2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

The yankees won every game they played against the twins last year. I'd say it's quite obvious they were the better team. Does that mean they're going to win every game 17-0? Of course not. But it does mean they're going to win the majority of the time the two play each other.
In baseball, the better team routinely will win 6 or 7 out of 10. You seldom see a team go 10-0 against the other, unless one is a playoff team and the other is a 100-loss type of team. The Twins have had some great stretches against bad Detroit and KC teams.

I think there are some reasons why the NYY had such great success vs MN last year, beyond just being better. There seems to be a combination of the Twins not really believing that they can win and the Yanks not thinking they are going to lose. When NY gets down, they don't worry, but the Twins do. The Twins no longer have the dominant starter who can beat a team by himself as Santana once did. Their current pitching approach requires four or five guys to perform to beat a great team. If one guy fails in a given game, you get to watch the other team celebrate.

Besides being better, the Yankees are just deeper. Over the course of the season, you can win a lot of games by playing small ball, doing the little things, not making mistakes, and all of the "Twins way" schtick. But come big games against good teams, you have to have guys who can win games, not just avoid losing them, and NY has more of them. Once you get to the postseason and you've replaced starting infielders like Morneau/Crede with essentially Gomez/Tolbert/Harris type guys, your chances of winning on one mistake by the other pitcher go way down.

Yeah I am sorry, but if you don't win a game against a team all year including the playoffs they are better than you and there is no debating it. Yes they had plenty of walk off wins but those are still wins. You want to take the moral victory and say "yeah but we sure did keep it close!" that is fine, but that is the mantra of the loser.

I mean if the Twins were even close to being on the level of the Yankees, dont you think they would have won a single game...you would think that the stars would align and it would happen...I mean I am pretty sure a lot of non-playoff teams beat the Yankees yet somehow the Twins couldn't.

The Twins were overmatched, just because the scores were close means nothing.

Or a fair ball double was called foul... ;)

*yawn*

Whining about the calls...another mantra of the loser :p (and the Sioux! :D )

Of course if you can conclusively prove that after that double everything happens exactly the same so the Twins win I will call the papers and we can prove that Heisenberg was wrong! ;)

Given the Yankees scored in the following half inning, the Twins would just have a tie, not a win at the point "everything" happened.:(

I certainly wasn't whining by pointing out that not every game was decided purely on baseball skill/talent.

Also nowhere in that statement did I say the Yankees weren't a better team last year (1-9 is still pretty conclusive).

I do enjoy watching you pretend you have all the answers though.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Head to head we stuck with them...they just knew how to finish.

I'm with Dude Love on this one. THere were more than just a few games against them where we had a lead and blew it. Sure, we might lose a game or two by 10+ runs to the yankees but seeing the lineup they are putting together there isn't a team in baseball that isn't susceptible to do that.
How is it even in question who was the better team?

Parise didn't touch it with a high stick!!!! We were robbed!!!! The refs are out to get us!!!! :D

Ya know for someone who spends so much time on the internet you really have an issue figuring out what smilies mean :D ;) (MNS gets it :) )

But hey, how did that prediction for the Bears go again Miss Cleo? :p :D ;)

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Apparently life in fantasy land has fallen on hard times.

I have a feeling the same people who are saying the Yankees were "clearly the better team" are the same ones saying that the best team didn't win in the NFC Championship. :p

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Why name an opening day starter now -- Baker could be injured like he was last year, and there isn't much separation between the starters.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Maybe the Twins will give reason to forget the misery of the Gophers FB, BB and H teams.

Yeah and the misery of the Vikes, T-Wolves and Wild too!!!

No pressure Gardy! Go get them boys.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

I don't think you can be miserable from whatever the Wild end up doing this year or next. But yeah, everything else has been pretty disappointing.

I too did not get selected to purchase tickets. Oh well...the beer is probably cheaper at home anyway.
