2009-2010 Polls thread

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

You're probably right, in that it may happen, but I think that a) gives too much importance to a single series; b) gives too much credit to BU, who IMO has been slightly overrated all season long. BU is a decent team, but they've had a mortal lock on the top ten, when I think they've been roughly equivalent to teams like SLU and OSU.
I agree 100%, and I certainly was not endorsing the aforementioned simple logic. I think that's a very good prediction though.

I'd go Niagara at #9, and #10 is really a flip a coin spot.
Yes I agree with Niagara at 9, actually. I had the order wrong. Generally all else equal I'll look more towards the higher-end results, and Niagara has draws with Mercyhurst and UNH (road) and a road split of Cornell.

I'm not sure why Niagara is only 13th in Saturday's Rutter rankings (bad prior?), but Niagara is 10th in RPI (behind Northeastern), and 11th in the WCHODR.

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

On a further look, it looks like this KRACH is missing Syracuse altogether, so somebody at USCHO needs to update some data.
Thanks for pointing this out. Ed Trefzger just fixed it. I think the data is there -- I'm sure it was just a matter of adding one team code to one database.

So this puts (9) Northeastern, (10) Niagara, and then UConn and SLU neck-and-neck at 11 with slight edge to UConn. And UConn and SLU is precisely what I was puzzling over the most. ;)

I think with the teams that close you have to go with UConn's road win at SLU, and both teams are trending pretty well in recent results.

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

Actually, looking at this more closely...

there's really no great case for ranking UConn above Northeastern. Case for Northeastern is they were better vs. BC and Providence. Case for UConn is that they have better results against Northeastern, and their 2-0-1 vs. BU/SLU is better than any set of results Northeastern has. Both teams have a bad home loss (Maine for Northeastern and Colgate for UConn). So that's pretty close.

Consider, Northeastern vs. SLU --
case for Northeastern, slightly better vs. UConn, 3 points vs. Providence on road while SLU drew at home
case for SLU -- home draw vs. UNH whlie NU lost at home, better result vs. Qpac, no real bad losses, win at Cornell and UNH draw is better than any result Northeastern has.
-- I think this one's clearly in SLU's favor.

Now, SLU vs. UConn --
case for UConn - UConn has the road win at SLU, better results against BU
case for SLU - better results against Colgate, tied UNH at home while UConn was swept on road, again no real bad losses, better result against Cornell.

I don't know -- I think I'll still go SLU at 10 after all. Take back what I said before. All these teams are generally even, and I think I'd judge the record against the other 9 teams I'd have in the poll (SLU 1-2-1, UConn 0-3, Northeastern 0-1) above other categories, more so than UConn's road win early in the season.

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

It really does call in to question the credibility of the rankings. Like the say, they only ranking that matters is the one after the last game is played. I just wish I didn't have to wait three months to see them corrected!!

What -- you don't like seeing the Lakers at #1? :p Even the NCAA tournament doesn't do a lot to fix the problem if our issue is who should/shouldn't be at #9 and #10. I imagine we will see some separation over the next three months, like you say, but it seems to me like the gap between 10 and 20 is smaller than usual.

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

Haha, I guess they can't same to get the number 10 slot right. I'd say PC is way more deserving than UConn.

Re: 12/14 poll's up

That poll might have today's date, but that thar is last week's data...

:o Yer right! I just saw the date, checked UNH, wondered how BU managed to keep a grip on 10th, and went back to work. Didn't look at records.

I went looking elsewhere and found the new poll on the Hockey East website...

Re: 2009-2010 Polls thread

I pulled three quotes from the Christmas wish thread (though one is from my own post)...

I'll add a wish that the women's page on USCHO had better and more updates!

Not a wish, but a thank you, to Brian Schulz for all his hard work in his webcasts of games.
8) (Concur with Crimson Hockey Fan) On-time and better updates to the USCHO women's page
9. Updates for Womens hockey - Thanks to Brian for his continued effort. Very much appreciated! Thanks to Hux and Blogger for the commits list - tedious work.
... but what does it say when USCHO doesn't correctly update their own poll? (shaking head) It's a sad state of affairs. :( :(
