2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

I've changed my mind on this B's-Kovalchuk idea. At first I thought it was a waste of time, and they'd be better off blowing up the team for picks. The more I think about it though, it makes some sense....

Say you deal the Toronto pick and another pick to get Kovalchuk, under the stipulation of course that he'll sign a long term deal. Do you do it? I think so. Get him and pair with Savard and some other spare part (say Lucic) and that's a top notch #1 line that can actually score.

Then the #2 line becomes say Bergeron, Krejci, whoever (Ryder/Wheeler/Julien/who cares). Not exactly the Malkin line but good enough.

Next deal Thomas for a steady stay at home d-man. Lots of team need solid goaltending. Get a #2 defensive defenseman and roll the dice with Rask in net.

That's not a bad team. Its certainly a playoff team then you have to hope the goalie stands on his head or something. Right now, unless they pick up Kovalchuk having Savard around is useless because he's passing to a bunch of fire hydrants. Put him with top level talent and that changes the equation.

Not that I expect the B's do to something this bold.

A couple of thoughts....

I think Waddell wants players that can step in and play now, not just picks. If the B's gave up Krejci (who depsite the off year, is a talent) and some of their flotsam (Wideman, Ryder), a top prospect (Hamill or Colbourne), and a 1st rounder perhaps the deal gets done.

Note that Kovalchuk's agent has stated on record that he will not sign an extension prior to 7/1; he intends on testing the waters. So this is truly a rental situation, it would seem.

As for Thomas...I can't wait to cheer for him in Vancouver, but I don't think there's much market for him based on his horrific contract/age/trending down abilities.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

RDS reporting that Chicago, Rangers and Bruins are the teams hardest after Kovalchuk and the Kings are still lurking about.

Lost in this talk is the brutal contract work of the Bruins. I know Chiarelli will take the heat for it, but idiot contracts have been a staple of the Bruins since before Chiarelli was around.

Tim Thomas' contract is just horrible, even more so since it's a 35+ deal.

What???? How could they possibly afford him? Sather is an idiot, and I'm still hoping Kovy ends up on the Kings b/c I hate this Rangers team and the Kings are my 2nd favorite so I'm essentially switching allegiances for the rest of the season.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Not only can the Rangers not really afford Kovy, what would the point be of trading for him? This season is a lost cause.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

I hate some of the Rockford kids that are current hawks, but **** would they ever be able to grow like Peverley did. Ladd, Buff, etc. Not sold on Skille though. There is a reason he keeps toiling in Rockford and it is NOT similar to Peverley's situation with Nashville/Milwaukee.

I just hope that Waddell doesn't hang on too long and lose a great deal.

Apparently there's five teams fully in the hunt, the four I mentioned and then a mystery fifth. Some have mentioned the Flyers have interest but they too have little cap room.

The catch here is how bad do teams want to rent him out? Atlanta isn't granting teams a window to get an extension worked out with him before they deal so that's out. All of those teams, except the Kings, have cap worries. I don't know how it'll work out but it's going to be fascinating to see how it pans out.

Waddell met with Kovalchuk to tell him that a trade will get done soon so this WILL happen and a lot of good folks think it's done before the Olympics. RDS now says the front-runners are Boston and Chicago. Baffling.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Yeah, it may be better for the kings to just try to get him on July 1.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

From TSN (and occasional USCHO poster) Bob McKenzie:

Teams in mix for Kovalchuk include: Boston, New Jersey, Rangers, Philadelphia, Calgary, Chicago and L.A. Some more. Some less. Auction time.

Maybe I am being too logical about this, but why would anyone want to acquire him before the break, and then have to pay him while your arena sits empty for 2 1/2 weeks?

There isn't a market for him because he's NOT GOOD! He's a flopper and has horrible positioning half the time. I can't think of any contending teams that would want Thomas because he wouldn't be any improvement over what they already have.

Hopefully your cheering for him will be limited to watching him open the bench door because he shouldn't see the light of day behind Miller on the depth chart unless the USA is up or down by five goals.

Tim Thomas <strike>contract</strike> is just horrible, even more so since it's a 35+ deal.

FYP!

Currently this is Chiarelli's fault, and unless he pulls a rabbit out of his hat ala Ainge with the Celtics I don't see an easy way out. Lucic, Thomas, Ryder, Bergeron - way too much money for these guys. Clear out two contracts and you can pay Kovalchuk.

Also, just to reiterate, no way do you trade #1 pick for a rental, which is probably why the B's will go ahead and do just that.

Get him to get some time on the ice with your team before the Olympics so you're not spending the crunch time that will occur after the games getting him used to playing with teammates. The schedule after the Olympics is especially tight and for some of those teams, dropping a game or two after the break could be very painful.

That's a fair point. Just an awfully expensive one.

And call me an a sshole, but I'm hoping some team mortgages their future (cough, Boston, cough) on this rental, and Kovalchuk rips up his knee at the Olympics.

Muwhahahahaha....:D

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

When you're supposed to be a defensive minded coach and your team sucks defensively...that's probably not a good thing.

Bad defensemen and a goalie having a miserable sophomore slump as well as routinely being thrown under the bus by the coach go a long way. Not to mention how quiet Rick Nash has been this year and he's been healthy all season.

Their defensemen are atrocious. I've seen them play a few times this year, and for a fairly well-sized group, they're soft. I sure wish they'd take Spacek back.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

F2b&g, Kyle Wellwood is still playing and is just as big a target.

As for the Kovy trade, the Blackhawks play tonight, so if there is an arrangement there, I would not expect anything announced till tomorrow. Atlanta doesn't play again till Friday, so that provides a very good window for them to get something done.

Kari is looked to be moved also; but John Anderson wanted to get him one NHL game before he gets moved (likely a showcase game to potential suitors).
