51 saves. Unreal. I can't recall a Wings goaltender having a game like that in a long, long time.

Jiiiiiiiimmmmaaaayyyy!!!!! :D

How he went from the kid with a nervous tick after you score two quick goals on him in the AHL to Vezina and Calder candidate...

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Karma bit them in the ***. Just an atrocious effort after the Satan goal.
Eh, they were completely overmatched with all the injuries, regardless of the effort. I'm not sure they would have won the game even with Savard, Bergeron, Ference, and a normal Lucic (who I thought looked terrible), but they didn't have a prayer without them.

Hey, were you here with them? Are you staying for the game tonight???

Unfortunately not. Wasn't assigned the trip, and responsibilities here made it impossible to take Thurs/Fri off to go. The whole family was there though, and rooting for the right team. I'll actually be watching tonight's game at (sigh) a BC alumni event with my roommate, who is one of the heads of the BC alumni association here in town.

The effort lately has just been terrible. Unfortunately the team we have seen thus far is the team we are going to get from here on out. Doesn't help with the injuries but its no excuse. They don't play with any passion.

Julien wearing out his welcome as he (reportedly) did in his previous stops?

Woah, woah, woah. I'll give you Calder candidate, but he's not a Vezina candidate just yet; not in my book anyway.

Rick DiPietro starts in goal tonight for the Islanders against the Dallas Stars.

Shocking, I know.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Doubtful. While it can be done, goalies don't score too often.

Gee -- we are saying the same thing about the Leafs and Wilson

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

A KHL game was called off today about four minutes into it. Not because the lights went out, like what happened in New Jersey last night, but because... They ran out of players.

Avangard Omsk and Vityaz started brawling before the game started and then business picked up once the puck was dropped. Three different line brawls erupted and sure enough the game was called off - it was so out of hand that even Jaromir Jagr was prominently involved (and looking like Scott Hall). There are three videos contained in that link - give it a look.

Maybe not Vezina (I agree with you on that) but...

How's Osgood taking this? Outplayed by a rookie this year, by a career backup last year...

Looks like the Osgood from yesteryear is gone.

MAYBE.... Well, I think Detroit should do what everyone else (including most of you) would consider stupid:

Trade Osgood. For a goaltender? Nah. Trade him for prospects and/or perhaps a draft pick. Then bring up a goaltender and ride Howard.

I don't think this team is a Cup contender anyways this year. Too many injuries and setbacks. Let's dump salary a bit and get some youth. Bring up Daniel Larsson to be the backup. Or let those awesome European scouts the Red Wings employ search the Swedish Elite League or Finnish equivalent for a free agent goaltender that can come in (might be problematic that way but... hey. It worked for the Wild).

Yeah, losing Osgood if we have the playoffs would be bad, but the guy can't even bring himself to perform against regular season opponents. There's no such thing (regardless of subjective opinion) as a sucky playoff team. If he can't get it going during the regular season, I just can't see him pulling it off this year either.

Too bad though. Osgood is a good goaltender who will more than likely make it to the Hall of Fame. It's just that his days as a dominant #1 goaltender, at least with the Wings, as far as I'm concerned, are over.

But I'm not the GM.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

It's difficult to say exactly what's up with Ozzie. To be fair to him, Howard has been the hot hand lately and Babcock likes to ride those streaks (rightfully so). When he does get a start, he's prone to giving up softies, perhaps because he hasn't gotten a lot of playing time in the last two months and needs a period or two to get it back together. So what do you do? *shrugs*

I agree that even if the Wings make the playoffs, they are not a Cup contender this year, barring some quick line chemistry in March and a surprise run. As for trading Ozzie, I don't know. I think that with the talent in our minor league system we're about due for a youth movement in goal (as Howard is proving), but there are plenty of teams who could also use him as insurance and as a veteran presence to mentor their younger goalies. It's a tough call.

Also, Ken Holland has 4 Stanley Cup rings as a GM, and has had a look at 2 more since he's been the organization. The man knows what he's doing, and has his reasons for such moves.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!

Speaking as a semi-outsider, I don't think you can rate Detroit as a cup contender or not based on the regular season, with the # of injuries. As a Sharks fan, I want nothing to do with a healthy Detroit team in the #7 slot come April. They'd immediately be one of 3, maybe 4 teams in the West with a legit shot of coming out. Anaheim was what, 5 minutes and a goal from the conference finals last year in a similar situation.
