Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Wow. Caps score with 13 seconds to go, to avert the end of their win streak...at least for now. 5-5 into OT. Some really poor officiating all the way around tonight...the aforementioned waived off goal (and then the phantom call on Montreal seconds after it was waived off), the non-call on Green intefereing with Gionta with less than a minute to go and the Caps on a 6x4. Yeesh.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

I wouldn't call it that. The Caps had two calls against them that resulted in a two goal swing in favor of Montreal.

Oh come on, I haven't had much to cheer for this year. :) The poetic justice comment had more to do with a team missing 41% of it's offense and playing 5 guys who were in the AHL last month beat the hottest hockey team on the planet, after blowing a 3 goal lead. They deserved to win that game. And the officiating was bad all over.

The Ovechkin play was actually the right call it would seem - something I did not know, but in TSN's game write up they mentioned a rule (69.something) that prevents someone from knocking a player and puck into the net.

Edit: The second goal was not offsides - the puck came back in off a Caps player:

You'll have to forgive me if I don't take the Canadian network's stance on a ruling that helped a Canadian team winning the game. :)

:D fair enough.

If anyone gets the video of Ovechkin steamrolling Hal Gill, it would be worth posting. He destroyed him.

Edit: Found it:

Ok, I'm sorry, but I'm not that impressed by it.

1. It didn't look like Gill was anticipating that hit.
2. Gill is bigger than Ovie, sure, but the angle of the hit (the spot where contact is made) makes the hit look bigger than it is.

Example: if tDarkness (6'5" or so) is standing there, and I (6'2") come full speed and lift up/jump a bit, and bury my shoulder into his chest, and he doesn't expect it, he's going flying. That's just the way it is. I've had a 5'6" guy absolutely level me in boot hockey using that technique (although his hit was 100% clean).

Just sayin'.

Sweet, this might the first thing ever shown on MSNBC that makes HD worth while.

If anyone in the Twin Cities wants to watch it, maybe you can come over, as long as we can switch between the game and ice dancing. ;)
Don't you have 17 TV's in your living room? :p

Chelios DUI Case to be thrown out for lack of evidence.

And if you have some time to kill, there's video of the arrest too!
Was the case heard in Grand Forks? :D

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

I gotta say that it was good call to not allow the goal in the Caps-Habs game. Ovechkin charged Gill, left and his feet, and may even used his elbow. There should have been a penalty assessed to Ovie but Puck Daddy explained that a penalty call cannot be made once a play is over. Kind of a weird role, but I suppose you could argue that the ref didn't have time to make the call before the puck entered the net. But then the "I was about to blow my whistle" thing comes into play.

Its stuff like this that makes me dislike Ovechkin. He's a heck of a hockey player, and I would trade the farm to get him on the Bruins, but his reckless and sometimes dangerous hits seem to go unnoticed by the officials.

Only 3, but we only have 2 channels on the Dish receiver so we can only watch 2 things now. It was mentioned earlier that Pirates of the Caribbean is going to be USA, so that definitely has to be on one TV, nonstop. The other one we will flip-flop between the US-Canada game and ice dancing.

;)

A guy playing the game that hard and scoring tons of goals... Oh, the humanity!

Yeah I know. Obviously I love his offensive ability and enthusiaism, he is great for the NHL. I just don't like the dirty stuff he does. I've seen him charge guys countless of times, he jumps on a lot of his hits and I've seen him go knee-to-knee a few times as well. His athletic ability is superior to anyone in the game, but he is dangerous sometimes too.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

And if he didnt hit people and knock them around he would be called a ***** like Cindy Crosby. Ovechkin talks the talk and walks the walk unlike most of the "Superstars" in the NHL who have AHL retreads do their dirty work for them.

I agree.

He gets away with charging penalties left and right because he is Alex Ovechkin.

He has turned into the same thing Crosby is in regards to being untouchable by the officials only Ovechkin is physical while Crosby is just a whining baby.

They both are great for the game but this changing of the rules stuff to coddle them is ridiculous and not fair to the rest of the teams in the league.

Jagr would get raped by other teams when he was a Ranger and nothing would every be called. Sean Avery can't even breathe around an opposing player or he'll be called for a penalty.

It's a joke.
