Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Speaking of HNIC, they just interviewed a Florida Panther (Kenndal Mcardle) who scored his first career goal, with one of the most pronounced stutters I've ever seen on TV. Must have been real nerve-wracking on his part, but good on him for going live.

Toronto kid gets his first NHL goal against the Leafs -- on HNIC. Doesn't get any better for him.

Dear Minnesota Wild,

Thank you for Benjamin Pouliot.

Sincerely,

Montreal Canadiens

This is a trade that has worked out wonderfully for both teams. I, for one, am a Wild fan that is happy to see Pouliot realizing his potential.

Agreed, I was just being a smart-a ss in response to a similar post a couple weeks back.

It would be easier for me to cheer for Lats if he didn't whine so much on the way out of Montreal...though that's faily common with many francophones (Laraque, Tanguay, Boullion).

To be fair, Lats was the only player on the Habs that RDS was completely obsessed with.

I'm sure that RDS is now building an idol to Pouliot though.

I'm sure if RDS had their way, #57 would be hanging in the rafters now.

Maxim Lapierre was also pretty beloved last year, and a lot of it was well deserved. He was a top notch 3rd line centre. This year he's been nothing short of terrible, so they've backed off the man love.

From what I've gathered, they were fixated on Latendresse and why Martin wasn't "using him appropriately" and then stayed fixated on him for weeks after he was dealt but now that Pouliot has emerged great for them, they've cooled off a bit.

There's a guy sitting right behind the Avs bench tonight who's wearing a random Whalers jersey.

GLM: Even more gasoline has been thrown on this Albany fire.

http://blog.syracuse.com/crunch/2010/01/change_in_albany_could_be_felt.html

It would be a natural for current Rats affiliate Carolina to join up with Charlotte. If it is still in the league, that would leave Albany without a parent club.

Word is that the Rangers might be looking to end its affiliation with current partner Hartford. While a New York-Albany marriage might seem like a possible fit, a Rangers-Syracuse deal would also be a possibility.

Syracuse could offer more stability and a much better atmosphere for the Rangers, and Crunch owner Howard Dolgon has been known to play a round of golf or two with Rangers assistant GM Jim Schoenfeld.
If the Rangers don't work out, how bout an affiliation longshot? Buffalo. The Sabres are said to be antsy in Portland and could be shopping for a new farm team. How ironic would that be?

So we have:
Edmonton to Oklahoma City
Springfield without an affiliate
Texas without a franchise
Iowa without a team/money/affiliate
Albany without an affiliation

I was trying to find the post on HF where they say who owns the AHL franchise (either the city/AHL team or the parent NHL club) but I cannot. From what I can find, these are the only AHL franchises that are owned by their parent clubs:
Hartford Wolf-Pack (NYR)
Lowell Devils (NJD)
Manchester Monarchs (LAK)
Worcester Sharks (SJS)
Bridgeport Sound Tigers (NYI)
WB/S Penguins (PIT)
Toronto Marlies (TOR)
Houston Aeros (MIN)
Peoria Rivermen (STL)
Texas Stars (DAL)
Abbottsford Heat (CGY)
Soon to be Oklahoma City (EDM)

So I don't know where Carolina plans on getting a franchise from to put an AHL club in Charlotte.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

My thoughts on how the rest of the B's season plays out....

1) Under the title of "insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" Coach Julien is fired before the end of the season despite team stocked with AHL players and overpriced contracts (Wheeler, Bergeron, Lucic) making it impossible to make any deals to improve team.

2) Bruins manage to lure Scotty Bowman out of retirement to fulfill his desire to coach every team in the league at least once. AHL level stiffs in awe of playing for legend put out 150% effort down the stretch, but team still barely misses playoffs.

3) Ownership inexplicably announces that Bowman will not be asked to return next year, and instead team is looking for a new (as in "cheaper") direction. After exhaustive search, Tim Army is lured from Providence Friars for the cheapest contract for a pro coach since the 1950's and the promise of all you can eat free nachos at Legends after each game.

4) During the offseason, Chiarelli surprises all draft analysts and instead of drafting desperately needed scoring, swings a deal with Ottawa trading top pick for rights to Eric Gryba. Also announced 4M a year, 3 year contract extensions for Wideman and Bitz, explaining that "they're playing as well as the other guys making 4M a year, so we had to be fair".

5) Team announces yet another rebranding effort, this time named "Its Called - A Cure for Insomnia". In official Bruins program, the word "backchecking" mentioned 5,000 times.

6) Season tickets once again sell out, owner Monty Burns seen having "money fight" with Smithers up in private box during one game a year that he attends.

Amazing. A+

Gee, Pete, who knew trading away your most talented player would mean your team wouldn't be as good.

Way to destroy the foundation that was slowly coming into play.

Washington up 6-2 on the Islanders in the 2nd. That great player Washington has? I think his name is Ovechkin or something? Ya, he has 0 points.

Scary.
