#2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

Re: #2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

Good game Friday night, and much closer than the 4-1 score might suggest. Moses again used his speed well, and could have scored a couple of additional goals on point blank opportunities, roofing one and going wide on the other. A lot of comments above, such as UNH needs to score 4 goals to win and Merrimack needs to stay out of the box, proved to be true. Not counting the final Merrimack penality with seconds remaining, UNH only had three PP opportunities, with Moses scoring a few seconds after the first one ended, then UNH giving up a SHG on the second in the first period. After that, I think that both teams tightened things up, although both goalies made several great saves to keep the score close until the waning minutes of the third.

The closing seconds of the BC-NU game were intersting, to say the least.

I think that Merrimack will give BC a really good game for the HE title on Saturday night; BC may need the extra three hours rest to win this one.

Re: #2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

hell of a game... was a real nail biter up until the end. I tought both goaltenders played fantastic, canatta especially making huge save after huge save. I wish Da Costa had scored on the play at the end of the first because that move was just FILTHY! was sportscenter top 10 material if he had scored there. Hell of a game, moses scares the hell out of me every time hes on the ice i think hes gunna make something happen. No team seems to have an answer for the madsen sheen flannigan line all year and especially these past 2 weekes they have been flat out dominant in the forecheck and cycle.

Re: #2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

Great job, Warriors, and best of luck tonight! Really cool to see that whole corner packed with your fans, and obviouslythe non-UNH fans in the building added to the support. Hoping to see you guys get your first trophy tonight!

Question about the game. When Kessel scored that 'goal' when DeSimone was clearly offsides. Has anyone ever seen a review for an offsides before? I've never heard of that as a reviewable play, and would think it opens up a can of worms (what happens if a team is offsides entering the zone, cycles for 15 seconds and scores?)? I haven't read any discussion on the game, or seen the replay, but was curious if there was any talk about that? I am fine with it since they got it right (which I think is most important, and doesn't always happen), but it seemed like an odd thing to review...

Hope to see you guys next weekend in Manchester after UNH slipps to a 4 seed :p

I was thinking the same thing. Although, I thought it was suppose to be an automatic whistle when the puck is put on net while a player is still in the zone. Maybe that was the reason?

Yes, we were discussing the same thing at the game. I understand the need to make sure that all goals are legit, but as I said last night (and you say above,) how far back do you review the action?

The goal would certainly have helped, but in the end, I think MC did a great job in making UNH play the way the Warriors wanted them to play. Disappointing for us, but hey, good for MC.

I'm not sure the puck was put on net. It certainly wasn't a shot... more like a flip into the air that took a few funny bounces. The linesman made the call on the ice and I'm guessing the refs just wanted to confirm the offsides through review.

Was the offsides whistle blown? We never heard it, but we were at the other end of the arena.

What I was gonna say. Moses is scary fast, and that Da Costa dangle was, well FILTHY! MC fan support was outstanding (pregame at Legends was well done!). Back to the Gahden tonight!

Re: #2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

JC looked very solid saturday night vs ME. SD had a nother week to rest and is back close to 100% and getting better every week/day. The time off allowed other players to step up, gain confidence and expose the depth that many didnt feel MC had. MC is playing with a sense of confidence and passion that you don't see in UNH, who had 1st place locked up and won 2 out of their last 8 and handed it to BC. You can't just turn it off and on.
MD has the entire team on same page and their slogan, 2000 students, 28 players, 1 goal seems dead on. Have not seen another team in league getting every player to buy into their role better this year. Similar to Maine in early and mid 90's.

MC 4 UNH 2.

MC just needs to stay out of box, keep it simple and out of the middle in zone. D needs to play inside the dots and make the simple passes. That was the only area a hair off last weekend. Stollery and Ross made a few in zone turnovers that they hardly ever make. Two very accountable players who have been there a while and were rightly so nervous. Will be solid+ Friday. The least of MC's worries. Bigos needs to relax, stop pretending to be an enforcer(no such thing in HE, as Petrecki from BC) and play. No need to run around slashing and trying to intimidate anyone. They know there is no figting and caould care less, it accomplishes zero.

MC 4 UNH 2

BC/MC final

I apologize for being off by a goal. I did not anticipate that goal being calle back

No, because there was no reason to blow it, if cannata makes the save play goes on (it was dumped in from the red-line as desimone was clearing the zone). Just saw the play on dvr, his arm was up and he put it down as desimone cleared the zone. The one ref signaled goal and the light went on, but it was the right result, just never seen that before.

You know I was thinking the same thing, at first I thought it was a prank, but not for the rest of the goals. Never seen that before in 20+ years.

Let's call a spade a spade, the MC band isn't at the level of the competition.. yet. I guess a downside of the small enrollment. We can build on this!

Th best comment by Craig Janney during the game. "That second period was a snoozer".

Then don't bring them to the Garden. If they're at the game, and playing other stoppages, they should play for the goals.

Seriously, especially after NU/BC. It was nice having the option to check on 3 other games. ND/CC was very exciting and periodic "Can Dartmouth come back?" and "Is this really happening to Michigan?" switches broke the snooze-fest

Did Janney have a cold? He sounded stuffy and it seemed like being under the weather muted him a bit with fewer ridiculous/more insightful comments.

I was thinking the same thing, "shot on net, immediate whistle and intentional offisides"
but the NCAA rulebook does not say that.. it says that there is a delayed whistle, and if the puck enters the net during the delayed offside OR immediately after, faceoff outside the zone"
so it appears the associate refs/linesmen did it right.

The player was out of the zone when it got to the net and his arm was down by then, and I think the rule changed sometime in the last decade regarding the shot on net/delayed offsides. I think it used to be blown dead when it reached the goaltender?
