Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

With the rest of the NBC Olympic broadcast schedule being released, we got to find out what NBC will be showing instead of the USA v. Canada game.

Men's Giant Slalom and Ice Dancing.

Yup.

Remember, NBC is the broadcast partner the NHL bends over for whenever possible. The USA-Canada game will be carried, instead, on MSNBC which many folks do not have offered to them in high definition.

Wow.

Anyone know an email or contact at NBC to complain to about this?

The response you'll get from them will probably say, "But we'll be showing Russia-Czech Republic for you earlier in the day on NBC! See! Hockey! We care!"

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Raise your hand if you've done this before.

I'm guilty, but I never did it in a game.

me too - but not in a game. I did it in practice, and my teammates gave me a rousing stick tap. :p

unrelated, I am excited to see the Sharks are on TV tomorrow night, at a normal time zone time. :)

The color commentary will be a drunk Chris Matthews.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

I really wish they stuck with those jerseys. Too many teams in the league have incorporated black into their colors. Same reason why I want to see the Kings go back to purple and gold.

Hey, those look kinda like the Wil... oh. Hell.

As for the Olympic coverage, every so often you'll be able to hear Keith Olbermann shouting, "No, really, I used to be a sportscaster! Can't I be in front of the camera? Pleeeeeease?"

Or the real answer of "We're trying to get soccer moms to watch the Olympics. Hockey fans will watch on whatever channel we tell them to. Go screw yourself."

Let's be honest here, given Ebersol's and NBC's way of treating the Olympics, the intermissions (and parts of the game) would be about Dany Heatley's courageous journey of dealing with Dan Snyder's tragic death. Now, with ice dancing, I can hear about the Russian's uncle dying of poison from Chernobyl and how she's dedicated every time she's skated to his memory.

No one wants to watch that.

Unfortunately, Olympics coverage is always about sports lightly decorating heavy doses of life stories.

Oh, and that Dany Heatley thing would air on CTV but wouldn't take up too much time since Canadians are more interested in the games as well as over-hyping how stanuchly Canadian they are and how that makes them more loyal than any other country ever.

Is the game being broadcast? Oh, it is you say....well how about that. So you're complaining about what exactly? I know this is going to come as a shock to everyone, but hockey is not popular...even in the Olympics. You know what things are popular in the Olympics? Well, judging by what's going to be broadcast during prime time on NBC that night, you may have guessed that those events would be skiing and skating.

It's obvious that NBC is looking to hype ice dancing due to the number of popular, dance-themed reality shows that have come out in the last 2-3 years. More women/older couples than ever will easily tune into that event if it's shown during prime time. The skiing events are merely traditional.

USA Network is showing Pirates of the Caribbean.

How dare a television network try to maximize ratings.

It is unbelievable how many people on this board complain about this exact thing. Read any Badger hockey thread. :)

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Wait.....NBC has been trying to maximize their ratings? That can't be right.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Sounds like they did a great job with the Pens/Caps game the other day.

NBC got a 1.3 rating for the game, tied for highest rating they've had for any of the games they've had this year. NBCs ratings are up substantially from last year but they're still pretty weak looking.

...which helps explain why they're not real eager to put Olympic hockey on the flagship.

The thing I guess I find strange is that if you're going to put any game on NBC from the prelim. rounds, why Russia-Czech over US-Canada? Must be the other possibilities for broadcast at that time.

That's where my issue comes in here. Obviously USA-Canada is getting prime time treatment (7-10 PM ET) because the ratings in Canada will be gonzo and it's the game in the opening round that will get the most viewers there. By that same token though, wouldn't you think NBC would want to do the same thing? After all, you could hype the hell out of the game and go wild with it especially since it's the only opening round game being carried by NBC.

The other side of that, however, is that RUS-CZE is scheduled to start on NBC just an hour earlier. With the opening round there's no threat of numerous overtimes overriding into coverage of other events. So... It boils down to NBC thinking that women and men of a certain persuasion are going to flock to their TV sets to watch Belbin & Agosto maybe make a run at gold and they're going to want to do it at a certain time. Mind you, the ice dancing event on that Sunday isn't even the medal deciding night, that's the following evening. NBC is going with prime time coverage of ice dancing on Friday, Sunday and Monday nights.

Given that NBC is all about cross-promoting their other programming it's baffling to me that NBC would botch up this one opportunity to market the hell out of their regular hockey coverage while also stirring up patriotism in the most basic way possible playing the underdog card. It just all looks like NBC is screwing themselves by not going with the money game for American audiences in the opening round and is then boning over the NHL by doing so in which they'll just blame the league for poor ratings in the end anyhow.

All that said, this just keeps up the NBC company line of never showing a game with a Canadian team involved in any way, ever. :D
