Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Just got this in my inbox:

ThrashersLogo_250.jpg
After several months of negotiations toward a long-term contract with forward Ilya Kovalchuk and his agent, we were unable to reach an agreement and elected to trade Kovalchuk and defenseman Anssi Salmela to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Johnny Oduya, Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier and a first round draft pick in 2010.

We want you, our fans, to know that throughout the negotiation process, the Thrashers organization remained committed to offering Ilya a contract that exceeded those of the league’s best and highest paid players, and was commensurate to his skill level and performance history.

To that end, we offered Kovy several lucrative packages in an effort to meet his financial objectives. One offer that we extended to Ilya would have made him the highest paid NHL player on a per year average with $10 million per year for seven years. Another offer totaled more than $100 million over 12 years, and it, combined with the previous contractual commitments that were made to Kovy, would have earned him more money than any other NHL player in the history of the league.

If we had met Kovy’s ultimate demand, we would have jeopardized our ability to build a competitive team around him and retain our other young players as they became eligible for new contracts in the seasons ahead. At the end of the day, we couldn’t close that gap and simply reached a point at which we couldn’t reasonably go any higher.

We’re excited about the addition of all three players and feel that Johnny and Niclas will quickly complement our team of budding young stars, highly-skilled veterans and elite players. We also look forward to having Patrice join us in the near future. Our goals for this season have not changed—to make and advance as deep as possible in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs—and we move ahead with a new sense of purpose that is energized by our continued climb in the standings as we position ourselves to compete with the best in the NHL.

We will maintain the option of bringing in more players, in addition to the ones that we have acquired in the trade, to make sure that we are fully competitive for the remainder of the season and the postseason.

We thank Ilya and Anssi for all they have done for our organization and wish them well. And we thank you, for your continued support, and look forward to your enthusiastic presence in Blueland to help drive us into the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Read into that what you will...

Obviously it's a mass e-mail to all Atlanta Spirit/Blueland subscribers.

I wonder if Waddell is on his way out after this and the e-mail was his "I tried, fu** y'all"...

Should he be? I don't know. This was the second year that the Spirit group had their sh** together and allowed Don to open up the purse strings. John Anderson was finally getting a system in place. And, homegrown prospects were starting to blossom.

Yeah, I got that...

Well the Bruins will have two top 10 picks. Nice job sucking again tonight.

You need to score goals to win hockey games? Who would have thought?

This team has devolved into the Pooley/Army version of offense so ****ing fast...

I could write about one million things about the Bruins. It's amazing how the entire organization, from Jacobs to Wideman and every one in between, took a collective dump on the season.

I'm not sure how not being able to keep Kessel somehow gave the entire organization a mandate to not score goals, but there it is.

It will be very interesting to see how Gainey handles the goaltending situation in the next few weeks, with both Price and Halak RFA's this summer. Halak is now unquestionably their number one; deservedly so. That being said, hard to picture them letting Price rot away as a back-up. I'd like to see them keep both, but I don't see that happening....not to mention their goaltender in Hamilton (Desjardins) is having a stellar campaign.

I think the proper phrase is "I tried, fu** ALL y'all." ;)

I guess Cormier will be punished in the NHL after all. :D

:D

Seriously, that kid deserves to be thrown in jail. At the very least, every NHL goon from Boogaard to Zdeno Chara should make a pact to return the favor.

It seems to me that Price is still quite young and struggles with the pressure of playing in Montreal (the whole "Roy Salute" imitation last year said a lot). Maybe he needs a clean slate in a market where the fans and press won't breathe down his neck quite so much.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

I just got home from the Wild game and this is the first I'm hearing of the Kovy trade. I'm not sure if there is a deeper analysis that explains this better for the Thrashers, but this my first thought:

The Devils just screwed the Thrash without the curtosey of a reach around. W T F!?!

I read Wadell's comments earlier today. I really don't know what more he could have done? He may not survive in the ATL, and that sucks. Awesome position to be in when ONE player can ruin your tenure. /sarcasim

Maybe he'll survive? I hope so. Kovalchuk, what a dick. Just my opinion...

Good for the Devils, tho..

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Part of me wonders if Kovy and his agent just dragged the negotiations out to put other teams "on notice" as to the kind of money he will want this summer.

Theres about 3 teams who can even THINK about spending that kind of money, if they're interested. My guess is he is forced to come down on what he wants, because the cap ain't going up anytime soon, and especially if its true that ATL offered him real close to top dollars for the league.

I can't believe he'll get close to those numbers at free agency in this cap world.

Maybe, but it sure as **** isn't guaranteed like it was when the ATL offered it to him.

Since Army will be the next B's coach, I guess that's an apt comparison. :D

I read somewhere that the last 18 B's picks have not reached the NHL yet. Is that true? If so that puts playing for draft picks in a whole new light.

I just looked it up and I believe Brad Marchand from the 2006 draft was the last Bruin to make the NHL.
