2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

I am sorry but whatever universe it is where batting .249 deserves to play over batting .284 I don't want to live in. If Jim Thome is anything more than a bench player I will be disappointed.

I would rather have a guy who hits .249/.386/.529 over .284/.308/.425 anyday. 39 points of batting average is worth the almost 80 in OBP and 100 in slugging.

You already live in a universe who realizes that BA is less valuable than OPS.

Delmon sucks because the dude can't buy a walk.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Ah yes the walk...isnt the walk the only difference between Mark McGwire and Dave Kingman? :p

I want a guy who puts the ball in play...if I want another guy who bats .240 I would say play Punto everyday.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

I want players who get on base more often without making an out.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

I want Baby Jesus to play all nine positions and use ghost runners.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

How awesome would it be to have a .360 average at the 1-9 spots in the lineup? :D
Plus he hits for power now too.

Imagine the pitch counts that would be generated by having him bat all 9 positions...

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Imagine the number of 6-4-3's

I keed I keed! :D

He may put the ball in play, but he makes outs far more often. You only get 27 of them a game, why give them away? Having 46 points lost in BA and ending up getting on base 80 pts more often is a huge swing.

By the way, a .046 difference in batting average works out to 20 hits per season if they both get 500 at bats. A .080 difference in on base % works out to about 40 outs per season. You're going to trade a game and a half worth of outs for one more hit per week? AND less power? Really?

500 at bats...if Thome gets 500 at bats this season I will eat my hat.

But hey if Thome was really that valuable it would explain why no one else seemed to want to sign him and the Twins got him so cheap...kinda like Crede.

And of course no player has ever improved after their 24th birthday so there is absolutely ZERO chance Delmon could improve. I mean the stats alone you so eloquently posted show how it easy it would be for him to improve his on base %...but nah he is 24, obviously he missed his prime!

My lord people are fickle.

Let's see what happens in spring training. Pitchers and catchers haven't even reported yet, for god's sake.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

The best part is I dont even like Delmon Young :D

We're all about rewarding people for a good month around here. Cuddyer got a new contract because he had a great September after Morneau went down. Yet the big pantywaist won't move back to 3rd base because there's "too much pressure to hit for power." Newsflash, genius: you hit 30 homers last year! I was shocked when you got to 25!

Where was I? Oh right. Delmon had a good September but people are still crapping on him. Must be because he's black. ;)

He could be the same color as the wink smilie for all I care, I just wish he'd quit waving at 1st-pitch sliders 6 inches outside.

Handy you complain about the team never getting out of the first round. If you give Thome's ABs to Delmon we won't even get out of the Central. Unless Mauer has another freak like season.

Delmon is the Nick Punto of AL left fielders.

It is actually a pretty good bet that he will. :p

You are out of your mind...this team could sleepwalk and win the Central. If you think Thome is going to be the difference between being swept by the Yankees and making it out of the first round, well, no offense but you are the type of rube the Twins loooooooove!

It is unbelievable how fast people give up on a guy who is barely old enough to drink. Imagine if the Twins had given up on a lot of the guys on their current roster (like some fans, including myself and I was wrong) had they taken the same approach. Cuddy wouldnt be on the squad for sure, Morneau would have been dropped the season before winning the MVP (he batted .239 in 141 games) and Torii Hunter would have never been part of the Twins turnaround as he batted a robust .255 as a 24 year old and funny, had some of the same issues Delmon does. (Hunter struck out 72 times in 422 at bats as a 24 year old, Young struck out 92 times in 416 and Hunter's OPS was nearly 40 points less than Young's and they had the same OBP)

Now feel free to dismiss Justin and Cuddy as flukes if you like, but I would say Hunter has had quite a good career since then. And yes I know Torii is great defensively but that isnt what we are talking about. The point is back then none of us would have thought Torii would still be playing 10 years later let alone be playing some of his best baseball ever offensively. Maybe you alll need to stop hating on Delmon Young for 5 minutes and realize he might not suck as much as you all hope he does.
