Si certus es dubita
Lindsey Graham lost his mind this morning over the deal. Apparently defense spending is not growing at the rate he needs it to for him to feel good.
He wrapped SAIC's shareprice in the Ukrainian flag. It was quite moving.

I can't believe the number of people who are frothing at the mouth at how bad this deal is and how Biden gave up too much. Like, if the volcano demands a sacrifice you aren't going to put the entire village at risk by telling the volcano to pound sand unless you're really sure it won't erupt.
I liked the coin, I wanted the coin, but the coin was never going to happen. There were far too many what ifs and the possibility of it failing with six extremists on the court were extremely high. Which would have put the admin in the double plus ungood situation of having the world's economy already starting to collapse and McCarthy would have been able to ask for anything.
That Biden was able to get these absolutely modest cuts to the IRS, and unfortunately SNAP programs, is quite an accomplishment. I had assumed near 100% of the IRS expansion would have been clawed back. And the SNAP benefit cuts can be figured out another way. I strongly suspect the Biden admin has a nice back door around the cuts because republicans are just too stupid and don't have good lawyers to understand the CFR in its entirety.
When choosing between apocalypse and a bit of hard work, I think the choice is easy.

The GOP was playing chicken and Biden forced them to blink. Now as long as the Dems hold all the cards and McCarthy is left looking weak and at risk of a call of the question on his leadership.
And once again, Sleepy Joe, the guy who doesn't even know where he is, gets one over on the greatest, smartest political party that's ever existed.
Schrodinger's Biden. Too dumb to do basic tasks, evil mastermind genius on advanced tasks.
It's "President Reagan, Mastermind" in real life. And some of them actually believe it.
Of course. Rule #1 for a politician is getting re-elected, right? I’d assume rule #1 for the Speaker is stay the Speaker, whatever it takes. The good news is, Democrats will be able to easily point the finger at Republicans if this debt ceiling deal falls through, and America defaults. The bad news is, we’d all be ****ed, and come election time, people will forget what happened, and the media will blame both sides for the economy collapsing. I guess we’ll see how this turns out.
I dunno about that - see psych's post just before yours. I think the odds that an HFC member asks to recall McCarthy's spreakership over this deal are very high. If McCarthy's only interest were to maintain his captaincy, even if he had to scuttle the boat, well, it's only Republicans that he would have to fear. Democrats can't do a darn thing to him, so if remaining speaker was his only goal, he should have stayed full hardline to the right and not negotiated at all.One thing we should remember is that McCarthy likely has goals that aren't "our" goals here. Pod Save America reminds listeners regularly of the 2011 Debt Ceiling battle. Where advisors to President Obama were absolutely flummoxed by Speaker Boehner acting seemingly stupidly. But Obama reminded them that Boehner's goals were not "to ensure the US does not default". His goal - his only goal - was to stay Speaker one more day. Every morning, he'd wake up and his task was to go to bed the Speaker. So all his stupid moves and statements were just ensuring that. Ultimately it failed and he was ousted.
But that's what Mike McCarthy is doing now. It isn't the Tea Party nuts, it's the HFC nuts. But the battle is the same. How does Mike McCarthy stay Speaker for one more day?
Politically, the party in power loses, and I'd call the Democrats that as they have the Presidency and the Senate.
Politics and optics don't have to be logical.
