Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

You are probably right. I know someone who works for the Rangers, and she said she can't wait for him to retire. He's apparently a jerk and all he cares about is building his retirement house in Canada.

The feeling is he will retire at the end of this season or next season. At least there is light at the end of the tunnel?

Please let it happen sooner rather than later.

I heard a rumor that the Rangers were offering Callahan, Dubinsky, Drury, Kreider, and two first round picks for Kovalchuk and someone else. FORGET THAT!!!

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Fun news, lots of signs pointing to the Devils. Don Waddell was in NJ for the Kings/Devils game recently and while most folks assumed he was there to scout the Kings he may have been there to see the Devils as well. Assistant GM Rick Dudley was in NJ tonight watching the Hartford Wolfpack play the Lowell Devils.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Maybe Don was just trying to see if the Devils would take Salmela back? For the glut of defensemen ATL has, the jobs held by Popovic, Valabik, Salmela, and Shubert could be accomplished cheaper with Oystrick and Welch.

Oh and I'm praying that some team is dumb enough to want Arturs Kulda. What a bust of a defenseman. He plateaued once the team won the Calder Cup before his rookie season (he joined the team after his junior team season was over, helped the Wolves win the Calder, then subsequently sh** the bed after receiving his rookie contract)

Don't let his +30 decieve you, that's all because he's paired with Chris Chelios. Christ, I would be a plus if I was on the ice with Chelios.

Two easy points for the Habs tonight.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Seems a price for Kovy has been leaked. (it's reposted from HF, so I don't have much faith)

"Brooks is reporting the Atl asked for this package for Kovy:
Staal or Del Zotto
Callahan or Dubinsky
Grachev or Kreider or Stephan
First round pick"

It doesn't sound right; Waddell has a cord of D-men, and for ATL needing now roster players to fill in for Kovy, getting a top pair d-man, one 2nd line right winger, a prospect, and a draft pick seems wrong.

I would have expected more along the lines of a pair of second liners and a third/fourth line guy.

Not necessarily. Despite the Bruins being in a horrid losing streak they have played well in the last three games. Perhaps its a sign of them turning the corner....or maybe not.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Craig Custance, after speaking with Don Waddell, reports that the Thrashers offered Kovalchuk a 12 year, $101 million dollar deal and he turned it down.

Yeah, he was never staying in Atlanta.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Nope.

Kovy spoke to the media this morning (I think the link is: http://thrashers.nhl.com/club/podcastplayer.htm?pid=392&iid=19905.

I haven't heard it myself, but a quick summary was that he still likes the organization, and thought that it's possible to remain a thrasher still.

If he wanted out this badly, why continue the charade that you're staying? Is his agent trying to play chicken with Waddell and losing? Kovy that hard up for cash that he needs such a huge contract? Did Darren McCarty teach the rest of the league nothing?

Latest rumor is the Sharks have put together an estimate; and the Wings may silently be seeing what they could do.

*edit* The funniest post I read on HF was:
"For another 20 million, you could buy the Coyotes instead of just Kovalchuk."

Makes sense. Tim Gleason probably gets Mike Komisarek's spot now that he's out for the year.

Correct.

Gleason officially named per an article on ESPN.

Is it me or did the USA's defensive corp just get that much weaker?

Martin is a very underrated defensive defenseman and I have more faith in Komisarek than most people out there probably do.

Here is Waddell's statement he released this afternoon.

GM Don Waddell released the following statement Thursday afternoon regarding contract talks with winger Ilya Kovalchuk.

"Our goal from the start of this negotiating process was to sign Ilya Kovalchuk to a long-term contract. During the process, Kovy affirmed his desire to be a Thrasher for life. We’ve spent several months exploring scenarios with Kovy and his agent to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, and offered many lucrative packages in an attempt to meet his financial objectives. Unfortunately, we’ve reached an impasse and at this point he has declined all of our proposals and we can’t reasonably go any higher.

"Ultimately, we offered Kovy more than $101 million over 12 years, which would have been the highest contract signed by an impending unrestricted free agent in the history of the league. If accepted, this contract would have been the second highest offer ever to any NHL player. We also met his desire to be the highest paid player based on average annual salary with a separate offer of 7 years at $10M per year ($70M). This offer is $0.5M higher per year than any other player.

"If we went beyond these offers, we would not be able to retain the young players on our roster when it came time to sign them, or invest in other top tier players needed to assemble a truly competitive team. Therefore, we are aggressively exploring all of our options as we move forward.

Any Sharks move for Kovalchuk would be pure rental, probably Clowe, + Huskins/Murray, +Mitchell/Couture and possibly a pick, with the assumption that McGinn or some other kid would take Clowe's spot next year and that the money that currently would be going to Clowe would be put together with the Blake money to spread around raises and to decide Nabokov's future.

It stings. Martin was a great puck-mover and Komisarek blocks so many shots he should have a GAA. Well, he did anyways, haven't paid much attention to him in Toronto.

Just puts eve more presssure on the USA's third and fourth liners to backcheck and Miller to stand on his head.

Still can't wait for the first games.

I know the deck is stacked against this team but I have a good feeling about the roster regardless if they play the right system and everyone fills their roles.

No one gave the junior team much of a chance to win the title this year either and look what they accomplished.
