118th Congress - Neutered Dog Attempts to Legislate

I can't believe the number of people who are frothing at the mouth at how bad this deal is and how Biden gave up too much. Like, if the volcano demands a sacrifice you aren't going to put the entire village at risk by telling the volcano to pound sand unless you're really sure it won't erupt.

I liked the coin, I wanted the coin, but the coin was never going to happen. There were far too many what ifs and the possibility of it failing with six extremists on the court were extremely high. Which would have put the admin in the double plus ungood situation of having the world's economy already starting to collapse and McCarthy would have been able to ask for anything.

That Biden was able to get these absolutely modest cuts to the IRS, and unfortunately SNAP programs, is quite an accomplishment. I had assumed near 100% of the IRS expansion would have been clawed back. And the SNAP benefit cuts can be figured out another way. I strongly suspect the Biden admin has a nice back door around the cuts because republicans are just too stupid and don't have good lawyers to understand the CFR in its entirety.

When choosing between apocalypse and a bit of hard work, I think the choice is easy.

Agree with all of this. From what I can tell, there is nothing in the agreement that can’t be undone on the very first day of a Democratic Congress. Spending cuts turned into non-binding future spending targets? Sure, sign me up for those, wink-wink.

Agreed. The mark of a good negotiation is if both sides are whining. You aren't going to win everything you want so get what you can, get the deal done and fight for more later.

The GOP was playing chicken and Biden forced them to blink. Now as long as the Dems hold all the cards and McCarthy is left looking weak and at risk of a call of the question on his leadership.

You can tell that the House GOP was really hoping Comer found something on Biden in his committee. That could have forced Biden to bend over more. Instead they didn't and now he once again did the job exactly how he is supposed to. It's not flashy, it's not going to win him a ton of headlines, but when the votes are ranked its popular.

And the Dems should keep letting McCarthy talk...he looks worse each time and it ticks off the Freedumberz more.

Yes, this. The Democratic wing of the Democratic party is not irate about the deal. We know better. This is just media ginning up nonsense to get eyeballs.

Good governance is boring. Ignore the bomb throwers, they aren't real people, they are being paid by the entertainment networks who need fear and riots for ratings.

Yup. I am glad some of the Progressives are still fighting but there is no way they will blow up the deal. They know CNN wants them to make it seem that way so they go on, say their piece so the next step is out in the ether, then vote for this and make Qevin look stupid. Its a win/win.

The best was when Qevin was saying his people were happy but Hakeem Jeffries was upset because Biden caved. Jeffries went on TV and basically made him look the fool.

Even though the risk of default is huge, part of me hopes the Fredumberz blow it up. It would almost certainly kill Qevin by the end of the year and it would just be the perfect cherry on top going into next election cycle. The clown show that would ensue along with the Trump primary will make Biden look like Teddy Roosevelt.

And once again, Sleepy Joe, the guy who doesn't even know where he is, gets one over on the greatest, smartest political party that's ever existed.

The same Sleepy Joe who colluded with his crackhead son Hunter to launder money through Ukraine? Or whatever the Biden Crime Family is up to in Republicans' heads this week? ;-)

Liz Cheney states the obvious and tells everyone that the Republicans told her she had to lie about Trump to stay in their good graces.

It's amazing how lying has become the defacto standard for fund raising and accumulating power on the right. You'd think the population would eventually just get tired of it.

Chip Roy pulls his d1ck out on CNN and says “Mine is bigger than McCarthy’s.” We’ll see if Roy threatens McCarthy’s speakership over the debt ceiling deal.

One thing we should remember is that McCarthy likely has goals that aren't "our" goals here. Pod Save America reminds listeners regularly of the 2011 Debt Ceiling battle. Where advisors to President Obama were absolutely flummoxed by Speaker Boehner acting seemingly stupidly. But Obama reminded them that Boehner's goals were not "to ensure the US does not default". His goal - his only goal - was to stay Speaker one more day. Every morning, he'd wake up and his task was to go to bed the Speaker. So all his stupid moves and statements were just ensuring that. Ultimately it failed and he was ousted.

But that's what Mike McCarthy is doing now. It isn't the Tea Party nuts, it's the HFC nuts. But the battle is the same. How does Mike McCarthy stay Speaker for one more day?

Of course. Rule #1 for a politician is getting re-elected, right? I’d assume rule #1 for the Speaker is stay the Speaker, whatever it takes. The good news is, Democrats will be able to easily point the finger at Republicans if this debt ceiling deal falls through, and America defaults. The bad news is, we’d all be fucked, and come election time, people will forget what happened, and the media will blame both sides for the economy collapsing. I guess we’ll see how this turns out.

Politically, the party in power loses, and I'd call the Democrats that as they have the Presidency and the Senate.

Politics and optics don't have to be logical.

I dunno about that - see psych's post just before yours. I think the odds that an HFC member asks to recall McCarthy's spreakership over this deal are very high. If McCarthy's only interest were to maintain his captaincy, even if he had to scuttle the boat, well, it's only Republicans that he would have to fear. Democrats can't do a darn thing to him, so if remaining speaker was his only goal, he should have stayed full hardline to the right and not negotiated at all.

Maybe, maybe not. With a deal in place and Republicans suddenly backing out, assuming McCarthy gets scared of being ousted I think more people would blame Republicans- assuming they even care, because most are too stupid to realize how important this stuff is. I guess we’ll find out shortly.

If the GOP backs out now they will get the blame (not from their voters but they don't matter).

The handful of Republicans with firing synapses have a chance to waddle out of the lime pit they dug and leapt into. Their staff will be begging / bribing / threatening them to take it. Biden has shown he will let the GOP drive over the cliff. This isn't Obama; we're not going to save the morons from themselves.
