Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

As for weight jokes, a few fans noted the irony that Kari Lehtonen was re-habbing in the hometown of McDonalds at the same time that the McRib came back. :D

(Kari had a bit of an obsession with MickyD's when he first played for the Wolves.)

Can't say Atlanta didn't try to keep him. They tried like hell, he just, clearly wants out despite everything he's been saying.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

F2b&g, Kyle Wellwood is still playing and is just as big a target.

I leave him to DGB. ;)

I think Kovy just wants a shot at the Cup sooner, rather than waiting for ATL to put more of the puzzle together.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Yep, it's frustrating to see him say that he loves the city, wants to be a part of the only franchise he has known, and then turn down a sizeable contract that would have set him up for some even bigger contracts in his early to mid 30's.

That or his agent thought Waddell was bluffing.

Eitherway, I'll be glad once this circus is over. Kovy still never bought fully into John Anderson's methods. Plenty of time before the next game to get a deal done.

It'll be interesting to see where he signs this summer. If he wants a cup, he's going to have to consider something closer to the 7-8 million per range, I think, between the cap not going up and it being difficult to build around a 10 million per player not named Ovechkin.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

I thought I read somewhere that Waddel wasn't willing to let the negotiating team work out a deal to sign Kovalchuk long term because it gave the other team an advantage in the trading process.

I think if he sticks to his guns, that will actually hurt him.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Eagles, that is true. I can see how it would go either way; but I think doing it Don's way is benificial for the "now" aspect, in that you get a rental for a cup run, and we need roster players now. There is no guarantee that even if you give up key pieces now that Kovy will sign with the team. And there is no way you sign him to a deal and then trade him (like Hossa from Ottawa) because you need to have clear cap space on the receiving team.

It's easiest to treat him like a rental that will be hitting the UFA market.

That's what McKenzie reported. I'm sure he'd be able to get much better players in return if a negotiation window was allowed, but I think he's trying to get teams eager for a rental to up their bids in a panic move.

This could turn out to be really ugly for Atlanta if no one blinks.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

I really think the Hawks are the easiest to make this deal work (on a rental basis) with how the Hawks need to reduce salary, the Thrash have room, and the front office relationships that could make it work.

Kings, as a rental doesn't make sense. Them picking up Kovy on the free agent market is easier to figure out.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

What???? How could they possibly afford him? Sather is an idiot, and I'm still hoping Kovy ends up on the Kings b/c I hate this Rangers team and the Kings are my 2nd favorite so I'm essentially switching allegiances for the rest of the season.

They can't afford him, and as a Ranger fan, I don't want him. I'm sick of short-term band-aids. They can't sign him as a UFA, they have to pay Staal this summer. So what is it going to do? You need a team to win the cup, not a couple of ringers. They shouldn't waste the talent they have on a useless trade that won't salvage the season, they should work on building the youth that they have and stop throwing their money away.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

The way Sather's been going lately, he'd get Kovy by somehow managing to get someone to take Redden off his hands. The Rangers would be Cup favorites if they just kept Glen away from the phones and office the first couple weeks of July the way he rips teams off and gets them to take the awful contracts he signs.

Basically you're telling us why Sather will trade for him. Hahahaha.

As if you needed further proof that Eklund sucks at life, he says that Colorado and Minnesota are in on Kovalchuk talks.

I heard the deal is going to be Kovy and Kari for Backstrom, Burns, the rights to Cuma, 2010 1st round and 2nd round picks.

:p ;)

Komisarek is done for the year with shoulder surgery, as per the Leafs.

Gleason likely to be his replacement.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

OK Wild fans, time to mourn - Eklund has officially found out the Wild are NOT after Kovalchuk.

Obvious news is obvious.... And f-ckin' stupid.

You are probably right. I know someone who works for the Rangers, and she said she can't wait for him to retire. He's apparently a jerk and all he cares about is building his retirement house in Canada.

The feeling is he will retire at the end of this season or next season. At least there is light at the end of the tunnel?
