2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

ESPN/MLB poll today was "who will win the AL Central?" Some funny results.

Kansas City - 1 state
Detroit - 1 state
White Sox - 1 state (in a tie)
Cleveland - 0
Twins - Rest of the world

Really, someone thinks KC is going to win? At least Ohio is honest with itself.

Wow, even illinois is close to voting for the twins.

Now if we can just bench Delmon Young. Mostly because of his defense.

Starters (9):

Span (CF), .311
Hudson (2B), .283
Mauer (C), .365
Morneau (1B), .274
Kubel (LF), .300
Cuddyer (RF), .276
Thome (DH), .249
Harris (3B), .261
Hardy (SS), .229

Bench (3): Young (OF), Punto (IF), Morales (C)
Pitchers (13): -

So you would bench Young in favor of playing Kubel in the field and DH Thome...put the pipe down son Crack is WHACK!

They can DH whoever they want (Thome, Young, etc.). Just keep captain defenseless out of the field.

That seems to be the only weak spot (besides perhaps pitching) on the entire team. No matter what happens they have bad defense in one part of the outfield. Heck of a lineup though. They'll probably suck me into thinking they can do something in the playoffs this year, who knows? Then rip my heart out and show it to me like the Vikes did. :D :p

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

His defense isn't that bad - I know he looks clumsy but you don't win with style points.

Right idea, wrong reason. Delmon is a TERRIBLE hitter. His defense is actually fairly entertaining. :)

The lineup is MUCH better with Kubel in left, and Thome DH vs. any other combination where Delmon wastes 500-600 ABs.

The game is about OBP and Power. Delmon does neither, Kubel and Thome did both last year.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Only problem is when Kubel was playing in the field, he was taken out in the 7th or 8th inning. Not a huge problem, but in a close game that could become an extra inning game, taking him out is a huge risk.

Taking him out was stupid. Can't fix that.

I am sorry but whatever universe it is where batting .249 deserves to play over batting .284 I don't want to live in. If Jim Thome is anything more than a bench player I will be disappointed.

Sorry but Thome's stats aren't what they used to be, that is why he signed for next to nothing.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Young is "learning to take the 1st pitch" away from being a very capable hitter.
I don't like his swing. He had about a 2-week stretch where he was driving the ball. The rest of the time, the ball just didn't come off his bat like it should from a guy with his strength.

Apparently you have never watched Twins baseball before.

Batting average isn't always the determining factor of who plays and who doesn't. Especially on a Twins team that values defense over offense.

Now with the DH, yes the guy who is hitting better should play. But in the field your BA doesn't mean as much.

Also, Thome had more Total bases in fewer AB than Young despite the difference in average. Which to me means if the guys in front of him are on, they are going to score more often.
