2009-2010 Polls thread

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

So, not to overstate the value of polls and rankings, but for the sake of debate.... I'm assuming the fact that Minnesota needed to go to a shootout to beat Bemidji twice doesn't enter into the occasion.... the math says they got two "W"'s, right?

But, In theory, what would you put greater value on? A win and a tie against #4, or a two shootout wins against an unranked team?

I'm pretty sure the math favors the Gophers in this, but..... isn't that just a wee bit illogical?

Just asking...means nothing in the scheme of things, but... figured it would make for some debate! Thoughts??

Their Overall record will show 2 ties.

I don't know the answer to your question. My assumption would be they aren't recognized as Ws, but rather two ties officially. I wouldn't guess the Gophers results would be favorable to the Lakers W & T though in any mathematical rankings formula.

Blogger and brooky are correct -- two ties for the Gophs. However, the MC tie does allow Minnesota to pass them for the time being in the PWR, because Bemidji is currently not a Team Under Consideration, while Clarkson is. Thus, Minnesota owns a lead in both common opponents and TUC, to offset the Laker advantage in RPI.

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

Quoting myself from the Gopher thread ;) , I had a thought about the next opinion polls...
Given UNH's home loss to Providence (the two finish their home-and-home on Sunday), Clarkson losing to and then tying Mercyhurst, Wisconsin losing the first game at UMD, and Harvard's tie with Cornell on Friday, I expect the Gophers will remain in second place in this coming week's polls (though they'll probably lose that last first place vote in the USCHO poll).

It will be interesting to see how the polls shake out all together. UNH getting swept by a non ranked Providence this weekend. MN going into OT twice against Bemidji, Clarkson losing then tying Mercyhurst, Harvard tie and a win. Not knowing that much about the polls, will any of these results affect the standings?

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

My take:

-- I'd be pretty surprised of any outcome other than Mercyhurst 1, Minnesota 2. Three points against Clarkson is better than two shootout wins against Bemidji State, and Mercyhurst was ahead to begin with. Though Minnesota may pick up some points due to the logic that Clarkson is a common opponent, and Minnesota swept them. In fact, this logic more or less has Minnesota at No. 1 in the USCHO Pairwise Rankings right now.

-- I expect Clarkson to pass UNH at No. 3. A 1-point weekend against Mercyhurst is much better than getting swept by Providence in my view.

-- I have no idea how far UNH will far. Probably not too much. Though fact remains, UNH hasn't beaten any of the top 6 teams outside of Hockey East. But I expect UNH will far only to 4 or 5.

-- I expect Providence will move into the top 10.

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

actually Providence is up to 10th in the Pairwise Rankings now (dropping Holy Cross), so never mind...

I'd be surprised to see Mercyhurst stay at number one simply based on their weak schedule. Friday's win over Clarkson was only their second win against a top 10 team. (They played Cornell early - in fact Cornell's first games -when they were yet to be ranked) Other than that, they split with UMD and couldn't sweep number 4.

#1 Minny
#2 Mercyhurst
#3 Clarkson
#4 Harvard
#5 Wisco
#6 UNH

I also expect Quinnipiac to slip in at #10, surprised it hasn't happened before this.

IMO, Mercyhurst stays at #1, UNH doesn't fall as far as #6, and there is no way that Wisconsin gets swept by UMD and gets ranked higher than the 'Dogs.

I would be surprised to see Mercyhurst fall from #1 and UNH fall Lower than UW.

I am surprised that Bucky is even in the top 10 with the inconsistency that has become the norm this year.

This weekend was the first time this season that Wisconsin has lost a series. While they've been up and down, they've usually spent more time being up. Plus, having won the title 3 times in 4 years gives a team credibility in the minds of the voters, even though so many of the main contributors are gone.

The only sweeps all year have been over Minnesota on Halloween Weekend and Minnesota State to round out the first half. They split with RMU and went 2-2 on the year with North Dakota who each have only five wins all season.

They played hard this past weekend against UMD but once again the small mistakes were magnified in the end results. Injuries on almost a weekly basis have really killed any attempts at building momentum from the constant change in lines due to a player or more change to the lineup nearly every game.

Look Mercyhurst is 2-1-1 against top 10 teams. What's Minnesota? 4-3-1. Hardly dominant either. These teams are at the top because they've consistently beaten the teams they should, while the other top 10 teams haven't. Meanwhile, the top 6 or 7 of teams have shown some parity with each other head-to-head.

It's fine to argue that Minnesota should be No. 1 because they have a better record against common opponents (UMD & Clarkson) than Mercyhurst, but splitting UMD and taking 3 points against Clarkson is not a bad set of results, even for a No. 1 team.

And Mercyhurst's schedule isn't weak. It's not as strong as Minnesota's (2nd-best in the country), but it's still the 6th best. There's very little gap between the bottom of the top 10 and the next 10 teams, so record against top 10 teams isn't a particularly useful metric, at least far less useful than it has been in the past.

This week's USCHO poll. Holy cow- NU up to #6, Wisco falls to #10

Despite going 1 - 2 - 1 (all HE action) since the New Year, UNH hangs tough in the fourth spot, a testament, I would say, to the strength of Hockey East, who for the second week on a row has four teams in the top 10:D :D :D

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

And maybe a good chance at placing 3 teams in the Elite 8?

CHA....1
WCHA...2
ECAC...2
HEA....3 ???

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

As I said in another thread, Hockey East has a reasonable shot at 4 -- the scenario is Clarkson wins the ECAC, Harvard struggles post-Kessler, Wisconsin continues to play .500 hockey against everyone.

It's REALLY tough to tell how good Hockey East is. Oddly enough, no one from Hockey East played Minnesota or Mercyhurst. Clarkson almost ran the table against the conference (but split Vermont!!). UMD swept BC. Providence took 1 of 4 points against Wisconsin (which isn't too impressive considering how many weaker WCHA teams split Wisconsin). Harvard beat UConn and tied UNH. You would expect Hockey East to do better against Harvard in the Beanpot, though they won't be facing the goalie that shut out Minnesota twice. Providence swept Cornell, but it was during a Hockey Canada weekend.

Anyway, we'll just have to wait and see until the tournament. But I really have no idea whether we'll see 3 or 0 Hockey East teams in the Frozen Four.

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

It's REALLY tough to tell how good Hockey East is.
I looked at the aggregate records of the 4 conferences, minus games against teams like Sacred Heart and St. Anselm's which show up in the team's record but don't shed any light on strength of conference comparisons, and HEA did the best with a +11. The WCHA is second with a +7, the CHA is +1, and all of those games over .500 had to come at someone's expense, so the ECAC is -19. One theory would then be that this is a down year in the ECAC, Hockey East and ECAC play each other a lot, so HEA benefits. But it does look like this might be the deepest HEA in a while, though that could potentially result in none of them hosting an NCAA quarter.
