2009-2010 Polls thread

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

With Mercyhurst's track record against Wisco, I would have waited till the NCAA's are over before I made a comment like this.
A little safer now? ;)

3/1/10 uscho.com poll

1 Mercyhurst (15) 27-2-3 150 1
2 Minnesota-Duluth 26-8-2 133 2
3 Minnesota 24-7-5 121 3
4 Harvard 20-6-5 98 4
5 New Hampshire 19-7-5 88 5
6 Clarkson 22-10-5 65 6
7 Connecticut 20-8-7 58 7
8 Cornell 17-8-6 42 9
9 Northeastern 17-9-7 26 8
10 Quinnipiac 19-10-8 14 NR
Others Receiving Votes: Providence 13, Ohio State 5, Boston University 4, Wisconsin 1

Quinnipiac moves into the top ten despite being eliminated by RPI.
One could get the idea the WCHA monopoly on NCAA titles is in grave danger.

You'll notice, as much of a wiseguy as I am (and I most certainly am!) I wasn't touching the preceding comments with a ten foot pole!!

Not out of the woods yet, but that particular scenario seems HIGHLY unlikey!

Let's just say impossible. The math doesn't allow it, unless they get an exemption as the host nation (and they aren't hosting.) Having followed Minnesota in 2001 and UMD in 2004, I don't think the defending champ gets an auto-invite either. So you can no longer see those particular woods.

Who is really the NCAA favorite now?

Who is really the NCAA favorite now?

I have no doubt Mercyhurst will be No. 1 in the final USCHO poll, and that they fully deserve the No. 1 seed this season.

But question, if you had to actually pick a favorite, and had something at stake with your pick, who would you choose?

Right now I'd have to say UMD (assuming this 3-1 lead holds, okay now it's 3-2... )

Has a stronger CHA prepared Mercyhurst better for the toughest teams? Is the advantage a playing in the strongest conference not as large anymore?

Is the close CHA final between Syracuse and Mercyhurst a positive (the close game prepares Mercyhurst well for NCAA competition, and it's the result of a high level of performance by Syracuse), or a negative (it reflects that Mercyhurst was played down to the level of even average CHA opponents like Syracuse and Niagara)?

Of course, I'm aware I made the same arguments for Minnesota being No.1 over Mercyhurst a month ago, and then Raty took off and Minnesota promptly fell apart and has yet to recover.

Do you still pick the same way now that the brackets have been announced? Meaning MC's road to the championship game is BU & Harvard/Cornell, while UMD has UNH & UM/Clarkson. Yes, BU is one of the hot teams, but they still finish the season with 17 wins, less than half of their games. I think the previous low for an NCAA tourney team was 18, and those were by Ivies. That potential MC vs Harvard matchup is intriguing, because it looks like the NCAAs are the best chance to see those two teams meet. I would love to see Cornell make it to the FF though, so I can see their players.

Maybe you are right about UMD. They share a bracket with three teams that are slumping. If that trend continues, it looks good for the 'Dogs. However, they are the only home team to draw a quarterfinal opponent with NCAA experience, so that's one intangible. In any case, they'd still have to win the championship game against a team that is likely NOT slumping.
