Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

NHL cut a deal with Connecticut - Whalers gear is more than readily available everywhere now.
Was it a deal, or did the trademark simply expire and push the logo into the public domain?

Regarding the Winter Classic, I'm starting to wonder if the NHL emptied their heavy artillery too early. Think about it this way: If the first one was at Wrigley, the second at Fenway, and the third in Buffalo, how excited would you have been for the last one? What venue next year could possibly stack up to the last two?

Boston, to me at least, looked even better than Chicago did on television, and it was probably the only place that could have done that in my mind. Will a football stadium, or any other baseball stadium, carry the same cache? Yankee Stadium is big and shiny and beautiful, but can it really compare to Fenway/Wrigley in this context? Outdoor hockey is still a novelty, and I can't imagine anything that would stop it from being a moneymaker, but has the Winter Classic peaked too early?

Also, in regards to the Rangers being the "heavy favorite" to have the game in Yankee Stadium, isn't a bowl-game contract through 2013 is going to make it nearly impossible to have the game at Yankee Stadium on New Year's Day?

I think your right... i think the NHL looked at the genie they captured and are trying to use it whenever possible to boost interest. In that theory of things it would seem to me that they do Minnesota next. Another problem going here is that there's a limited number of feasible American locations to play this game.

I think the NHL will want to do either Minnesota or Denver next... under this theory they would do Minnesota first then Denver. I'd want to have both of those in the mix, but as you said, don't blow it all at once.

IMO, I think the next one should be Detroit at either Michigan or Michigan State... and then meander their way to Minnesota and Denver. The NHL's marketing and business scheme has always been INCREDIBLY short-sighted so I think they'll try to hit all the obvious situations and then they'll over extend themselves on some city where it's just near logistically impossible (some place warm).

Here's the thing though. Sooner or later you are going to have to loop through the same cities unless you want to let the game go to Canada. You also run a risk in going into northern US cities without hockey... because you might spark some hockey interest where the NHL won't allow a move.

Don't be surprised if the NHL decides to go international with the KHL creeping in... as they run out of cities taking the game to Sweden or Finland will become attractive.

Mea culpa - it appears that's the case. Guess you can't believe everything you read on the Interwebs. :o

It appears it broke down like that, although this story states that the rights belong to the Carolina Hurricanes now.

The Whaler Watch website message board seems bitter that the state of Connecticut/City of Hartford did not renew the trademark and get someone to produce the merchandise themselves to make money for the state and city.

So, keep in mind, when you buy any new Whalers gear.... You're supporting the Hurricanes. :D

I just want a legit way to get a Whalers jersey... but its one of those things that won't be allowed in case they end up selling 100K of them.

Five or six years ago, sure.

36 points in 65 games isn't awful. It's not great either but I think Satan will be a top 6 forward for the Bruins considering their scoring issues.

Put it this way...It can't hurt them and could end up reaping nice benefits for them adding a decent forward midseason.

Miro Satan being a top six forward for anyone is a bad sign, he's on the backside of his career. I love Miro and he was a solid player before, but he's done now. It can't hurt them per se, but it's not really helping them either.

These are all just really crappy Band-Aids to throw over the bleeding wound of getting rid of Kessel.

That I would agree with. I love it how everyone thought the B's would be fine without Kessel and they had too much scoring depth around him that they'd be able to offset the loss.

It didnt help having Savard out too and Wheeler undeperforming, but anyone who didnt realize the B's severely overacheived last season was living on Pandora.

Has Kessel played in Boston yet since being traded?

Twice and booed out of the building every time.

Savard looks frustrated out there but at least Sturm has scored a little bit lately to help the Bruins out. I think if Kovalchuk becomes trade fodder, the Bruins would be wise to offer up just about all of their wad of draft picks to get him, including the first rounder from Toronto they got for Kessel.

Yeah, but they'd have to compensate Kovalchuk. Not the Bruins' style.

As much as I dislike the rumor-mongering that goes on during HNIC Hot Stove, LeBrun does have a point that the most logical landing spot for Kovalchuk, if a deal can't be worked out in ATL, is Chicago because of the mutually beneficial nature of the potential trade.

That rumored potential package the Hawks would potentially give up is a lot to do to a team towards the end of a season to try and add another piece. Sure the Hawks need the salary relief eventually but if they're content with just adding Kovalchuk for the remainder of the season while not minding blowing out a few solid but pricey guys... More power to them.

ATL doesn't want draft picks, ATL wants impact players now. Ie: Kessel's.

If the Chicago deal is true (Kari+Kovi for half the 'hawks? Haven't heard anything myself), it's going to be Ladd+Sharp+Buff + key players who could definitely use the top line minutes ATL could provide.

Look for Skille, Bickell, Greentree, Brophey, etc. from Rockford to fill in the bottom two lines.

More likely to include something like Versteeg-Barker-Byfuglien, and it's purely hypothetical at this point as LeBrun admits in his ESPN blog today. Ladd is a free agent at the end of the season, Sharp would be a huge hit to the team from an on-ice and off-ice standpoint.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

National ratings for the Winter Classic on NBC were down 10% from last year's game.

Whoops.

Also, let the fun begin: Rick DiPietro has been recalled from Bridgeport by the Islanders. The injury pool begins NOW!

You mean people didn't watch the gimmick game at the same level as they did before...I would like to pretend I am shocked but I am not. I am a hockey fan and the game barely registers with me.

But I bet it registers a lot more than a normal regular season matchup between Boston and Philly.

Considering the Red Wings probably have one of the 3 largest American fanbases, especially given their propensity at road games, this is hardly surprising.
