Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

I think Molson gave him a "quit or we'll fire you" ultimatum. Pierre Gauthier will be named interim GM.

You think?

People don't give up their good paying job voluntarily simply because things aren't going great. I don't know why organizations even try to put forth such facades. Just call it what it is... he got fired.

He was "asked to leave", as we used to say when someone was expelled from my high school. :p

Bob remains with Canadiens in role as "special advisor"...cites not willing to commit to an additional 4-5 years in the role. Presser live on HabsTV at NHL.com

Yikes...Gauthier not the "interim" GM at all...just GM. That's not good. Ugh.

Habs taking a page from the Blackhawks in burying mistakes deep within the organizational hiearchy until they quietly go away?

Speaking of hiding mistakes, I heard Huet is going to need about $3.20 in change to make the drive to Rockford soon. Unless he buys an I-Pass.

Gainey's contract was up at the end of the year, anyhow. His "special advisor" role is just a title,I'm sure. In typical Gainey fashion, he flashed some of his dry wit, deadpanning that he may "learn piano" with his free time now. For better or worse (seemingly worse), Gauthier is the man now in Montreal.

The only good thing to come out of that presser was that Gauthier alluded to keeping both goalies through the rest of the season, a position which I endorse.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Habs have a press conference slated for 4 pm. Rumor is that Bob Gainey is stepping down as GM. If they end up making Jacques Martin the GM... Look the F out, the downfall begins.

I know losing to the Bruins is embarassing, but that's a bit much...

Interesting non-call on Jeff Carter's late hit on Anssi Salmela after Salmela scored a goal.

The hit looked a lot worse than it seemed (or at least, despite Salmela's leaving the ice on a stretcher, I'm not sure that it deserved a misconduct or a suspension), but I still don't get how he doesn't get an unsportsmanlike conduct or an elbowing call.

Also sort of surprised that the Devils haven't tried to get Carter to pay. Of all the clean hits that cause fights, how does this one slide?

I didn't see it in real time (the Vs guys were hinting that it was a blatant late hit) but I didn't like the fact at how Carter raised his arm (really following through on the elbow/forearm). If it was just a shoulder check, I don't think anyone would have blinked.

I felt like it wasn't late enough for him to avoid contact, but it was late enough that he should have been able to stop himself from following through on the hit.

And I'm with you on the elbow.

I thought it was a slam dunk to be a minor or double minor when I saw it.

Also, Carter is coming from behind the play. Even though Salmela is coming across the slot area(after he scored) he did not see this one coming. Scary incident, and hopefully he gets back on the ice soon.

Nice to see the Flyers gooning it up completely turned the game (leaving the Devils with zero offensive D-men) plus with Carter not being tossed he ended up scoring the GTG.

I'm sure Colin Campbell will consult the suspension flow-chart just like he did for the David Booth hit and the hit on Patrice Bergeron a couple of years ago.

The only guy on the Devils roster capible of going after Carter is David Clarkson whose hurt. Peters is too much of an offensive and defensive liability and you'd never want him against Carter's line as a match-up. Clarkson's injury has killed the Devils in terms of protecting their players from the clown college types like Avery, Carter, and Richards because he's good enough to skate on one of the top 2 lines to watch Kovalchuk's, Parise's, Elias', etc. back.

I doubt Carter gets suspended as it's technically a legal hit, but it's completely unnecessary. There wasn't a penalty on the play and no one on New Jersey even went after him even to discuss it.

Just an ugly hit. Salmela has a broken nose and lost teeth from either the hit or the ice.

I'm not so sure it was even an elbow. This pic looks like it was shoulder. I also didn't think the hit was late. In another replay you can see that Carter had him lined up well before he shot the puck. It was a scary incident sure, but I don't think Carter did anything wrong. I think it was Salmela's impact with the ice that caused the damage.

I thought that the x-factor in the hit was the follow through with his right arm, which is obscured in that picture.

Yeah I saw that too but I didn't think it influence the hit. He flung the arm out after the fact, the elbow never seemed to make contact with Salmela in vicious manner. Just my two cents.

I can see it either way, I suppose.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

I don't really want to comment on that specific hit, since I only saw it briefly on the NHL overview last night, but there does need to be something done about hits to the head. Hockey is a physical sport, but do we really as fans want to see an opposing player potentially maimed so that our team secures a win or scores a goal? Every other sport punishes head shots, even if they are otherwise "clean" hits. Only in hockey does someone say something like "That's why you need to keep your head up." No, even if someone is looking down at the puck, they shouldn't expect to have someone's shoulder slam into their head at high speeds.

Especially with everything being learned about the long term effects of concussions, there needs to be some sort of automatic repercussion when there is contact to the head.
