#2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

Re: #2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

When UNH and its fan base consider themselves "classy," there will be no fish throwing. In my eyes, the fish throwing event is for fans who know nothing about hockey and sportsmanship. It symbolizes, "Fish the puck out of the net." It is taunting and demeaning to the opposition. The UNH hockey program, as a national power, does not need and should not insult the opposition by this low class demonstration. Throwing the fish should not be an issue; winning the game should.

Harumph, I say. Harumph.

But seriously, Bill, have you been listening to the cheers fans throughout college hockey have been shouting over the past several years? Taunting, demeaning and insulting is just the half of it. Just consider the ubiquitous "Sieve!" cheer, not to mention what follows. That's hundreds and thousands of fans in unison, not the act of a single "catch and release" kind of fisherman.

Surely you would paint all fans who recite these sometimes humorous, more often bordering on offensive cheers with the same brush and call them "low class" and equally unknowing of hockey and sportsmanship?

Re: #2 UNH v. #3 Merrimack, Hockey East Semi-Final @ the TD Garden

Here's the info I have on the canned music: from what I understand, that wasn't MC's band. They hired or otherwise borrowed a band from some other school. Because of that, they requested that song be played over the PA for goals. That request should have been denied, but wasn't. UNH people complained about it, but the people running the game didn't seem to care. The compromise offered (eventually) was to play our goal song over the PA, too. I gave the okay for that to happen (instead of the band), but it wasn't an issue again... if you know what I mean. (Sigh.)

Based on headset conversations, it seemed to be Garden staff running everything, so they didn't really care about the HEA rules and aren't used to dealing with bands.

So, that's what happened.

Thanks for the inside info. FWIW, I'd love to hear more pep band and less canned music at the Whitt in the future (at least during stoppages in play, and of course when the band is available and has no other commitments.) Is that within the realm of possibility?

Count me in on this too.

At least the band has a chance of getting the crowd involved. Since "Black Betty" was "banned" there is no canned music that works.

Not a UNH fan, but I love the Whitt. I used to really love it. The atmosphere isn't quite the same as it was in the late 90s and early 00s. However, the throwing of the fish is one of the things that make college athletics so special. It's called tradition. It's why college football Saturdays are one of the biggest deals in every part of the country but ours.

Except "Hey Ya" I'm a dork who likes to dance horribly

I think the band could come up with a "hey ya" arrangement. You would just need and instrument (trumpets maybe) to play the singing part.

How DARE you question the commissioner of class?!?

They had an arrangement at one point as they've played it in the past and it was pretty good.

Be thankful it's only one:

I also look forward to the banning of almost all organized chanting at the Whittemore Center as they are "taunting and demeaning to the opposition." No more sieve chant, no goal count, and definitely no beating, smashing, or breaking faces.

So there should be no UNH music and fish throwing next week in Manchester?

The NCAA allows UNH to throw a fish with no penalty in the regionals? No delay of game? Nice, great neutral sites they pick

Solution is quite simple. UNH plays, say, BU. After UNH scores, fans always throw that fish on the ice and then the PA announces to stop throwing stuff or it will result in a penalty. BU fans should bring a fish and if they score first, throw it. When UNH scores next, they will get a bench minor if one of their fans throws that fish. :)

Does it really bother you that much when UNH fans throw a fish on a NH ice surface? I hope you don't lose sleep over it son.

They should get a delay of game, this is neutral site game, pretend that the NCAA is actually fair and not just a money grubbing organization. After all its all about the Student athletes, right?

I'm pretty sure every team is allowed 1 (but I could be completely wrong). It would probably get tricky to figure who threw what, if say trash and soda bottles were thrown, but I'm pretty sure they could figure out who threw the flounder.

Perhaps no one in the past has ever asked? It's amazing how far please and thankyous can get you.
So, something along the lines of "Could we please try to keep the site neutral? Thank you."? We should try that next year. FWIW, I'm not "hot and bothered" about it, I just don't like it.

There will also be no more billb posts. Of course, then who will give us fashion reports? Speaking of, bill, we're still waiting on your breakdown of how the SHG was caused by Umile not lacing his shoes properly.

We played "Hey Ya" on Friday. :-)

To those of you who want more band, less canned, I'm with ya, but it's not up to me. At least we're at the point where we miss no more than one game per year (we're trying out a plan this fall to make that zero. Hopefully it'll work.).

It made the Hosers happy. :) But we could hardly hear you guys being directly across the rink :( (Who would have thought a decade ago that now it makes me a bit upset )
