell are 1-2. MC hurt themselves with their loss to Niagara, and UMD also lost a game.
