#2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

Re: #2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

Yeah, except it doesn't start until 6pm, and most of us are planning to get our moneys worth and attend both games.

I agree, and plan to attend both games. Will be upstairs at BBW from about 3 to 4:15 pm, then it is off to the Garden.

So enough talk about ticket locations and pre-game libations. What are people thinking about the actual game? It's the SMT's against Hockey East's Sons of Anarchy. Let's hear your breakdowns, and predictions.

Goaltending is pretty even (don't feel that Digi has gotten the credit he should get) . MC's defense is big and physical with a bit of offense (Stollery) mixed in, while Kessel, Kostolansky and Campanale (+19)have shined for the 'Cats. Thompson and his linemates have been outstanding, yet I think MC has a bit more depth and scoring balance (especially with the way the Sheen-Madsen-Flanigan line has been playing).

MC 4-3. Da Costa, Barton and Cucci were a bit quite in the ME series. I think they kick it up a notch on Friday.

Actually posted on the other thread that if UNH scores 4, they win. Big difference to me is the penalty minutes. UNH was the lowest in the league, both in overall games and league games, while Merrimack was first in both. Add in that DiGirolamo's stats are slightly better than Cannata's and I see very close UNH victory. Refereeing will be big in this game as well.

..........

I also can't see Mack taking 3 straight.

Re penalty minutes, hence the "Skating Mother Teresas" and biker gang references to the respective teams. If Hansen and Shea call it tight, big advantage to UNH. If they allow a bit more physical play, that works in MC's favor. And I wouldn't disagree that if 'Cats score 4, they likely win.

Re: #2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

Clarify 3 against unh

I'm not sure why there should be some particular special block against either team winning this game just because the previous two games went Merrimack's way. They won at UNH in a close game, and then won at home in overtime with their best player sidelined. Even the one loss at Whittemore earlier in the season was close.

Merrimack is playing well right now and I think that gives them a chance at winning; you're essentially saying it's LESS likely that Merrimack wins this game... BECAUSE they won the previous two? That's a unique perspective :)

As for scoring... yes, I'd tend to agree, if Merrimack cannot keep UNH to less than four goals, winning would be extremely difficult, as UNH's defense is very good and their goaltending is quite a bit better than Maine's. I didn't think the Maine series would be as high-scoring as it ended up being, but that kind of display against UNH I think is not to be expected at all, and the previous three games bear that out.

First goal for UNH is a key. They can come back but against MC style it is tough. Get the first goal and the game changes. UNH spent too much time this year playing from behind, I am glad they know they can but it would be nice if they could play from outfront.

FYP ;)

I've said it already that I'm worried about this matchup. I'd rather be playing BU. I think UNH can win this game, but they are going to have to push themselves. They managed to do that at the end of Saturday's game, so maybe there's hope?

Re: #2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

JC looked very solid saturday night vs ME. SD had a nother week to rest and is back close to 100% and getting better every week/day. The time off allowed other players to step up, gain confidence and expose the depth that many didnt feel MC had. MC is playing with a sense of confidence and passion that you don't see in UNH, who had 1st place locked up and won 2 out of their last 8 and handed it to BC. You can't just turn it off and on.
MD has the entire team on same page and their slogan, 2000 students, 28 players, 1 goal seems dead on. Have not seen another team in league getting every player to buy into their role better this year. Similar to Maine in early and mid 90's.

MC 4 UNH 2.

MC just needs to stay out of box, keep it simple and out of the middle in zone. D needs to play inside the dots and make the simple passes. That was the only area a hair off last weekend. Stollery and Ross made a few in zone turnovers that they hardly ever make. Two very accountable players who have been there a while and were rightly so nervous. Will be solid+ Friday. The least of MC's worries. Bigos needs to relax, stop pretending to be an enforcer(no such thing in HE, as Petrecki from BC) and play. No need to run around slashing and trying to intimidate anyone. They know there is no figting and caould care less, it accomplishes zero.

MC 4 UNH 2

BC/MC final

Probably the most well thought out posting you've ever had :)

Agree that this one will be tight. Not a surprise that goaltending will be the deciding factor in this one. I see UNH overcoming a Robby Barker cross-checking penalty late in regulation, with Mike Ayers making a facemask save in the 2nd OT, springing an odd man rush the other way, where Tyson Teplitsky banks the game winning goal off a MC defenseman's skate, sending the 'Cats to the HE final...against NU, who win a 12-11 regulation game against BC.

Re: #2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

Does anyone know of a site where I can pick up the NESN coverage on the internet. I can't get the direct feed on my cable service. thanks

From all I've read and heard, there is nowhere on the internet that is carrying it...although last year, there was a website (which I wish I could remember the name...something like justintv or something like that) that "less than legally" aired a bunch of different NCAA games that I couldn't watch at my home through my cable LOL...good luck.

This might help point you in the right direction: http://allsiteslike.com/adthe-net/

There are probably sites out there, but they might be slightly less than legal.

Wait...you can't remember a website with the same name as you? Drinking already? :p

Hey, thanks Chickod. So do we. Good luck to BU next year.

Thanks...I think my optimism will return by October! :)

Remember the old "Blue Ice" signs? (goes back a few years now, I guess)
