Marc Crawford tries to be funny:

"He played well tonight, but he had no impact on our guys," Crawford said of Avery. "You're giving him far too much credit. Give him credit during Fashion Week."

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

All of the quotes from Dallas about Avery seems to tell me... They were very caught up in whatever he was doing.

What a pack of losers. He was in their head from the start tonight.

True. Cheli must've forgotten that at 47, his tolerance is slipping. :p

All kidding aside, it's still kinda disappointing. I could see that happening 20+ years ago as a twenty-something star in Montreal, but at his age you expect people to know better.

I didn't see what his BAC was, but maybe he knew he was Chris Chelios and could get away with it, or he didn't think he was over the limit, or it was a short way to wherever he was going and figured he could make it safely, etc. Maybe the last time he was all schnooked he knew it, and he wasn't "that bad" relatively this time and thought he could drive.

I'm not saying it was smart, but when one is drunk, some reasoning gets warped sometimes.

How the hell do you not see that? That's a penalty shot and you have a perfect view of the play!

No guts you sorry ref.

They haven't released the BAC. I love the Let's Go Wings board and how they assume that this is because Cheli is away from his wife and daughters and he doesn't have a "baby sitter". No, more like he's in deeper **** because he's been living with his parents and his son at their home in Chicago (Cheli's kid plays for the Chicago Steel). Nothing like having to explain to mom and dad why you need a ride home at 5am from the Westmont PD. Even when you're almost 48.

A few people said to wait till the trial; Westmont is notorious for being hardasses and likely hauled his *** into the drunk tank because he was speeding at 4am with a BAC between 0 and .08.

Was it wrong? I'm reserving judgment till after the trial. But I certainly do agree with Sarah Spain that because no one was harmed, his actions (being stupid) are openly mock-able.

Mike Ribeiro had to get a tracheotomy after receiving a high stick in the throat against the Rangers last night.

I know that's an awful injury but I'm finding it very difficult to feel bad for him.

He got that stick in the throat because he was trying to put a dirty hit on Higgins.

Bruins just got a PP goal off of an awful Mark Recchi dive. No place in the game for that Mr. Veteran.

On another note, Marc Savard went down with a knee injury (?) 28 seconds in.

God I hate Johan Hedberg. Against everyone else he blows but against the Rangers he's he's the second coming of Terry Sawchuk.

This is a strange story about Michael Ryder's brother...

The younger brother of Boston Bruins' forward Michael Ryder has been charged with armed robbery in Bonavista, Newfoundland.

The RCMP reported on Wednesday that Daniel Ryder has turned himself in to police. The St. John's Telegram is reporting that Ryder will remain in custody pending a psychiatric fitness assessment before he appears in provincial court on Jan. 14.

On Tuesday, a suspect allegedly committed armed robbery at a convenience store in Bonavista. Police say a man entered the store with his face partially obscured by a scarf, and told the cashier that he had a gun.

Police say that Ryder is facing charges of using a disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, and theft under $5,000.

Daniel Ryder, who turns 23 on Jan. 12, was a third round pick of the Calgary Flames in the 2005 draft. The Flames issued the following statement regarding Ryder's situation.

"It is disappointing when you hear any troubling news regarding former players. Hockey aside, of foremost importance is their welfare and well being. We hope that Daniel is able to overcome his challenges and make a positive contribution in his community."

Ryder was a star in junior hockey for the OHL's Peterborough Petes and Plymouth Whalers from 2003-07, where he compiled 127 goals and 308 points as a centre. In 2005-06, he led the Petes in playoff scoring as the team made an appearance in the Memorial Cup, and was awarded the Wayne Gretzky Award as playoff MVP.

Once drafted by Calgary, he signed a three-year entry level contract and was assigned to the Quad Cities Flames of the AHL. But just six games into his pro career, he abruptly quit the team and was suspended by Calgary. He eventually returned to the team for the 2008-09 campaign, and played 19 games before he was sent to Las Vegas of the ECHL. He finished last season on loan to the Providence Bruins of the AHL, and has not played since.

He's been pretty good most of the year but yeah, he really gets up for games with the Rangers.

Karma bit them in the ***. Just an atrocious effort after the Satan goal.

Good news for the Red Wings: Zetterberg and Cleary return to play tonight.

Bad news for the Red Wings: Thomas Holmstrom breaks his foot in practice while working on deflections, something he's done 100 of in each practice for years upon years now. Today he hit one wrong and put it off the soft part of the skate. He'll be out 3-4 weeks.
