Travel 4: All Around the World Same Song

Another beautiful breezy evening in Stockholm. Truly my favorite city in the world at this point.

However, waiting at a crosswalk, a convertible just went by and it had confederate flag license plates

I often found many Europeans are ignorant of the racial connotations of the confederate flag, it's just cool a rebellion, anti-authority flag to them.

I’d agree

I was unaware of the (former?) hated of polish people?

Went to vasa museum today, literally one of the most famous museums in the world (and coolest, frankly) and while reading all the description placards for the ship, there is this gem:

“The polish enemy- despised and humiliated

A polish nobleman is trapped under the cat head. He has been forced to crawl under a bench and vasas crew would see him when they sat on the toilet, a double humiliation”

Google "The Deluge".

I remember, about 20-25 years ago as soccer really started getting global discussion online, seeing photos of various supporters groups in places like Germany, Spain and others with a confederate flag here and there. Inevitably Americans would comment essentially “WTF?!?” and there being bewildered European responses completely unaware of the racist connotations. Surprisingly, it was usually English people that could back up the argument, most English people at least had some knowledge about the confederate flag.

TIL I learned that when I fly back from Dublin I go through US Immigration at Dublin International Airport. By the time I get to the lounge for some food I am technically on American Soil! Suck on that TSA!

When I went to Macau last year, I flew into Hong Kong. Then, I walked to a specially designated area to pick up the shuttle bus to Macau. Took that to Macau where I went through customs. Ergo, I was never officially in Hong Kong. And vice versa.

(Though, during that time in Macau, I did take the ferry over to spend a day in Hong Kong. So, that day I obviously had to go through customs and get "stamped" as being in Hong Kong.)

Delta flight from slc-ams has emergency landing due to turbulence.

7 of 10 FAs transported to hospital, one broken leg, multiple others with broken ribs . Yikes

Flying delta in from cph tomorrow, yay

So Hawai'i- and by that I mean the big island of Hawai'i, as that's the only place we visited.

Amazing place. The variety of environments on such a tiny place is incredible. Spectacular mountains, beautiful beaches, lush plants (where they are at least). Even the tourist directed things like doing a lu'au is really fun. It's one of the handful of places where the number of different languages you hear from tourists covers the entire world.

Going to an active volcano is pretty cool, going up to the top of the tallest mountain in the world to see a sunset is stunning. Hanging out to spend some time star gazing- there are very few places in the US were you can see the night sky like that.

If you are going, the time change can be rough. So plan enough time to really be able to enjoy it.

From it's base to the top it's about 30k ft. You don't see more than half of it under water. Although, geologists expect that to change to it's active neighbor reasonably soon (in geology time, way beyond our lifetimes).

The base of where Everest is located is well above sea level.
Tallest from base: Mauna Kea
Tallest from sea level: Everest
Tallest from center of the Earth: Chimborazo
