2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

You are out of your mind...this team could sleepwalk and win the Central. If you think Thome is going to be the difference between being swept by the Yankees and making it out of the first round, well, no offense but you are the type of rube the Twins loooooooove!

It is unbelievable how fast people give up on a guy who is barely old enough to drink. Imagine if the Twins had given up on a lot of the guys on their current roster (like some fans, including myself and I was wrong) had they taken the same approach. Cuddy wouldnt be on the squad for sure, Morneau would have been dropped the season before winning the MVP (he batted .239 in 141 games) and Torii Hunter would have never been part of the Twins turnaround as he batted a robust .255 as a 24 year old and funny, had some of the same issues Delmon does. (Hunter struck out 72 times in 422 at bats as a 24 year old, Young struck out 92 times in 416 and Hunter's OPS was nearly 40 points less than Young's and they had the same OBP)

Now feel free to dismiss Justin and Cuddy as flukes if you like, but I would say Hunter has had quite a good career since then. And yes I know Torii is great defensively but that isnt what we are talking about. The point is back then none of us would have thought Torii would still be playing 10 years later let alone be playing some of his best baseball ever offensively. Maybe you alll need to stop hating on Delmon Young for 5 minutes and realize he might not suck as much as you all hope he does.

Well put.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Actually defense is what I was talking about as my first and foremost reason for not wanting Young in the field/lineup.

I agree you don't necessarily give up on players, but you also don't have to start him in your major league lineup every night. That's what the minor leagues are for.

Heck they just had this exact story about Span not being ready when Torii left and needing 2 more years (till now) to actually ascend to the CF starting spot. They wouldn't of went out and got Gomez as part of the Santana trade if he had been ready.

I'm going to miss Gomez. This team better hit a lot of long ball this year cause they don't have what it takes to play small ball anymore. And defensively they're not going to be as good either having to play either Kubel or Young in the outfield every night. I guess they decided they couldn't win being the piranhas so they built the typical American League long ball team.

I hope they can pitch. Cause if not they're going to have to win a lot of 8-6 type ballgames, IMO.

I think the pirana-style Twins may have died with the end of the dome. I'm actually encouraged that they're going in a slightly different direction when they aren't going to have the advantage of playing there anymore.

What did Small Ball ever get the Twins? Sorry but winning one first round series in 5 playoff appearances pretty much shows how much doing things "The Right Way...the Twins Way" is pretty worthless.

To win you need to mix it up...if all you can do is go station to station then you are nothing better than a Mid-Major.

Got them division titles which is all they're probably going to get anyway. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see them having the dough or the pitching after Mauer signs. And if Thome is the big bat signing and hits left like the rest of him, what value add is he really?

At least small ball Twins were fun to watch. Long ball Twins might not be as fun? I guess that's what my thought was, I'm sorry to see it go.

The difference is that the Twins knew they were terrible in '99 and '00 and chose to see if Torii would develop. The Twins aren't in that same position any more in today's Central.

I don't hate Delmon, I hate the Twins for trading for him and playing him so much. But I love the Twins. It's tough. :)

Delmon will have six years in the bigs after 2012. Then he will begin to play decent ball -- for someone else. We will be left holding the bag on 1500-2000 mostly useless ABs and hopefully a season or two of decent ABs. We could have at least pulled the Liriano move on him one of the last two seasons and slowed down his clock towards free agency.

I actually think he will improve this year due to getting limited playing time and facing a lot of lefties. 250-350 ABs will be fine for him. If he can slug like he did the last half of '09 (or if Kubel or Cuddy suck) he may get a bunch more playing time.

I just hate it when people deny how terrible he has been on aggregate to date. When comparing his entire 2009 to other AL leftfielders, he was worse than Punto compared to other AL second baseman.

Scooby, the Twins were 4th in RPG last season - do you really expect their production to drop because they got rid of Gomez while adding Hardy, Hudson and Thome? While NY was clearly the better team last season, the Twins should have won a least one against them and the Twins have made as many strides as any AL playoff team out there to get better.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

I think last season was the first season in a long time they weren't centered around small ball. They stunk at it for the most part, and won the Central regardless. Made me laugh.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

While NY was clearly the better team last season

The Twins lead three games late in the game last season at Yankee Stadium in May...and we also lead at some point in two of the three playoff games. The Yankees are not "clearly" the better team. They just knew how to finish.

I agree to a point and I believe that they appear to have closed the gap for this season, but when you go 0-9 (or something like that) against a team for me it's hard to argue there wasn't some clear separation (physically, mentally, managerially) even if many of the games were close.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Jacque Jones signed to a minor league deal. He is a replacement for Jason Pridie who went to the Mets. I would be surprised to see him play at all.

0-10? Swept in four, three and three. I can't of how many of those 9 games were come back wins for the Yankees. I know they had 3 walk offs in that four game series at Yankee Stadium

Eh. The Twins hadn't signed their typical over-the-hill player that they'll just end up cutting before June yet.

No offense, but:

NYY 103-59 915 runs scored, 753 allowed
Twins 87-76 817 runs scored, 765 allowed

The yankees won every game they played against the twins last year. I'd say it's quite obvious they were the better team. Does that mean they're going to win every game 17-0? Of course not. But it does mean they're going to win the majority of the time the two play each other. Which they did.

Unless you have a different definition of "better team"

Head to head we stuck with them...they just knew how to finish.

Did anyone else sign up for the opening series lottery to buy tickets? Drawing is apparently on the 16th.

*Crosses fingers*

I'm with Dude Love on this one. THere were more than just a few games against them where we had a lead and blew it. Sure, we might lose a game or two by 10+ runs to the yankees but seeing the lineup they are putting together there isn't a team in baseball that isn't susceptible to do that.
